I dig Jack Nicholson. I kind of like Adam Sandler. The trailer is hilarious. Comedy has been bad lately. Bringing Down The House is awful, I hope this does not follow suit. I'll see this. I have HIGH hopes.

I like Sandler when he plays his cynical roles like in Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer. And Jack is...well. He's Jack. What's not to love?
This is the first time in a LONG time I've been excited about a comedy.

Here's a semi-positive review of Anger Management from Ain't It Cool News.......
ANGER MANAGEMENT (d. Peter Segal, w. David Dorfman)
As if it isn’t abundantly clear from the television ads that have been assaulting the airwaves over the last few weeks, allow me to assure/caution you that ANGER MANAGEMENT is an Adam Sandler comedy with all the imbecilic trimmings, riddled with juvenile non-sequitors, illogical plot twists, and slumming celebrity cameos. The big joke this time is that Team Sandler has turned one of these cameos into a co-lead, corralling Jack Nicholson to play in the mud with them. All you need is that shot from the teaser of a wild-eyed Jack nodding maniacally as Roger Daltry yowls out at the end of “Won’t Get Fooled Again” to know that it’s going to be a blast, right?
If this were the looser, zanier Sandler of Happy Gilmore, it might’ve been, but this is the cuddlier Adam as portrayed to profitable effect in Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds, and it appears as though he’s found a safe formula that suits him *and* his bottom line. The only deviation from those previous successes is that, for once, he’s working with a genuinely competent director (excepting, of course, his foray into P.T. Anderson-ville) in Peter Segal, making ANGER MANAGEMENT the most well-directed comedy of his oeuvre by relative default. The upside is a modestly enjoyable movie that isn’t marred by awkwardly cut together sequences or abrupt tonal shifts, with the downside being how this sudden professionalism has either straitjacketed Sandler, or simply exposed his universe as a bit of a bore.
This time out, Sandler plays Dave Buznik, a too-nice corporate lackey slaving away as a designer of weight concealing clothes for obese cats. He’s a spectacular pushover; inviting his boss to take credit for his work, while his office rival, Andrew (Allen Covert) is looking to move in on Dave’s girlfriend, Linda (Marisa Tomei). (Andrew’s an especially credible threat due to the illustrious girth of his male member.) But rather than snap under this unremitting string of indignities, Dave just takes it all in stride; that is, until his aggressively passive ways draw him into an improbable confrontation with a bossy flight attendant, resulting in an air rage charge that lands him in an anger management class taught by beloved self-help guru, Buddy Rydell (Nicholson).
Dave does his best to talk his way out of therapy – after all, he’s clearly not an angry man – but Buddy believes otherwise. He sees Dave as a powder keg of swallowed rage, and, therefore, an immediate danger to society; thus, landing Dave in his advanced, one-on-one program, requiring that Buddy move in and observe every aspect of Dave’s life. Cue “The Odd Couple” theme.
The domestic discomfort caused by Buddy’s infringement yields some disappointingly stale comedic bits (Buddy flinging his breakfast against the wall is all Oscar Madison), but their forays into the other aspects of Dave’s life are fitfully amusing. The funniest sequence finds Dave confronting an old childhood bully-turned-Buddhist-monk (John C. Reilly), which sours outrageously thanks to Buddy’s unconstructive prodding. Another bit has Buddy guiding Dave through the successful seduction of a smolderingly hot bar patron played by Heather Graham (who later ends up in a bra-and-panty set that will send Red Sox fans the world over into collective heat). But for every bit of progress Dave makes in Buddy’s course, his well-organized life, once in manageable shape, spins progressively out of control, threatening his job security and the love of his girlfriend to whom he plans to propose.
One of the film’s more appealing aspects is Rydell’s group therapy class, populated by the likes of John Turturro, Luis Guzman and Jonathan Loughran, all in full-on bizarro mode. Their material isn’t the best – in fact, it’s downright uninspired – but they make the most of it through sheer enthusiasm. (The stunt casting helps, too. Turturro picking a fight with a blind barfly wouldn’t be nearly as funny if the blind man weren’t Harry Dean Stanton.) Sure to be the favorite of all male viewers are Krista Allen and January Jones as a perpetually lip-locked pair of porn stars prone to assaulting unfortunate threesome invitees in a jealous fit of pique. Kudos to the casting director(s), in particular, for snagging Allen, who seems to be a men’s magazine superstar nowadays.
Amazingly, though, ANGER MANAGEMENT manages to stay afloat despite its notable lack of comedic invention. As with most of Sandler’s vehicles, this must be attributed to the actor’s unconventional, but undeniable, charm. There are people who will hate Sandler in everything; people for whom everything he does is the galling epitome of all that’s wrong with comedy, but I’m not one of them. I’ve liked the guy since his early “Remote Control” appearances, through to his scattershot comedy LP’s and subsequent movies. And that’s solely attributable to his charm. Even though his screen persona seems forever on the verge of violent outburst, there’s something inherently winning about Sandler-as-everyman. He’s us on our worst day; railing against the torrent of minor injustices randomly thrown in our way. And he’s also us at our most embarrassing; fumbling to find the right words when faced with adversity, and coming up with cosmically wrong answers.
But, loveable as he is, the current act is going to curdle fast, particularly if the material continues to be this limp. It’s could be a very short trip from THE BELLBOY to HARDLY WORKING. Let’s hope P.T. Anderson isn’t the only one to realize that Adam Sandler, and I’m fully prepared to be roasted for this, is one of our generation’s great clowns.

Anger Management looks like another stupid comedy starring Adam Sandler losing his temper and tackling people and beating guys up...only this time it looks like it makes fun of itself and those Adam Sandler comedies. JoBlo said it best "Funny Movie" cause that's exactly how i felt at the end of this movie. It wasn't great, nor was it boring/dull, but it was just a fun time watching a funny movie with some fun actors. I thought Jack did a good job playing his part. He had some good lines and Adam did a good job playing that Un-confindent loser that turns confident Un-angered man. :)
I suggest you go see it if you have some free time on your hands, but it would make a better Rental probably.

"Anger Management"- B+
Maybe I'm being too generous with that grade. It's not as laugh-out-loud as some of Adam Sandler's better comedies (and as predictably sentimental as his recent films, sans the terrific "Punch-Drunk Love"), and let's be honest, this is hardly Jack Nicholson's manic finest hour (that's "The Shining" or "Batman" or "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"). But it's too good- in premise and execution- to go into the wasteland of "B" or "B-" (or lower), though not hilarious enough to be rewarded with anything in the realm of an "A." But it's nonetheless a film I'll watch again, and add to the collection. For the inspired concept (of Sandler the normal-man and Nicholson the crazed therapist). For the fine teamwork between the two heavyweight stars. For the room-lighting appeal of Marisa Tomei's girlfriend. For the hilarious sex appeal of Heather Graham's cameo and the anger group lesbians. For the outrageous scene at a monestary with John C. Reilly's reformed bully (now a monk). For the comic tour de force of Nicholson leading Sandler on to singing "I Feel Pretty" as their car is holding up traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. And yes, for that sweet, sappy ending that's the latest to infect Sandler's anarchic approach to comedy. You know what, though? There are worse alternatives than watching two talents- one world-class (Nicholson) and one fully untapped (Sandler)- slum in popcorn-buried escapism whose only reason for existence is to get a smile and chuckle out of the audience.

I thought that it was just an okay film. It could have been so much better though with its great cast but it had too many tasteless jokes such as making fun of a major religion and its leader, a cliched portrayal of lesbians and shrinks, and the ending was corny beyond belief. The ending was so bad it almost made the film utterably terrible by ruining everything that had come before it.

Anger Management (2003)
The new comedy, "Anger Management", was quite a surprise, it was better than I expected it to be. So far, this is the best comedy of 2003. The movie has so many good things going for it, it has a funny premise, lots of quirky characters, lots of cameos, and lots of really good laughs. Not to mention the movie features Adam Sandler and the great Jack Nicholson teaming up for the very first time.
Sandler and Nicholson are a very odd pairing, but they work so well together in this movie. They share solid chemistry with each other, and both have their fair share of great laughs. Also, both are equally good in their roles, Sandler doesn't out-act Nicholson, and Nicholson doesn't out-act Sandler.
It should be mentioned that is quite a departure for Sandler, in the comedy department, that is. Sandler plays a very mature, relaxed, and different character here. He stays away from his over-the-top, hyper, and somewhat obnoxiousness self. I'm sure most Sandler fans will be disappointed by this, but I sure wasn't. Sandler can still be funny even if he plays a sub-dued individual.
The supporting players in "Anger Management" deserve a shout-out, from the adorable and underrated Marisa Tomei, to the always hilarious Luis Guzman, and to the versatile and funny John Turturro.
My only complaint with this movie, is that is slows down just a little bit towards the end, and it starts to focuse much more on the romance angle of the movie. Other than that, not really anything else I had a problem with.
"Anger Management" is not a great comedy, not in the slightest. However, the movie shows you a very good time, and it delivers lots of great laughs. I had a blast watching "Anger Management", and it's definitely something I wouldn't mind seeing again. If you're looking for the first good and genuinely entertaining comedy of 2003, "Anger Management" is exactly that.
Running Time: 1 hour 36 minutes

Anger Management is a fine comedy offering that provides a nice amount of laughs and some great chemistry between great actors.
Jack Nicholson steals the show as Dr. Buddy Rydell, a talented and famous anger therapist. Nicholson is electric here. A real departure from his role as Warren Schmidt in About Schmidt, which was quite somber. Nicholson is obviously having tons of fun here.
Adam Sandler is also quite good as David Buznik. Sandler is not as manic and/or "stupid" as he was in films like The Waterboy and Mr. Deeds. He plays an average guy here. It is nowhere near as great as his performance in Punch-Drunk Love, but still servicable.
The supporting cast is great from the lovely Marisa Tomei to the clever John Turturro. All of them bring a certain charm to the film. Amazing work on all fronts.
The film is laugh-out-loud funny! Sure, there are a lot of "gags", but that does not change the fact that each one is either quite funny or downright a hilarious riot.
Overall, this is not a great comedy by any means, but it is a fun one. It is leauges better than the shitfest called Bringing Down The House. If I am bored during Spring Break, I might just go see this Sandler/Nicholson starrer!

I can't believe how awful this movie is. About a half-hour in my friend and I looked at each other and wondered when it was going to get funny. And it never does. There are a few scattered chuckles, but that's it. No laugh-out-loud moments to speak of. I did like Sandler's character, and Marisa Tomei is adorable. But what a huge disappointment. A solid premise wasted. Most of it just isn't funny. Bad one-liners and a lot of beating people up. And someone needs to put an end to the way all Sandler movies get so unbearably sappy at the end. I spent 100 minutes waiting to laugh, ready to laugh. But the laughs didn't come.

Anger Management 7/10 Funny Movie
Just like JoBlo,that was the first thought that entered my mind as I walked out of the theatre:funny movie. Dave Busnick(Sandler) is a cool headed guy who gets stepped all the time by other people. When he is misdiagnosed, he must go through anger management therapy with the famous Buddy Rydell(Jack Nicholson). Eventually, after a few more misunderstandings with Sandler losing his temper, Rydell decides to move in with him to help him out. All this is to set up the jokes for Sandler and Nicholson to let loose. The movie succesfully maintains a constant stream of chuckles and a few belly laughs(the bar scene, the monk scene). What really helps this movie is the inspired pairing of Sandler and Nicholson. In lesser comedic hands, this would have been mediocre at best. They play excellently off each other and boost this movie up. The supporting characters(John Turturro,Luis Guzman,Maris Tomei) all add a certain something to the movie with their great minor roles. Especially Tomei, who is great as Sandler's girlfriend and trumps many of his former leading ladies. The movie has the usual sappy subplot, but with a welcome twist. Sandler's straight man to Nicholson's crazy guy routine is pure comedic gold which doesn't reach it's full potential here. I would love to see them team up agan, with some better material. But Anger Management delivers what we have come to expect from Sandler, but with the extra added bonus of Jack.

Anger Management delivered & fullfilled EVERY expectation 200%. Sandler is well gets caught up into a situation that pays off for him at the end of the movie. During the course of the movie Sandler has to endure the craziness of Nicholson. Is Jack Sandler's friend or foe? Sandler & Nicholson WERE NEVER DISAPOINTMENTS. Theres a FEW cameos and the one that I COULD NOT get over was Woody Harrelson in DRAG! eeeek !!!!! I enjoyed Anger Management from begining to end & hopefully I can coax my roomates in goin so I can see it again. 9/10

Anger Management was a step down in my opinion. I am a fan of Sandler (I think Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy are hilarious) and of course Nicholson is one of the best actors in business. The movie is obviously a Sandler vehicle with the requisite beating up of individuals, the cameos, and the "you can doit". That one liner is just about up in my book. The funniest part of the movie was the very beginning where fifth grade students compliment each other on there Dukes of Hazard and Chips T-shirts. The movie could have been something special but turned out to be a by-the-numbers comedy that barely gets a recommendation from me. I probably won’t ever watch it again.

Anger Management is a fun, stupid, silly comedy in the usual style of most Adam Sandler comedies, but this time it seems to work because of the specific subject of anger and the surprisingly funny performance by great Jack Nicholson. I have generally grown sick of Adam Sandler's formulaic and tired brand of angry humor...where he always plays some dumb witted guy(usually with a bad accent) who winds up in an unfamiliar situation and usually ends up yelling insults, beating people up and tackling guys with wreckless abandon, only to somehow save the day in some schmaltzy happy ending. This movie I actually enjoyed because it sort of makes fun of those Adam Sandler comedies by forcing him to join an anger management program or face jail time. Sandler plays Dave Buznik a sadsack who has a shitty job as an executive assistant and lets his boss walk all over him. he does have a sweet girlfriend in Linda played by Marisa Tomei but life doesn't go very well for Dave especially on plane, where all the guy wants is a headset but winds up getting zapped, thrown off the plane and arrested. He is sent to undergo anger managemnt therapy or face jail time. He is put in the care of anger specialist Dr. Buddy Rydell, played by the consistantly funny Jack Nicholson. He develops certain things for Dave to unleash his anger and get over his problem, instead of being ineffectual and supressing his feelings. Basically Jack pushes Sandler's buttons in various ways that end up with Sandler blowing up at somebody or something. The movie is very funny and mainly because of Nicholson. He and Sandler were quite good together especially in a funny scene in a car while stopped on a bridge. The movie also features other zany characters featuring people like John Turturro, Luis Guzman, a Philadelphia sports fan and a pair of slutty porn stars. There are also numerous cameos and most of them are very funny. They include former Indiana basketball head coach Bobby Knight, Yankee's ace pitcher Roger Clemens, Woody Harrelson as a transvestite/usher, Heather Graham as a chocolate throwing bar girl and John C. Reilly as Dave's boyhood bully now turned monk. Overall, Anger Management is an entertaining romp in the style of most Adam Sandler comedies and yet it suits the subject matter. It is full of absurd and silly situations, practical jokes and tricks, features a cast of wild and wacky characters and filled with fun and enjoyable cameos. Sandler is his usual self, but Jack Nicholson steals the show in a very funny performance as the doctor behind all the zaniness.

It was OK.
The singing bit was great though. The pairing of Nicholson and Sandler works better then I expected. Most of the comedy falls flat. The dramatic scenes.. Well, they vary from horrible to mediocre.
On a related note **VERY MILD SPOILER** is anyone else tired of all this BULLSHIT "Basically nice guy has a shitload of REALLY REALLY REALLY awful things happen to him for no real reason, then everything is wrapped up in a magical happy ending in the last 10 minutes" genre of comedies? Granted, the ending of this one did a better job of it then usual. But BLAH.

I thought the entire movie was the telling of one long ass joke, with no real punchline.
I always thought Billy Madison was funny, but was Sandler's worst film... now Anger Management takes it's place at the bottom of my Sandler Comedies list.
I chuckled here and there, but nothing made me laugh out loud, that's a first.
Sandler's character (Busnick), is a naturally boring, and very bland guy, as I expected; however, the film needed outside help and humor to keep this movie going, and it just didn't happen. Nothing clicked.
The best part of the film was seeing the trailer of Jim Carrey's upcoming film "Bruce Almighty". It's sad when you laugh more at a trailer, then the feature presentation when viewing a comedy.

Upon first hearing that Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler were doing a movie together I was very intrigued. Then I read that it would be about a man in anger management played by Sandler and Nicholson would be playing his doctor. This is a good idea on paper I admit. But, the way that it came out wasn't at all as good as it could have been.
The idea of Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson in a film together is funny in and of itself. Jack Nicholson is one of the greatest actors of our time, and can very obviously do any kind of acting. I thought that it would be about time for him to do a comedy of this kind. Adam Sandler is not very well known for his acting ability, rather for his ability to act like a 10 year old kid and get extremely angry. So, the idea of these two working together is a good idea essentially.
If this film had taken a different approach to the plot at hand it would have been much more successful. In the film, the characters are trying to be funny rather than trying to act realistically(sp?). It's not as funny when the person being laughed at is trying to be funny. A joke is really funny when the person is being as serious as possible. That is why comedies like Best In Show and Dr.Strangelove are so successful at being funny. The antics of Nicholson and Sandler in Anger Management are too staged and don't really seem like what a real person would do in the situation at hand. If this had been more realistic it could have been so much better. So, basically it's the script that really fails here. With a great comedy writer like Charlie Kaufman this could be a hilarious movie.
But, I have to give credit where credit is due. For instance to Nicholson. It was good to see him in a laid back role like this. This is a big turn from his latest performance in About Schmidt, which by the way should have won him an oscar. He obviously had fun making this film and I give him credit for being able to keep a good spirit while working on an obviously flawed film.
Marisa Tomei is incredibly cute as the girlfriend. She always gives a good performance in whatever she does and she gave the best performance in this film. One more thing I did like about the film was the duet of "I Feel Pretty" from West Side Story by Nicholson and Sandler. This was the only thing that I really laughed out loud at during the entire film.
Any other laughs were mostly just small chuckles or me thinking to myself 'that should have been funny, but for some reason I can't bring myself to laugh at it'.
All in all there a few redeeming qualities in Anger Management but there aren't enough there for me to reccomend this film for anything other than a rental when you've got friends over.

not impressed in the least. i don't know what i was expecting, but hey- with jack nicholson how bad can it be, right?
wrong.
the jokes were tired, the incredibly annoying singing of "i feel pretty" already done in another (also very bad) movie recently- "analyze that".... adam sandler playing yet another slight variation on all his other characters...
i could write more, but i'm sure enough other schmoes out there will have their own disappointments to add...

Let's see, I really like Adam Sandler, and I really like Jack Nicholson, so I'll really really like this movie.
Nope
I only enjoyed this movie. There were many great moments, but the down time was way down, and the plot was the worst of all the Sandler vehicles.
I'll see this again, maybe even in a theater, but the formula I hoped for just didn't work.
Still the best movie I'd seen in a while.

Not in recent memory have I seen a film that started off so promising and then veered WAY off in the wrong direction like this.
Anger Management is relentlessly annoying, very sketchy, and rarely truly funny. Let's start with the acting. Adam Sandler is much more tolerable here than usual, but he's no Gene Wilder. He still acts immature at times even if it doesn't suit the character. Jack Nicholson is having a blast, and it's obvious. No major problems with him. However, Oscar-winner Marisa Tomei is totally, stunningly wasted here in her five minutes of one-dimensional screen time as Sandler's token girlfriend. Give her more to do, she can handle it! Too many celeb cameos (Rudy Giuliani can't act...at all). John C. Reilly amused me in his slightly embarrassing turn, though.
The story is an absolute, disjointed mess. The start is very witty and full of potential, but then it turns stupid, and then way too weird, and way, way, way too unrealistic. I know it's a comedy but wow, pretty retarded stuff. The recent use of West Side Story music in films is a trend I hope ends very soon. That was funny the first time I saw it, in the sucky Analyze That, but was boring here. The ending sucked balls, the jokes mostly fell flat, and the whole thing felt like a big, lumbering mess at the conclusion with too many subplots and too many things going on (the friend with the big penis being one of them...OK, he's huge, we get it, move on...). And there was a giant missed opportunity with that grotesquely obese cat. He could have been used to the script's advantage like the dog in There's Something About Mary, but rather, he was reduced to eating crab cakes. Oh well...
Not much more to be said. A big disappointment, but a good start and good performances by Nicholson and the underused Tomei. Man, I hate the Yankees...

I keep forgetting to post my review of this (I saw it the day after it came out), but I'll tell about it now. In short, it was dissapointing. Sandler and Nicholson had good chemistry, and Nicholson delivers his trademark good performance, but the script's jokes were tiresome and lame for the most part. I was expcting a lot more, and even though there were some funny scenes (the scene with the monk especially), the whole film was entirely predictable. A good supporting cast, notably Tomei and Tuturro, also make this film better, and the climax takes place at a Yankees game. I knew this would happen, but still it was cool. There was too much low-brow humor too. Some of this was fine, but it became excessive after a while. Overall it was alright, but very disappointing considering what I had seen Sandler and Nicholson do in the past.

I'm about a month late seeing this movie but, wow, I'm surprised that there are so many negative comments about it. I just saw Anger Management today and I thought it was really funny at times. The funniest *new* movie I've seen in a while. I was thoroughly entertained throughout, which is all I ask for most of the time in a movie. And of the Adam Sandler movies I've seen, I think this is my favorite.
I thought Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson had good chemistry together. It was fun watching them play off of each other. I do agree with Nate, that the wonderful Marisa Tomei is underused (it's kinda sad that this two time Academy Award nominee and one time winner is always underused in her roles).
I think one of the funnier scenes was with Heather Graham and how psychotic she was about her weight. What made me laugh the most was when she kicked Sandler out and he called her a "porker" and "fatty". LOL! I would have done the same thing if someone did that to me and I knew the worst thing to do to get back at someone psychotic like that would be to call them names like that! Too funny!
Anyway, I definitely recommend checking out Anger Management. I enjoyed it immensely, thought it was funny, and was entertained throughout.

I think this is coming to the UK in a few weeks, but from the trailer I've seen the movie looked pretty sparse on the comedy front.

I don't think I can anything that hasn't already been said. I was really pissed when I left the movie after watching this one. I came for a good laugh, and left waiting to laugh. This one fell flat on it's face and missed very badly in the humor department. Sandler seems to be doing the same thing over and over....nice guy....bad situation...things magically get better. It's old and to tell you the truth, I am totally done with him.

A flat out funny film! Jack Nicholson ( he has a great evil face and smile) steals the spotlight! 7/10 The film gets funnier as the film progresses. My favourite scene was the fight scene with that bully turned buddha guy.

Have to say I felt a bit pissed off myself when I left the cinema.
Thought the movie was an unfunny bore depending too much on nicholson and sandler to have good chemistry.
There was a bit of chemistry there but a movie can't work on this alone.
I don't mind Sandler at all, but he can't get away with making these weak movies with soppy endings forever and i'm losing respect for the man.
Nicholson was OK but just had nothing funny or amusing written for him.
when i first heard about the idea i thought that a movie about Adam Sandler's talent for rage (a la Happy Gilmore) was on the cards, but
The singing in the car was funny though:
"I'm preeety!....so preeety!"

I'm suprised people didn't like this movie. I thought it was hilarious from beginning to end and it ended in a completely differnent way than I expected--very rare for a comedy. Nicholson and Sandler are at their best (actually this is the best Sandler film yet IMO) and the supporting actors and the cameos are great. I will post a longer review later but I need to go to bed. I give Anger Management an 8/10. It's the best comedy of the year so far.

Really? You mean you haven't seen 600 other comedies/romantic comedies where an essentially nice guy has a lot of shitty things done to him, only in the end everything wraps up in a miraculously "twist" happy ending?

I didn't say it was a rare ending for a comedy. I said it was rare for a comedy to end in a way that I didn't expect.
