My vote goes for master P.T. Anderson.

I can't choose one over the other, I thought they were even in greatness.

Magnolia (10/10), my top film of 1999 and number 5 film of all-time over American Beauty (9/10) my fifth best of 1999 and a great film in it's own right, but not the kind of flat-out masterpiece Magnolia was.

Both were great films, but neither compare to Three Kings, the best film of 1999.

Magnolia (10/10) is my # 2 of all time. I absolutely LOVE the film. American Beauty is also great, and my number 2 of 1999, it just isn't as good as Magnolia.

Personally, I think both are disgustingly bloated films. I hate both.

A couple of years ago I probably would have said American Beauty, but over time (I know it hasnt even been that long), I find that my appreciation for American Beauty is slightly waning while my appreciation for Magnolia is growing. Magnolia is a little more complex and has more to offer. They are both great movies, but I think in the long run I would choose Magnolia over Beauty.

Really can't choose. I love both movies. But if we had to vote for directors, PTA would be my choice.

Definitely American Beauty (10/10), which is my third favourite film of all time.

Magnolia (8/10) I liked it, but quite overrated. Not as good as Boogie Nights (10/10).

American Beauty-10/10
Magnolia-9.5/10

*I think that both of these movies are great but in the end I have to go with American Beauty, what can I say it's a great movie!
It is a very poetic movie in my opinion!

American Beauty. 3rd favorite of all time, and easily the most entertaining of them. Magnolia is very good, but I can only see people dying of cancer and living depressing lives a certain amount of times before I can't take it anymore

Even though American Beauty(8.5/10) was very very good it cannot beat Magnolia (10/10) which blew me away so much so that it earned a place in my top ten of all time. Unbelieavable.

Both great movies but Magnolia imo is superior.

Magnolia-9.5/10
American Beauty-8.5/10 (It went down half a mark once i found out that the idea behind the beautifully shot scene involving the floating bag was stolen from an exhibition at the Tate museum in London, a museum that being an experimental film student i have to visit atleast twice a week!.For that Mendas you are not the legend i once thought you were)

Sorry, La Motta, but the idea for the floating plasticbag was all Alan Ball - he encountered the bag whilst eating lunch outside the World Trade Centre, when he was a playwright in New York. So adjust that mark - now!

Magnolia (8/10) is a very good movie, but at times too melodramatic and even cheesy. American Beauty (10/10) is near-perfect.

Magnolia 10/10
American Beauty 6/10

I have a strange history with American Beauty. All I knew about it was it was supposed to be Kevin Spacy's best performence at the time, and I liked all his other flicks. So I took my girlfriend of 3 weeks at the time and we saw it not knowing a thinkg about it. It was a tad strange sitting there while Kevin has the hots for an underage girl, meanwhile Im on a first date. Needless to say the movie struck us as rather odd. In future HBO viewings we were able to see it differently and we both enjoy it but when compared to Magnolia...well...seeing that its my all time fave flick, I have to vote for it. Im happy to say that the American Beauty fiasco didnt hurt things...3 years later we are engaged and learned to at least see 1 trailer before we see a movie! :)

My vote goes to AMERICAN BEAUTY (10/10 or A+) --- The best film of 1999 and one of the best films of all time! MAGNOLIA (8/10 or B+) was also really good though, it's just no AMERICAN BEAUTY.

Almost exactly what I was going to see. Magnolia featured some amusing set pieces, and some overall powerful scenes, but American Beauty was without a doubt the better film of the to. IMO.
