Anyway, some reporters questioned Frank about his dumb move after the game and he eventually got so aggravated he walked off.

yeah I saw that...and I was laughing my ass off afterwards when he said that if they wanted to see Vlad so bad maybe they should have gone to the games.

Well Roy Halladay pitched his 4th consectutive gomplete game shutout and hasn't allowed an earned run in 36 innings or something like that and with Loaiza blowing it in the 3rd inning this is looking like a cake walk for the AL Cy Young.
Now to the playoffs does it really matter who comes out of the Wild Card between the Red Sox and the Mariners, both teams have a history of blowing it at this time anyways the past several years.
And from what I'm seeing the Cubs keep looking more impressive unfortunatley they gotta beat either the Giants or the Braves in the playoffs, and first they have to make it which it looks like they could do considering their schedule vs the Astros schedule.

Oh well, the earlier game time in Baltimore didn't matter. Tied at 1 in the fifth, the Yankee game was just postponed due to torrential rain.

Damn you, Isabel!
Does it really matter who comes out of the Wild Card between the Red Sox and the Mariners?
It matters to me personally. Nevermind me being a Yankee fan; I've got friends from Portland who'd love as much as me another Y's/M's matchup in the postseason.
Screw the Red Sox. They've already got five World Series wins! Quit being so greedy. What about the Phillies? They've been around fifteen more years, but have...one championship.

from what I gather...the game stats will cound and they will make the game up either sept 26 or 27 in NY.
No idea if they play it from where it left off or if they do the whole thing over.
Plus, does it happen often where a game will be called in one place and made up at another?

1. Last I read is that this game will be made up only if it needs to determine home field advantage for the postseason. If Oakland is more than one game behind the Yankees record-wise, this game won't need to be made up. If it is replayed, then the whole game will be done over.
2. I wouldn't call a one-run win a beat-down, but a win's a win, right? Phillies are playing the Reds this weekend, and the Marlins are up against the Braves. Advantage? Duh.

First off, great news.
the MLB has no intentions of letting Vlad leave. If they were owned by a private owner then that would be a different story. but the MLB will pull the strings to make sure he stays.

Alright people are jumping on bandwagons. Since the Blue Jays are gone and Roy Halladay is winning the Cy Young. I'll jump on the Cubs bandwagon and hope they make it and end a I think 95 year drought.
Oh the Tigers are losing the rest of their games this year and breaking the Mets mark. God that's a horrible team.
I think MLB has no choice but to get Vladimir Guerrero back with Montreal or else who's buying the Expos nnoooooooooooooobody

My prediction for the World Series at the start of the year was Oakland vs. St. Louis. Now it doesn't look like that will happen, but the Cards have been playing really well lately and might still make it. If they make the playoffs I stand by my prediction, if not? I am going to take whoever else wins the Central, Cubs or Astros.

Tonight we got our ace J. Schmidt so there's another win for you! Wednesday...Alou will rest all his regulars, because its a day game...but we are 12-1 lifetime at Minute Maid park.

The death count will rise, since scores of old people staying alive for that day will finally keel over. Also, do some fans secretly never want their team to win? Masochists need their pain.

NL MVP - Pujols deserves it but Bonds will probably win again.
NL Cy Young - Gagne
AL MVP - Jorge Posada, what a season he's having and as a catcher. Been very consistant all year long.
AL Cy Young - Halladay, hands down
NL MVP - tough call, but slight edge to Bonds only because the team is total shite without him and Pujols has a better supporting cast, but damn near a tie. The Braves fan in me likes Sheffield, but too many guys on that team having monster years for him to really stand out (Lopez with excellent numbers and about 100 less at bats than the other guys is a strong contender too though)
ML Cy Young - Tough call between Russ Ortiz and Eric Gagne, but slight edge to Ortiz as he really stepped up when Maddox stumbled out of the gate.
I watch more Braves games so am always biased by players I see play more often.
I'd also have to throw in
AL Rookie Of The Year - Rocco Baldelli, this kid is going to be huge
NL Rookie Of The Year - Dontrelle Willis, with a ton of consideration to Scott Podsednik

NL Cy Young - Gagne
AL MVP - This is very tough because you have a lot of contenders. They are not giving it to A-Rod because Texas is horrible so I'm going to give it to Frank Thomas of the White Sox who had an amazing 2nd half of the season.
AL Cy Young - Halladay, This isn't even debateable
NL MVP - Bonds because the Giants are a playoff team and the Cardinals are not which is why Pujos
NL Cy Young - Eric Gagne because he's been amazing this year and it would be great for a reliever and a Canadian to win it.
Well the Astros got spanked and Kerry Wood was dominant for the Cubs last night. Reallistically that's the only thing left to decide because the Mariners are about to blow it again.
I hope I don't see the umpires that did the past two Blue Jays and Devil Rays games in the playoff or else we will have tossed pitchers.

And Sev, 1988 is your answer.
Actually it was 1998 (but that was probably just a typo on your part).
The Cubs beat the Giants in a one game playoff in 1998. I remember because it was one of the greatest days of my life.
We drove 130 miles up from college but we couldnt get tickets because they were too expensive, so we snuck into one of the bars (none of us were 21 yet) and watched the game along with hundreds of other drunk and crazy cubs fans. When Rod Beck got the 27th out, we all rushed out of the bars and into the streets. There we met the people rushing out of the park and for the next two hours, the partyers ruled Clark & Addison. Traffic was completely stoppped as we sang and danced and high fived EVERYONE!! People were climbing on top of buildings and cars and light poles. One guy even climbed to the top of the big red Cubs sign. It was truly awesome, a great great day.
And then somebody (not me) drove us 130 miles back to school that night, it is a miracle that we made it alive.
Of course the Cubs were then promptly eliminated by the Braves in three straight. :(

Man, not many Red Sox fans in here, huh? I just had to throw my two cents in. Sox'll take the AL wildcard and could take the AL period IF (big fucking if) their bullpen pulls together and gets hot at the right time. That line-up is too potent for any staff to stop. Currently, 80 guys with 80+ RBI and 6 guys with 20+ homers, three of the top 4 in the AL in slug %, etc, etc.

The BoSox linup is sick, just plain old sick. everyone is having a career year excepy Manny and Nomar, imagine that. the two biggest guys in that linup and they are having an "average" season. tho Manny could win the batting title.
For the Sox it's all about how far the starters can go. Pedro is back to being unhitable and Derek Low has had a supurb 2 months, looks much like his 20 game winner from last year, getting 17 ground outs a game.

Why does that not surprise me? Just wait until Dusty does something like this in the playoffs. The entire North Side will riot.
On a bit of interesting baseball related news, I started at my new job today (4 hour day 1-5) and its at a title company that processes titles for commercial and residential sales, along with lots of other stuff. Anyways, long story short, I was putting away/cleaning out files today and I came across a file under the name "Stienbrenner, G." Being a baseball fan, and nosey, I opened the file to see that it belonged to the George Stienbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees. I read through the file and found out that he recently bought a condo on a huge lake 12 miles south of me. He paid $350,000 cash for it. So, I can truthfully say that George Steinbrenner lives 12 miles from my house. The lake is quite the popular residential spot for multimillionaires. Just about every house on the lake is worth $1 million. 2 years ago, the last time I worked at the place im at now (my mom has worked there 15 years, she got me in, both times) I had the honor of driving a check to a local realtors office for the purchase of a house on that lake. The amount? $3 million dollars. Only the realtor knew who bought the house though. All we knew was that he was from Chicago and kept everything private. But that was quite the day for me, I was so nervous I almost pissed myself. Just think of what I'd go through if I was responsible for losing a check for $3 Millon dollars.
Anywho, Cubs will lose tonight since Estes is 'pitching' (I use that term loosely), and I live 12 miles from George Stienbrenner.

We've touched on MVP/Cy Young, but what do you baseball Schmoes think for manager of the year?
AL - Tony Pena, the amazing cacther who had no fear in picking off a runner at first from his knees becomes a manager who turns a 100-loss team into a contender through the final week of the season.
NL - My Braves bias says Bobby Cox because he lost Glavine, Millwood and most of the bullpen.....yet, year in and year out, Bobby gets his team to the playoffs but I really love the job Felipe Alou has done with the Giants.
Dusty Baker has done a wonderful job getting the Cubs where they are but I think that has more to do with the blossoming of Prior and Wood and them becoming arguably one of the best 1-2 starter combinations in baseball.
Minaya from the Expos also worked miracles with a shitty schedule and mucho sabotaging by the other owners.
Fuck, I also love the job Jack McKeon has done in taking the Marlins this far.
After all of that, I'd have to say Felipe Alou. After a pretty big revamp, he turned the Giants into an even more powerful team and this without viable protection for Bonds (I am SO damn sick of seeing him get this almost ridiculous amount of walks. I loved the fact that Oswalt challenged Bonds like he did today, basically saying "here's a 100 MPH fastball, hit it if you can")
...and yes, I watched a LOT of baseball today. :)

Go Sox! Fuckin' riiight! I had the game on at work last night, hoping for them to tie it up then, but, thanks to Burkett's masterful 1/3 of an inning, it was not to be. Hopefully, Lowe can tie it up tonight. Maybe Mueller can hit a homerun, giving him 20 for the year. The MLB record for most players on a team with 20+ homers is 7 and the Sox currently have 6. Man, that lineup has smashed all kinds of offensive records this year. Unfortunately, for the better part of the season, their bullpen has lapped nuts! Go Sox!

When the regular season is over I am going to list all of the offensive records the Red Sox have broken this season. It is a long list. And yes, too bad the bullpen was so horrible until they got Kim for Shea. It's no cakewalk now either but damn if they didnt blow 10 games, 5 of which were Pedro's. We would be talking CY Yound for Pedro had it not been the damn bullpen. They have blown 5 of his games, lets give them at least one blown save to be fair. That makes Pedro what, 18-4 right now with the lowest ERA and most strikeouts, and lets not forget about batting average against were I want to say he is 2nd or 3rd.
Oh well....:) Least we may get the batting champ.......again!

Check out the sweet ass watch I got today!!!! I got the Cubs one, duh. Its so awesome. Its got CUBS on the faceplate and then all around the numbers on the clock it says Chicago Cubs and then underneath it says CUBS across the back. Cost me a pretty penny, im almost to scared to wear it, it'll get damaged.

Although you better give it a good rub, the Reds just took the lead late in the game.

The last year they were in was 1999 and I think that may have been their 3rd consecutive year as the wildcard (may be wrong, though). They've actually been in as the wildcard quite a few times. Anyway, the last time they won the division (AL East) was 1990, but they were swept in 4 by the A's. They also won the division in 1988 with "Morgan Magic". Of course they haven't won it all since 1918.

Thanks, I was under the impression it had been much longer than that. I guess it's that whole 1918 thing that's really irking the BoSox faithful. :D
Well, I'm rooting for them to advance to the World Series from the AL, I hate the A's and I'm neutral to the Twins. If the Red Sox get eliminated, the Yankees are my second favorite team.
In order of preference...
1. Boston
2. New York
3. Minnesota
4. Oakland

Now that the AL matchups are decided and even thought I really despise the Yankees. I don't think the Twins will win this series but it won't be a cake walk either because anything can happen.
Yankees in 5
The As always start ot well in the playoffs and win the first two or two out of three and then flop at the end. The Red Sox look very good but I'd be concerned about their bullpin
Red Sox in 5

Cubs fans, can you smell it? I can smell it. Its something in the air. Know what it is? A divison championship, and its going to happen today. Cubs have a double header, and Houston is a 1/2 game back. Today is the day. Can you feel it?

Did I call it or what? Man this is a great baseball day for me. Houston loses, Cubs win the first game, if they win the second of the doubleheader, they win the division. Guess what, its 6-0 Cubs at the 7th inning stretch. The Chicago Cubs have done what many said would never happen, they got into the playoffs, and won thier division. YAY CUBBIES!!!!
Better look out Braves, we're on a roll and we've got your number.

Stranger things have happened. And, btw, this Cubs team actually has a lot in common with that early 90's Braves team that went on to dominate (well, at least in the reg. season) for a decade.

very true
I actully look forward to the series as I feel the same way. The Cubs need a couple extra bench bats and a solid first baseman and if the injury bug stays away, they should have a good team for years to come.

Loiaza had a great year tho too, and it sucks how people are riding his ass over Halladay's, even though Halladay had an incredible season, and an amazing September, wha tlike 5 complete games in september, including a 10 inning game.
Halladay for Cy Young
Delgado for MVP

I was just at Cubs.com and they have a poll up for who do you think is the Cubs MVP this year? The candidates are Alou, Sosa, Prior, Borowski, Wood and Zambrano. I voted for Prior, and he has 80% of the votes, while Alou, Borowski and Sosa have 5% and Wood and Zamby have 3%. Almost 100,000 people have voted for Prior. Where can I vote for Cy Young? Prior definitely gets it in my view.
Also, does anyone know where I can get a 2003 NL Central Champions wallpaper? Right now I just have the Wrigley Field Marquee that says 2003 NL Central Champs, thats featured on the main page at Cubs.com.

Today was amazing. Seeing #10, the greatest Cub third basman ever, Ron Santo, getting his number retired and being honored like he was, was truly great. The man was an amazing player, and is an even more amazing human being. I dont think there was a dry eye in the place. I know mine weren't. I know he will never ever see this, but congratulations Ronnie, you deserve it.

Well congrats to the Cubbies for winning the NL Central! It's well deserved and this will make for a great playoffs and a great playoff thread! We got Cub fans, Brave fans, Giants fans, Red-Sox fans and Yankees fans!! As for my Giants won 12-3 yesterday giving them 100 wins for the season!(7th time in Giants history) Unfortunately they aren't going to make up the game against the Mets today to have a chance at Home field through NL playoffs...but I'm betting the Cubs can take down the Braves for me! So beat those Tomahawk chopping bastards will you!
As for the NL Cy Young! I'm tired of hearing nothing but Gagne/Prior...Prior/Gagne?! What about Jason Schmidt?!?!
Here are the #'s for comparisons...BOLD means they lead the league.
GS IP W-L H R ER BB K ERA CG SO OBA
J. Schmidt 29 207.2 17-5 152 56 54 46 208 2.34 5 3 .200
M. Prior 30 211.1 18-6 183 67 57 50 245 2.43 3 1 .231
If you are going to say that M. Prior is a candidate, then J. Schmidt is clearly one as well...with slightly better #'s, plus he lossed his mother early on in the year and battled through injury mid-season. As for Gagne...nope, he had a great year but as far as I'm concerned Cy Young should go to starters only. He still blew the save in the All-Star game and knowing my luck will screw my Giants out of getting Home field advantage in the WS!
daddiefatsacks
09-29-2003, 08:14 PM
I'd choose Schmidt over Prior as well for the Cy young of the NL, but no other closer has ever dominated a season like Eric Gagne did
55 saves, only 1 earned run since the all star break, over 100 more strikeouts than hits...
id give it to Gagne

Gagne was just plain old SICK SICK SICK. Id say the greatest EVER non starter performance ever. No disrespect to Eckersley and his great season, but Eric put up some serious Pedro numbers, even better, and and a closer. THE BEST closer performance ever.
