I'm kind of surprised to see Basic in the number one slot but, other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.
hmm, i really though that The Core would go for the top, i guess Basic is having a great word of mouth.

Really shitty numbers in my opinion, hopefully the box-office will break out of its current slump in April, and I think it will.

I'm also surprised by this, especially considering that word of mouth isn't the best...
It's cool to see that THE CORE is pulling in some decent numbers during the week...

The word of mouth for Basic isn't too bad but I didn't expect it to be number one. Does anyone believe that it'll be number one or two for the rest of the week?

I doubt it... I wouldn't be surprised if it loses it on tuesday and probably won't be back the rest of the week, or ever. So it better just enjoy its one day at the top.

I'm happy for Phone Booth and A Man Apart (both which I am about to go see in 20 minutes...) I'm also happy that What A Girl Wants performed the worst out of the three new openers...
Here's what I predicted for PHONE BOOTH at Lee's Movie Info:
Friday - 4.3 Million
Saturday - 5.9 Million
Sunday - 2.9 Million
Total - 13.1 Million
Here's my predictions for A MAN APART:
Friday - 3.9 Million
Saturday - 4.5 Million
Sunday - 2.9 Million
Total - 11.3 Million
Here's my predictions for WHAT A GIRL WANTS:
Friday - 4.1 Million
Saturday - 5.6 Million
Sunday - 3.9 Million
Total - 13.6 Million
I think WHAT A GIRL WANTS should have some good legs, just like most family movies. It will probably end its B.O. run with 40-50 Million.
Hmm, WHAT A GIRL WANTS just might be able to beat out A MAN APART for the #2 spot this weekend. Then you can say that Vin Diesel got beat by a girl ;).

Is A Man Apart the film which already has a sequel in the works? I remember hearing that a Diesel film other than Pitch Black and XXX also had a sequel in the works.
Hmm, I don't know if PHONE BOOTH will be quite the huge sleeper hit that some of you are expecting. It doesn't seem everyone is loving it. Check out these Cinema Score ratings:

35 and Up - C+
Female

There's no doubt that PHONE BOOTH will be #1 for the weekend, but I think WHAT A GIRL WANTS will take the #2 spot for the weekend, leaving the "R" rated Vin Diesel flick A MAN APART in the #3 spot.
By the way, DYSFUNKTIONAL FAMILY really BOMBED. It only made 0.370 on Friday and looks to make around 1 Million for the weekend, which would give it a terrible $1,661 per-screen average.
ok good it worked. (sorry was having technical difficulties)
leaving the "R" rated Vin Diesel flick A MAN APART in the #3 spot.
I think that was a major mistake for the financial aspect of the film. Everyone knows that PG-13 almost always makes more money than an R. (though I'm glad that they decided not to change their film based solely on money)

It could because family films always make much more on Saturday and Sunday then on Friday.

yeah, that is so weird, A Man Apart got to my local theater and almost everyone is talking bad about it, plus it's one of the worst reviewed films of 2003 so far. Phone Booth doesn't get here till one more month!!! so i can't really tell except i haven't heard a single bad word from it in here, or friends who have seen it. weird, i can't really tell what kind of an audience is Phone Booth appealing to.

Of course that's why... Family movies usually always see big increases on saturday. WHAT A GIRL WANTS should be able to get enough of a boost to take out A MAN APART. WHAT A GIRL WANTS will probably be #2 for saturday, and for the weekend.

I totally agree. What a Girl Wants is a cliched rip-off of Princess Diaries with an annoying lead actress who isn't even very good looking. A Man Apart was kick ass. It really surprised me how good it actually ended up being.

I'm really happy for Phone Booth, perhaps the recent box-office boom for comedies is starting to lose some steam (but it'll pick up more steam once Anger Management is released).

You can't even say that for sure when you haven't even given WHAT A GIRL WANTS a chance. I think it looks much better than The Princess Diaries and I'm kind of sick of everyone calling it a rip-off. It's not a freakin' rip-off of The Princess Diaries, it's a remake of a film made WAY before The Princess Diaries was even written.
As for A MAN APART, well, I thought it looked "ok" from the trailers, but the TV spots SUCK. And then after watching Ebert & Roeper tonight, I don't even want to see it at all. They said is basically just pointless action scene after pointless action scene that are all mixed up and some scenes just come out of nowhere. It also sounds like it doesn't make some things very clear... The scenes they showed were just a lot of dumb looking action/chase scenes and I really don't care for movies like that, especially when they are pretty much just pointless scenes or excuses to get Vin Diesel to kick some ass. I doubt I'll even rent this one now.
I'd rather see WHAT A GIRL WANTS. And even though I'll still see a movie that I want to see even if the reviews are bad, I'm still glad that WHAT A GIRL WANTS got better reviews than A MAN APART.
This is from Box Office Prophets:
Friday Numbers Analysis
By Tim Briody
April 5, 2003
It's now April, and while there have been just about three $100 million films, the box office now more or less goes through the motions until the arrival of the summer movie season and X2. There's still some quality this month, and those films will be rewarded with big bucks. Three films with over $10 million on their first weekend is the right way to start.
Phone Booth
An estimated $5.2 million Friday is a decent enough start for the Colin Farrell pic. The Recruit, the first of the 172 films Farrell has appeared in so far this year, had a $5.4 million first day, and that movie had Al Pacino as the main draw. That release also coincided with the Columbia disaster, and likely hurt its final weekend multiplier. Phone Booth should see a promising 3.2 weekend multiplier for a weekend total of $16.6 million.
A Man Apart
Vin Diesel's A Man Apart atook in an estimated $4.1 million on Friday. Okay, I'll stop now. The number proves that Vin isn't an instant mega draw because of xXx, but at least this isn't another Knockaround Guys. The Vin Fan Club probably showed up for this one opening night, so a weekend total of $11.1 million should do it. Sorry.
What A Girl Wants
She wants a better opening number than the estimated $3.4 million it earned Friday, for starters. Actually, this isn't all bad, as it's quite likely to have the highest multiplier among the openers this weekend, as well as the best potential for decent legs. What A Girl Wants should pull in around $12 million for the weekend.
Dysfunktional Family
And the stand-up comedy concert film returns to its rightful place as a box office black hole. A $370,000 Friday estimate, even in only 602 theaters, is a massive flop any way you slice it. It'll finish with $1 million for the weekend if it's lucky, far removed from the top ten.
Notable Holdovers
It's not another Bringing Down The House, but Head of State falls a could've-been-worse 37.8% from last Friday, and looks to be down 35% for the weekend.
The news isn't as good for last week's two openers, but it's not terribly surprising, either. The Core drops 54.7% from last Friday and Basic plunges 57.5%. Both will remain down over 50% when the weekend totals come in. Good riddance.

A lot of movies are predictable and you can guess the whole movie by the trailer. A MAN APART looks really predictable from the trailer to. And WHAT A GIRL WANTS is obviously going to be predictable, it's not some movie that needs a bunch of twists. It's just a nice family comedy that everyone can enjoy. Just seeing the last 5 minutes isn't giving it enough of a chance, because you were dead set on hating it and 5 minutes isn't going to be enough for you to change your mind.

Sorry, but it IS pretty much a bomb. You have to consider how much the budget was and how much movies like that usually make. Disaster movies usually do much better and THE CORE had a big budget and won't even come close to making its money back at the Box Office. Just because a movie has made 20 Million by its second weekend doesn't mean it's not a bomb. If LORD OF THE RINGS had made 20 Million by its second weekend then would that be a bomb!? Hell yes it would... But if a movie like BOAT TRIP made it to 20 Million by its second weekend, it wouldn't be a bomb. You have to consider the movies budget and the type of movie it is. Hell, BOAT TRIP is actually a bigger success for its studio than THE CORE is. BOAT TRIP was really cheap to make and will easily make enough money to put it in the clear. So the studio releasing BOAT TRIP didn't lose any money, but the studio that released THE CORE lost a nice chunk.

Hell, BOAT SHIP is actually a bigger success for its studio than THE CORE is. BOAT SHIP was really cheap to make and will easily make enough money to put it in the clear. So the studio releasing BOAT SHIP didn't lose any money, but the studio that released THE CORE lost a nice chunk.
Heh, you said Boat Ship

OH MY GOD-----LOL!
I think the reason is probably because I watched GHOST SHIP last night and I kind of somehow mixed up the titles and came up with BOAT SHIP...

I enjoyed it... It was basically just a popcorn horror flick like Thirteen Ghosts was. It was entertaining, but it's nothing too memorable. A few scenes were pretty cool though.
