Easy one, schmoes.

What are the most gruesome sports injuries you've seen?

Joe Theisman, of course.

And a lesser known one. Freddie Mitchell, wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles. While a wide receiver for the UCLA Bruins, Freddie was running a go pattern down the sideline when for no apparent reason, his femur snapped mid-stride. His leg literally flapped at least twice around before he fell.

Truly gruesome.

Willis McGahee's injury in the Fiesta Bowl looked pretty nasty.

I love Dan Fout's reaction.

He said something like,
"You see here McGahee gets..........uhhhhhhhh!"

When Claude Lemieux cross-checked Kris Draper into the boards in the 96 playoffs, he basically broke Draper's face. It wasn't pretty.

Napoleon Mccallum, a raiders running back on Monday Night Football a few years back. The bottom half of his leg was parallel to the upper half.

Ed Mccaffery's injury the a couple seasons ago wasn't pretty either.

Easily when Psycho Sid jumped off the top rope during a WCW match and his leg just snapped in half below the knee. He layed on the mat writhing in pain and his leg just dangled there, all bent in the wrong direction. The injury happened like 2 or 3 years ago and he hasnt wrestled since, and I read on the net that because of it, he has officially retired from wrestling because of how badly he broke it. I saw a video of it when i downloaded it from Kazaa, it was gruesome.

Another would be what happened during what I think was a Cubs game last year. Someone hit a line drive back at the pitcher and with no time to duck or anything the dudes face just stopped the ball. It was one of those "holy shit" moments.

Hockey

This happened around the mid-eighties, early nineties.

Buffalo Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk had his throat slit by an opposing player's skate blade. The blood started squirting everywhere and he had to grip his jugular 'til help arrived. It was intense...he could've died.

Clint survived and went on to play a few more seasons...

Any schmoes remember this?

Toronto Maple Leaf's Bryan Berard getting his eye taken out with a hockey stick. That was about the worst thing I ever saw.

I've seen some nasty falls off the beam in gymnastics, but I can't recall the gals' names. Old age senility...you know how that goes, Grebby. ;) :D

Awhile back, someone emailed me an mpeg of a kick boxing match. One guy kicks out at the other guy, but the dude raised his leg to block the kick with his shin. The kicker's leg snaps on this guys shin. You can see it so clearly it looked like it was made of rubber. The real gruesome part is when he pulls his leg back down after the kick and tries to stand on it. It just folded underneath him. Really gross.

I remember watching Ed Mcafferey's broken leg a couple of seasons back. You could see it bend in an unnatural way, it was pretty gruesome. I think they only showed the replay once before they realized how bad it was.

I also remember that that game was played Sept 10, 2001. I remember thinking that Mcafferey's injury was big news to talk to my buddies the next day about. Though I dont think we ever got around to discussing it. :(

Was this the one against the University of Houston in 1998? I was at that game in Houston and I remember someone going down. It was ridiculous because nobody knew what had happened. All of a sudden the guy went down and the crowd was stunned.

I think it was. That was around the time, anyway. It was truly gruesome.

All those, but also...

I watch the Tour de France in cycling every year. And a few year's back, Laurent Jalabert had this terrible, terrible injury. He was one of the best sprinters in the world at the time, but after this injury he never went so hard on the sprint again. Can't really blame him.

See, it was the end of the race, final sprint. All the best sprinters are running as fast as they can to get an edge. Jalabert's coming on one side of the road. And then, this cop that's supposed to be insuring the runners's security, starts leaning on the street to take a fucking picture. The runners can't stop in time, obviously. Jalabert hits the cop, flies up -- freaky sight -- and crunches back down on the metal barriers along the road. Several other runners join him on the ground, some others pass right on him because they can't maneuver.

That day, Jalabert broke several bones, including his collarbone. His face was badly hurt and bruised, and stayed puffed up and red and distorted for several weeks. It really was one of the worst falls I've ever seen...the kind of fall that makes you afraid of going too fast when you're on a bike, no matter where, no matter when.

I was in a bad bike accident a couple of years ago. I was riding down the lake front in Chicago with the wind at my back, going very fast. All of a sudden an older woman going the opposite way, swerved into my lane. There wasnt anytime to avoid her. Our bikes collided front wheel to front wheel. I flew over the bike and the top of my head smashed right into the woman's cheekbone. Knocked her out cold. Both bikes were completely totaled (which sucks cuz I had just gotten mine 2 days before). She ended up being taken away in an ambulance. She had a bad concussion and a broken cheekbone (which I am sure was very painful). I felt real bad, even though it was definately her fault.

I ride a bit slower these days.
(well to be honest, I dont ride much at all, I try to avoid physical exertion at all costs)

I have seen many crashes in NASCAR races throughout the years, where some guys have flipped through the air 5 or 6 times before landing, ad still survived. So that's why it was surprising to hear the Dale Earnhardt had died from his crash at Daytona a couple years ago, because it didn't seem like that harsh of a crash at all. The bike crashes in the Tour De France have been pretty gruesome as well. The most awful injury I've seen in person, though, was when my sister fell face first off of her bicycle when she was in 3rd grade-- and broke her front teeth.

However, nothing beats the season-ending injury Bill Grammatica suffered a few years ago-- when celebrating a made field goal, he injured his foot!

seen a few soccer players take some nasty boot related injuries. and a player very few of you will have heard of jumped to head a ball, collided with someone else, and the mess of his head....yeuch.

kenny miller-another one where he was jumping for ball, got took out in mid air and did his collar bone in.that looked pretty painful.

oh, and the worst one was a male pole vaulter. he mistimed it, and he basically came down, legs open, onto the pole. i would imagine he was singing soprano for a month or two is all i will say. that looked painful as all hell.

I've injured myself like that, and literally get sick to my stomach when I see things like that. I had my left foot touch my forehead when I dislocated my knee and tore my ACL. Not fun times.

Oh man...sorry about the misunderstanding...yeah I feel ya pain, I'd never want that to happen to me..that's why I'm always careful with shit like "jumping from heights" and such..

Sorry again man..how da hell did you dislocate it? :(

Several injuries to both knees. The most recent was a motorcycle accident. 70 mph on the freeway and my back tire exploded. Went into the wall. While that was healing, I was holding basketball practice for my 10 year old step-son, and left the ground about an inch. But the ACL was already damaged, and I'd had two scope surgeries on the knee, so it was weak. Came down wrong, and ripped everything up and dislocated the knee. Not the kneecap, but a dislocation of the femur from the tib/fib. Had to have the boy pull it back into place so I could go to the hospital.

I felt bad for having to have Matt do that. Couldn't have been fun for a 10 year old. But I couldn't even crawl with it out.

I've seen gruesome things. Guys shot, legs snapped in half parachuting...and it all still gets to me, because I can literally relive the pain. I get sick to my stomach.

Thanks for the sympathy.;)

Thats why I try to stay away from physical exertion of any kind. The worst injury I have ever had while sitting on my couch was a foot cramp, and that went away pretty quickly. :p

As far as the motorcycle accident, I dont have too much sympathy for you there. Anyone who dares to ride those things at speeds like that is just asking for trouble. It sounds like you were lucky to get off as easily as you did. (end of lecture)

Indeed I was lucky. Not all luck, though. The CHP officer praised me for holding it up as long as I did. I could have died. And I'm not looking for sympathy.

Off to go ride my bike. Back on the horse so to speak.
