Greatest AMERICAN movies, I might add...
Best: GoodFellas
Worst: Forrest Gump
Most Overrated: Citizen Kane
Just because those pretencious fucks says it's the best film ever, everybody else don't have to think so.
Most underrated: GoodFellas
At nr. 94???
And you should switch places with Fargo and Big Lebowski.

Favorites: The Godfather Part II
Least Favorite: Sound of Music (I don't see all the hoopla)
I could have sworn Manhattan was on that list, but I guess not, so my favorite is The Third Man.
The worst is Birth of a Nation. Most people have not seen this film, but we watched it in a film studies class, and it is the single most despicable film I've ever seen. It's only on here because it practically invented camera tricks, but it's content is really horrible.

I suppose you're talking to bob and I, but really, what did you find redeemable about this movie? How can it even earn it a 9? Really, im not shooting down your ratings or your taste, but the only thing this film has to offer (at least that i know of) is that it was the first feature length movie, and invented a lot of camera tricks (because it was the first). Really, what elements in this movie accumulate to get an almost perfect score of 9?

My favorite is definitely non other than Citizen Kane. Pulp Fiction is a close second, though.
My least favorite...maybe E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial.

That is the single most confounding post I've ever seen. I mean, Godfather Part II is not entertaining, but Birth of a Nation is? What about a story depicting the Ku Klux Klan as good guys is so entertaining? I'm not saying you're a racist, because I severely doubt you are, but it's still weird to me.

Influential does not equal great, the film is interesting only as a piece of cinema history, it is an unbearably evil film. Like Riefenstahl's Triumph of The Will but not as well-directed, the film can be appreciated on a visual level and for the ground it broke (or rather, popularized) but it is not GOOD and certainly not GREAT. Griffith did do some great movies later on though, Intolerance and Broken Blossoms both deal with the awfulness of racism that Birth of A Nation glorifies.

Everyone, well almost everyone was like that in 1915. The civil war was only a faded memory then. It was told from the point of view of the Southerners. Thye director was from the south. The film yes it's horribly racist. I could see that from the beginning with that comment about america being poisoned by the first african seed, It was a terribly racist film. But it had a point. Birth of a Nation from me: 8/10. Boring at times, but plenty of action. Gone with the Wind andSong of the South tell the tame story. This is how it happened. And Im not saying the KKK was a bunch of heroes, but this is how the southerns felt, and how they still feel alot.
Best:

Worst:

Most overrated:

your post contradicted itself quite a few times here. First everyone stood behind BIRTH OF A NATION, then almost everyone, then the South.

Yeah, the film is racist, but what point did it have? Gone with the Wind is nothing like Birth of a Nation at all. The plot of Gone with a wind is a love story, just because it shows slaves is not disgusting, thats what really happened. Scarlet's family owned slaves, and things of that sort happened back then, but in no way do I recall this film ever undermining blacks, the film was from a point in history, and black slavery was a part of that.
Birth of a Nation, on the other hand, doesn't really have a plot except for how the Ku Klux Klan is responislbe for the resconstruction of America after the Civil War. and how it all started from the KKK founder saving an innocent woman from a Big, dumb-looking, face-painted black guy. It doesn't just so slaves, like Gone With the Wind, but no black person in this film is intelligent, all of the captions for them (it was silent) show that they have bad grammar, and are morons. I really dont see how this and Gone with the Wind compare at all, let alone "tell the same story"....

I dont know what they teach you about the Southern U.S. up there in Cananda, but I assure you, "this is how the southerns felt, and how they still feel alot." is a totally FALSE statement. I was born and raised in Texas, and I don't recall ever knowing a racist. And now i live in South Florida, and still the closest thing to racism I have ever seen in person is a couple of cars with a Confederate bumper sticker.
blah, ive got lots of more stuff to say, but i'll see your reply first

Definitely. Sure, it's fun to make jokes about the south (especially when you, like I do, live there)...but...when it comes down to it, Southern USA gets a bad wrap. I've lived here for 9 long years (originally hailing from New York), and while I have come upon some racism in my time, they are maybe 4% of the views I've seen.
I'm not saying that racism is completely gone in the south, but, really, is it gone *anywhere*? There are always some people who are closed minded. Everywhere. From New York to Paris to Moscow to Sidney to L.A. and back again.
Birth of a Nation may have shown a viewpoint of the south BACK THEN...but it certainly does not *at all* represent the majority of the south now.

1. this is on topic, we're stating why we like/dislike a movie on the list posted by the thread-starter
2. Another debate? what's wrong with disagreeing? this is a discussion board to discuss movies, and it would be a VERY dull board if everyone agreed on everything. There's nothing wrong with discussing objective points. as far as i know, there's still no thought police
3. i didn't see this as heated, 'twas a healthy discussion.
I don't know. I was getting pretty pissed off...;)

I never said disagreeing was bad. I just get the feeling that if this goes on for too long this might turn into a 'Birth of a Nation' discussion thread. If I made it sound like I had a problem with the discussion then I apologize.
