Do any of you schmoes have your local sports channel show WWE wrestling on a regular basis?

I'm losing my mind here...

Yes, it takes athletic ability and skill, so does that make it a sport?

The answer is a resounding NO!!

Why? Because it's rehearsed, that's why. It's NOT real. I think any serious sports channel (the one I refer to is TSN, here in Canada), that plays WWE wrestling loses a bit of credibility.

WWE wrestling is NOT A SPORT!

As far as those of you who will argue that they also show billiards, darts, bowling, fishing, etc., all I have to say to that is at least those don't have a script. The competition (game, sport or leisure) is at least REAL.

Do you consider Harlem Globetrotters basketball games "sports"? They are pretty much the same thing....

As for it being rehearsed, I'd say about 25% of it (or less, depending on the worker) is planned before the match itself....most of what they do in the ring is improv.

As part of the IWC, don't expect to come here and bash wrestling and not get a comment out of me....;)

If a winner has been decided before the game has begun, then it is not a sport. I don't care about improv, the winner has been decided.

The Globetrotters shouldn't be on those channels either.

That's why the WWE refers to itself as "sports entertainment".

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with what you're saying.....you actually seem educated compared to the usual hater that posts something to the effect of....

"restling is sooo sutpid!!!!1!! r U retrded or sumthin!!!11!1!"

sky sports which is our main sports channel in the uk is full of it,my 8 yr old lad loves it so i sort of put up with it,but it is excruciatingly bad, they just seam to be overblown clown's to me,doing stunts in the ring and loads of ham acting out of it,to be honest i find it hard to see how any adult can take it seriously at all,but after taking my boy to a show last year it is amazing how many are sucked into this charade.
but i agree it should not be on sports channels ,but as long as its kept to a couple of show's a week it would do no harm, at the moment though it is on nearly every night.

What would OzzyCash (http://us.imdb.com/CommentsAuthor?239058), who was discussed here in an old (http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20173&highlight=titanic) thread, say about all of this?

I found wrestling very entertaining...when I was about 13. Had a huge crush on Rowdy Roddy Piper. Those teenage hormones, I tell ya.

Anyhoo, what the wrestlers have to do to get in shape (they probably do tons of weightlifting and shite), that could be considered sport. But what they do in the ring is theater. So that part I personally wouldn't consider sport.

And to answer the question...I find myself lucky wrestling doesn't clutter up my local sports channel...yet.

I really respect what the wrestlers do. They endure a tremendous amount of punishment night in and night out with very little time off. The combine the skills of athletes, actors and stuntmen, which I am sure is no easy task.

That being said....
I dont watch wrestling because it bores me. I used to be into it, when I was younger and The Macho Man Randy Savage was still around, but nowadays I have little interest in it.

From what little I watch, it seems like the do not do much wrestling anymore. Long gone are the days when Ricky The Dragon Steamboat would get in the ring with The Macho Man and battle it out for 60 mintutes of epic wrestling. It seems like now all they do is just talk trash and then hit eachother with chairs.

I would definetly not be happy if wrestling started showing up on ESPN.

Figure skating is NOT A SPORT!

And just like pro-wrestling, the winner is often determined ahead of time.

If you had judges watching a wrestling match and giving scores based on their performance, it could be an olympic event. Drug tests might be a problem, though.

ALL wrestling talk should be directed to the TV forum, IMO.

It's not even a question. Of course it's not a sport.

All right, I'm not ashamed to admit it, I'm a wrestling fan.:D I grew up on the rock'n'wrestling MTV craze of the mid-eighties. Is wrestling a sport? No, just another tv show, they are great athletes though and I really respect what they do in the ring. Surely it's not the end of the world, and you can sacrifice a few hours of programming a week for all us wrasslin' fans.:) Seriously though it will always have a home on some tv network whether it be a sports channel or not. I'll leave you guys with this quote from a long time wrestler/manager.

"We (the wrestling community) never said it was real, you guys (the general public) said it was fake."

Well put.

Wrestling used to be on ESPN daily back in the 80s/90s :) WCCW and the AWA pretty much owned the network back then ... we'd have Legends of WCCW, GWF and IWF every afternoon and new showings of both on Saturdays and Sundays. Sports Channel and NESN each aired about 6 hours worth a week, NESNs airings had full Boston Garden Wrestling Cards aired in thier entirety. Philadelphia's Sports Channel and the MSG network ran pretty much the same as NESN but with Spectrum and MSG cards in place of the Boston Garden ones.

We had about 40-50 hours of miscellaneous wresting weekly back then trust me a couple of hours of WWE isn't that much ;) It's considered a sport like gynastics and cheerleading are continued a sport, that's about it...we old-time fans just consider wrestling a cross between a soap opera and the circus :D
