For those that don't know, the Rick Moranis remake of Little Shop of Horrors got a special edition DVD a couple years ago. I almost picked it up the first week as I really wanted the alternate ending it had. Plus it is one of my favorite movies...

But ya know what happened? It got recalled by the producer after a week. They now sell for $100+ on eBay - occasionally exceeding $200. I'm not willing to spend that kind of money for one movie.

Eventually, the DVD was reissued WITHOUT the ending, and no other changes! Amazon even mentions this change on their website (probably got complaints).

The producer claims it was because it was a low quality version (it was black and white, mono, with incomplete sound effects and mostly missing music, except the musical number at the end) and he had a better one - BUT OF COURSE, the new one DOES NOT have his phantom better version.

So WTF did he do this? Just to be an asshole? Why WOULDN'T he want other people to see the films original ending? For those that don't know, Audry and Seymour both get eaten, the plants get sold across American, and then conquer the earth set to the music "Don't Feed the Plants". It ends with two of them on the Statue of Liberty. The special effects guys think they would of won best special effects if the sequence had been left in - I am inclined to agree, since I have seen the ending and it is very impressive stuff - cost over $1,000,000 to do it all too (not much today, but they were doing stop motion and puppetry, much cheaper then CGI).

So does anyone know the REAL reason he had the ending cut out? Just a dickhead?

Sigh....

Rick Moranis is a god in my eyes... The producer probably didn't want to see anything coming close to his death, even if it was fake on screen death. I can only imagine a world without him.

A slight personal note: I like the cheesy happy ending better. Seems to fit better.

However, I think the original black and white version has a great ending as well.

Let's remember that the '86 versioni of Little Shop of Horrors isn't really a remake of the old Roger Corman movie. It was, I believe, an adaptation of a Broadway musical that was based on the earlier movie.

Does that make sense?

Yeah, that's what it is.. But it's less of a mouthful to just say it's a normal remake. :)

Oh yes, the musical play version ends the way the alternate original ending does.
