Yesterday i watched 2001 again and i realized once again that I don't understand the end of the film....
Can someone please try to explain???
- after dave sees the video, the monolith appears...why?
- the last scences....why is he in those rooms and why is he old.....??
- and what has this foetus to do.....?
I mean i can imagine what they might intend......but I just wanna be sure.....and read other opinions...
(bTW: i feel like a dumb lil'boy.........)

WEIRD! I am watching a document on that movie as I write this!!
I adored it, the shifting dimension sequence alone was worth the movie and let's not mention the soundtrack.

yes it's brilliant.......
the harmony betweeen the music and the pictures are perfect...
or just the special effects....they didn't have the computers in 1965 we have today ...
but there are just these few questions about the story....

the beings that sent the monolith used it as a wormhole to transport the guy into their lab where they could study him like an animal. in return, they gave him eternal life as a starchild. actually, im kidding.

In the end, he is slowly being transported into time, to see what will happen to him.
Then he sees himself die. And then we see The Star Child, the re-birth of Dave (can be any three of him, or all).
I'd say he was transported to become the Star Child.
That's part of the brilliance of this film. Kubrick wanted us to make up our own minds as to what the ending of 2001 means. The same for the final shot in The Shining.

Exactly, robk. There is no concrete ending to this movie. The genius of 2001, and by consequence, the genius of Kubrick, is the assumption that the audience is intelligent enough to interpret the film themselves, develop theories, debate, become involved. 2001 is one of those stunning filmgoing experiences that enraptures the audience with visuals, music, and an open, create-your-own-adventure plot. It amazes me each and every time I watch it.
