What are your favorite films that sadly turned out to be the last for their directors?

Two instantly come to mind for me: Stanley Kubrick's EYES WIDE SHUT and Alfred Hitchcock's FAMILY PLOT, both imperfect, but damn good pictures, fitting ends to two long and great careers.

Eyes Wide Shut is definitely up there.

I actually think that Family Plot is one of, if not the worst film Hitchcock made, so it's kinda painful for me to think "that's the last thing he ever shot".

I'd have to go with Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut"

Agreed. Eyes Wide Shut is imperfect, but very good :)

Kinji Fukasaku's fantastic Battle Royale and Sergio Leone's epic Once Upon a Time in America also come to mind. Two great last films...

That is what I was going to say. Blow (9/10) proved Demme was a great director, and I was looking forward to seeing him develop as an artist through his career, but sadly, he passed away before this could happen.
