The plot: In the days following the World Trade Center tragedy in the fall of 2001, a journalist (Sigourney Weaver) agrees to help a New York Fire Department captain (Anthony LaPaglia), who lost most of his firemen in the towers, write eulogies for eight of them. As the film progresses, the duo discusses the lives of each of the men, as we learn more about the profession, the emotions resulting from 9/11, and the meaning of heroism. Based on an off-off Broadway play.
After a very successful 2002 which included The Kid Stays in the Picture, Far from Heaven and The Pianist, Focus Features tries to put Deliver Us from Eva behind it by resuming its indie output of personal, highbrow stories. But I don't think The Guys is going to help much; while I admire the good intentions, they can only go so far. This movie looks rather dry and boring; the material may work on stage, but appears to be too touchy-feelie for me to see this in theatres.
The Guys opens April 4 in limited release.
