Phone Booth - 2,500+ Theatres

A Man Apart - 2,400+ Theatres

My Predictions

What A Girl Wants - I think this film looks awful, but I also think it'll be the biggest opener this weekend. Amanda Bynes has a show on Nickelodeon and was in the hit family film Big Fat Liar, so kids know her. The trailers show a good mix of physical humor and childish one-liners which'll appeal to the young lads and lasses. Plus, the trailer played before Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which many kids saw. All things point to HIT. 19 million.

A Man Apart - I think this film will do fairly well. Vin Diesel will draw in male action fans, but the "R"-rating could keep some of his younger fans out. The trailer shows enough action to whet the appetites of any action fan too. It won't be a hit of xXx-size, but I would not be suprised if it opened with 12 million.

Phone Booth - I smell a bomb here. I don't think Colin Farrell, however talented, is that big of a draw yet. The Recruit had Al Pacino. Daredevil had Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, and the comic book-angle. Minority Report had Tom Cruise and Steven Speilberg. So he's never really opened a film himself that made considerable money. Plus, I may be wrong, but I think some American audiences may be turned off by the fact it takes place mostly in a phone booth. It may seem boring to them. I predict an opening of 7 million.

What do you schmoes think?

What A Girl Wants (13 Million) The movie looks awful to just about everyone but girls ages 10-14.... The only adults who'll be watching this will be adults with kids... That being said, kids movies usually do well so this should do okay...

A Man Apart (17 Million) Vin Diesel can usually pull in a big audience and this movie attracts both genders (Males for the action, females for Mr. Diesel) ages 13+... It should pull in some pretty decent numbers...

Phone Booth (9 Million) This one is really hard to predict... Colin Farell hasn't shown any big signs of "star power" yet... Sure he's been in some big blockbusters, but always as a supporting character... And the fourteen other movies he's in each month (it really seems like that to me...;)) haven't been big blockbusters....

WHAT A GIRL WANTS - 13.6 MILLION

The trailer wasn't bad, but the TV spots suck. However, the fact that the trailer was shown in front of Harry Potter & The Chamber Of Secrets, features the relatively well-known Amanda Bynes, and is a "light" PG rated family movie, means that it should be able to have a good opening and solid legs.

PHONE BOOTH - 13.1 MILLION

A MAN APART - 11.3 MILLION

These two are attracting the same audience, which will definitely hurt them both. But another thing that will hurt them is the fact that audiences aren't really interested in violent films right now. It's definitely a bad time to be releasing these, but whatever. The fact that both have stars with solid fan bases will help them out, but I still doubt they will do great. I mean, who actually wants to go see a movie about a sniper right now!? Some teens won't care, but a lot of adults will be watching their TV's and if they actually decide to go to the movies, probably won't want to go to the movies and see even more violence. Instead, they will choose something light. And the fact that some teenagers will want to see them isn't really going to help them out, since they are both "R" rated and some won't be able to get in. Regardless, both should manage to do fine, with the biggest "iffy" being A MAN APART. Who knows, it may not even make the 11.3 Million I predicted. I know I wouldn't be surprised if it opened with less.

DysFUNKtional Family - 4 MILLION

I think this looks stupid, but for some strange reason these stand-up concert comedy flicks tend to do decent at the Box Office. This one will probably make a little less than the others, but should still manage to do alright considering it will only be playing on around 800 screens.

It seems that way to me too. He's friggin' everywhere and in everything. I personally can't stand the prick. I've never liked him and I doubt I ever will.

Why call Colin Farrell, a man you've never met, a prick? It just doesn't make any sense and serves no purpose whatsoever.

Anyway...

What a Girl Wants - 16 mil.
A Man Apart - 11 mil.
Phone Booth - 9 mil.

Phone Booth: 15 million
A Man Appart: 9 million
What a girl wants: 10.5 million

this is a tough weekend to predict.

According to the IMDB, the movie is only opening in NY/LA.

Really!? That's weird... I had read that it was going into around 800 theaters, which would seem about right because The Original Kings Of Comedy and Runteldat all opened in around the same amount. Who knows... But the IMDB does have a habit of being wrong quite a bit, so it really wouldn't surprise me any if they happen to be wrong about this...

I just suddenly got the urge to rate these posters...

A MAN APART = A-

This movie has a surprisingly very cool poster!

WHAT A GIRL WANTS = B-

It's really not too bad of a poster considering what kind of movie it is. Amanda Bynes is all you need and they've got her front and center.

PHONE BOOTH = D

My god, this poster is really terrible... I can't imagine someone going to the movie theater and looking at this poster and saying "this looks really good, lets see it." If anything, it will turn away customers that don't know what it's about. I actually do want to see the movie (on video though), but this poster is really BAD.

Don't get too accurate Adam, the margin of error is getting way too large ;)

I'd say that A Man Apart will open with about $14 million.
What a Girl Wants will grab around $12 million.
Phone Booth should gross something like $9 million over the weekend.

Phone Booth really looks like the kind of film that would start slow-ish, but could have great legs.

I never said it made it a bad movie, I actually think the movie looks pretty good, despite my dislike for Collin Farrell. And I do have reasons for not liking him, I just didn't go into detail because I didn't want to start a whole argument with other schmoes about the guy in this thread. And that's fine if you think it has a cool poster, that's YOUR opinion, but I happen to think it sucks. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I really don't see What a Girl Wants doing so well. It looks absolutly horrible. Its The exact same movie as Lizzie Mcguire. I think it will have its normal Friday run, a high Saturday and a huge drop on sunday and from then on.

What A Girl Wants........11.3

Phone Booth "everyone" has been waiting for for a while. I can't wait, my buddies cant wait, my whole college cant wait. So I expect a decent opening, not big, but decent.

Phone Booth.............17.7

A Man Apart looks okay. It reminds me of Falling Down, but a big guy takes place of the wimp. Its Rated R, and it wont attract to many youngsters, I lost my crowd actually because the trailer just got bad. Not to great of an opening.

A Man Apart..........7.9

I will probably see Dreamcatcher again or The Hunted again. Im afraid to see the Huge Mistakes at the end of the hunted again, so I will probably stick with Dreamcatcher.

Can't wait for the box officials.

hmm, over at Lee's, they're doing a contest for Phone Booth, and the average for Box Office this weekend 'till now it's 20.4 million. I think that is TOO MUCH!! really, that is twice its budget. Lee predicted aroun 17 million, which is close to my prediction: 15 million. I really don't know, i have no idea how this movie will do. I know it will have very strong legs and great word of mouth though.

i still think that A Man Apart will do around 9 million more or less.

and i KNOW What a Girl Wants will bomb. i predict around 6 million for its openning weekend and i don't think it'll have legs or anything.

A MAN APART - 13 MILLION

It's a Vin Diesel flick, and I'm sure it'll draw in the crowds, but only the adult crowds, I beleve. The R-rating is going to keep lots of youngsters from seeing the film. However, despite the rating, I think the film is going to get some decent numbers.

PHONE BOOTH - 10 MILLION

The film has been advertised very well, but I don't think it's going to have great business. Colin Farrell still doesn't have that "star power" to pull the audiences, the man's still a beginner. Also, the film's premise doesn't strike me as a premise that will atract lots of movie-goers.

WHAT A GIRL WANTS - 15 MILLION

I think this is the film that will top the box-office this upcoming weekend. It looks very "family-friendly", and that's enough to convince me that it will do fairly well this weekend.

This is from Box Office Guru:

THIS WEEKEND With the stars and stripes on her shirt and a peace sign in the air, a teenage girl and her squeaky clean PG-rated antics will square off with three R-rated guy films aiming to school the boys on how to win the box office in three days. Warner Bros. goes extremely wide with What A Girl Wants, but moviegoers will also get to sample the competing action films Phone Booth and A Man Apart, as well as the standup comedy film Dysfunktional Family.

Enjoying the widest opening by far of any new release this weekend is the Warner Bros. teen flick What A Girl Wants which stars Amanda Bynes, Colin Firth, and Kelly Preston. The PG pic is aimed squarely at teenage and pre-teen girls and should flourish at the box office as that audience segment has been mostly ignored by Hollywood all year. The lucrative demo has routinely come out in full force as evidenced by the openings of The Princess Diaries ($22.9M), Bring It On ($17.4M), and Crossroads ($14.5M). And recent hoopla over the removal of Bynes' peace sign in some of the print and outdoor ads has given the film more attention allowing it to stand out in an already crowded marketplace.

The perfectly-titled What A Girl Wants finds the popular Nickelodeon-bred actress playing a teenage girl who independently travels to England to find her natural father. The fish-out-of-water formula is old, but will work magic with the target audience. The rating will allow parents to feel safe bringing young girls to the cinemas and last week's sneak previews should have spread positive word-of-mouth throughout classrooms across America by now. Warner Bros. has done well with its marketing of the film and looks to become the first studio this year to generate three top-spot debuts. What A Girl Wants bows in 2,964 theaters on Friday and could gross about $15M over the weekend.

After being delayed from last fall due to the real-life sniper killings, Fox's Phone Booth starring Colin Farrell and Forest Whitaker makes its way to the multiplexes. The R-rated crime thriller about a man caught in a New York City telephone booth who will be shot dead if he hangs up comes from director Joel Schumacher (The Client, Batman Forever). The upside to the film's delay is that Farrell has become much more visible due to the recent releases of The Recruit and Daredevil. However, violent action films have all struggled at the box office this spring as moviegoers have been flocking to fun and upbeat films instead. Phone Booth will also have to split some of its male vote with Vin Diesel's A Man Apart this weekend. Caught in 2,481 sites, Phone Booth may debut with around $9M this weekend.

Targeting young adult males looking for shoot-em-up action, A Man Apart stars Vin Diesel as a cop avenging his wife's murder. The R-rated New Line release was directed by music video-turned feature director F. Gary Gray (Friday, The Negotiator). Shot before XXX, A Man Apart has been collecting dust on the shelf for some time and is now trying to take advantage of its star's much larger fan base. The rating, however, will keep out the younger Diesel heads and the lame title is not winning votes among the testosterone crowd. The actor's Knockaround Guys, though an ensemble piece, flopped last fall opening to just $5M. This weekend, Phone Booth will provide direct competition for the same audience and the nation's recent shunning of dark and violent movies won't help any. A Man Apart enters roughly 2,400 theaters on Friday and could open with about $7M.

Eddie Griffin takes to the stage in the standup comedy concert film Dysfunktional Family which finds the comedian telling jokes on stage and off, about his colorful relatives. The R-rated release is getting a narrow national release in 601 theaters from Miramax so a huge opening weekend gross is not expected. Urban audiences will make up the bulk of the turnout and the comedian's numerous films like Double Take and Undercover Brother have made him a high profile comic. Martin Lawrence's comedy concert Runteldat from last summer opened to $7.4M from 752 theaters in August. Dysfunktional Family features a slightly lesser known star so a debut of around $5M could result.

Don't look for Chris Rock to get re-elected to a second term. His political comedy Head of State might drop 40% to $8M this weekend giving the DreamWorks release $24M in ten days. Bringing Down the House has had the best legs of any Hollywood pic this spring and a 30% slide to $8.5M would put the Buena Vista blockbuster at $111M.

John Travolta's military thriller Basic has performed well during the week and has even reached number one on Monday and Tuesday despite its fourth-place opening weekend. A moderate 35% fall to $7M could result giving the Sony suspenser a ten-day cume of $22M. The disaster pic The Core should drill deeper with a 45% drop to $6.5M for a $21M total.
