When someone asks you what the most emotional scene in a movie is, you probably think of the saddest one. This is not what I have in mind for this thread. It can be sad, happy, triumphant, give you goosebumps...Whatever!! You can choose as many as you want, just don't take up 2000 lines. So what comes to mind. Also...don't forget to give a reason why you think it is. Anyway, on with the thread.

LOTR: Fellowship Of The Ring - When Gandalf falls from the bridge and Frodo screams. The music and the faces of the characters really do it for me.

Braveheart - William Wallace's speech at the battle of Sterling. Very moving. Music plays a considerable part in this scene.

Gladiator - The image of Maximus walking through the field after he dies. I just get goosebumps whenever I see it.

Heat - The final image of Pacino and de Niro grasping each others hands. It's just great how the movie ends with the two opposing characters respecting each other, even though they fought all the way through.

Glory - The scene where Gould leads the men into battle at Fort Wagner. Very moving.

Walk to Remember- The part where she tells he guy that she has cancer.

Rules of Attraction- The part where the girl commits suicide.

Crossroads- The part where the mom tells the girl she doesn't want her and the part where the pregnet girl falls down the stairs.

And you konw... CHICK FLICKS!

This has to be my favorite emotional scene. It has such power and emotion especially with the music done by Moby in that scene it almost has me at tears!

That's one of the things I don't like about Peter Jackson's direction in LOTR is the way he handles emotional scenes. He goes overly melodramatic and shit, bringing in the slow-motion and everything. That scene were Gandalf falls is just so laughably melodramatic (does that make sense) with Frodo screaming "Nooooooooo!" in slow-motion. Ugh, he does that slow-motion shit a lot!

Anyway, my choice is Emily Watson in HILARY AND JACKIE. Towards the end when she's suffering from full-blown Multiple Sclerosis and she's in her wheelchair listening to a record of (I think) herself playing the cello as she's looking at her cello, crying. Powerful stuff.

My choice also.

This scene absolutely crushes me...Timothy Spall is truly fucking great.

"She can't help it, she never had enough love..."

Just beautiful dialogue throughout...:(

Some SUPERB selections thus far...

The Other, great choice with Hilary & Jackie...that's a gut-wrenchingly sad scene.

Sad Man and Annie Hall...spot on also with Dancer in the Dark, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and The Hours.

I've got to add the following...

~10 Rillington Place - John Hurt cries ""Christy done it! Christy done it!"...Gawd, I can't bear to watch.

~Donnie Darko - Donnie's family outside on the front lawn. The look on his mother's face just pains me...and the way she smokes that ciggie.

~Let Him Have It - Derek Bentley faces the gallows...Jesus, enough said.

Great topic!

A few sad ones:

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***

Lantana where Sonja (Kerry Armstrong's character) is seeing a therapist, Dr. Valerie Somers (Barbara Hershey), and confesses her marriage “feels like we’re going through the motions.”...when Dr. Somers asks Sonja what she wants her marriage to be like, she says: “Passionate and challenging and honest,”...The way she says it gives me shivers every time I see it...truly passionate, brilliant acting.

Onegin where, right at the end, Onegin (Ralph Fiennes) admits his love for Tatyana (Liv Tyler)...he begs her to save him...she says that she can't, she is married and has to remain faithful to her husband. Onegin is so depressed afterwards and basically admits that his life is at an end and has no purpose etc...very sad

Dead Poet's Society when Robert Sean Leonard's character Neil commits suicide....just plain depressing.

Road to Perdition when Tom Hanks' wife and little boy get shot

Truly, Madly, Deeply the fact the Nina has to live without Jamie...but Jamie revisits her as a ghost and she can't be with him.

Okay, when someone thinks emotions, they don't think of Reservoir Dogs, however, I do. When Mr. Orange is lying on the ramp in the factory and he's yelling at the officer just when he got his ear cut off. The officer is crying about how he's now deformed and suddenly, Tim Roth, who's pretty quiet and mellow throughout the whole movie, is transformed into this enraged person. And he starts screaming "Fuck you! Fuck you! I'm fuckin' dyin'! I'm fuckin dyin'!" I'm serious when I tell you that sent goosbumbs up my arm. The only reason that movie was good was because of the raw emotion that the actors so wonderfully showed. And that is my favorite emotional scene from a movie.

The car wreck at the end of Adaptation ,when Donald got put right through the windshield and died was very sad. I don't usually get teary eyed during a movie either.

THE TRUMAN SHOW- Again, the very end.

SPEED - The scene with the bus and the big gap in the freeway; the scene where Keanu and Sandra get off the bus.

BOYZ N THE HOOD - Ally scene.

SPOILERS

"MAGNOLIA" - Linda's (Julainne Moore) breakdown at the drugstore..
"You motherfukcer...you fucking asshole. Who the fuck do you think you are? I come in here, you don't know me, you don't know who I am, what my life is, and you have the the balls, the decency to ask me a question about my life? I come in here, I give these things to you, you check, you make your phonecalls, look suspicious, ask questions... I am sick! I have sickness all around me! And you fucking ask me my life, what's wrong? Have you seen death in your bed? In your house? Where's your fucking decency?"
It's hilarious and heart-breaking at the same time. Possibly one of the very best scenes Moore's ever done, and that is really saying something.

"FAR FROM HEAVEN"
The last scene at the train station as Raymond (Dennis Haysbert) is leaving. There's no dialogue in the scene, but Moore's eyes and Berstein's score speak volumes.

"THE HOURS"
The hotel-room scene as Laura Brown is comtemplating suicide, and "It is possible to die. It IS possible to die" is heard in Virginia's voiceover. One of my favorite lines in the movie.

MOULIN ROUGE!
As a few people have said already – Satine dying on Christian's arms. "You've got to go on, Christian. Tell our story. That way I 'll always be with you." I'm getting teary eyed just thinking about it.

"GIA"
When Linda (Elizabeth Mitchell) makes Gia (A. Jolie) choose between her and drugs. And she chooses drugs. God, I just fall apart every time I watch that scene.

"LOST & DELIRIOUS"
The scene when Victoria (Jessica Pare) tells Pauli (Piper Perabo) that she loves her more than she will ever love anyone, but that "it could never, ever be".

"THE END OF THE AFFAIR"
When Sarah (Julainne Moore) leaves Maurice (Ralph Fiennes), having made a promise to God to give him up forever if he only saves his life.
Sarah: "Some people go on loving God all their loives without ever seeing him. "
Maurice: "That's not my kind of love"
Sarah: "Maybe there is no other kind."

"JERRY MAGUIRE"
"You had me at hello. You had me at hello... "

Spoilers for Dancer In The Dark, Schindler's List, Quills, Lantana, Lolita et al.

Dancer In The Dark- the execution scene. It left me feeling as though I had been kicked in the stomach. The interruption of the song, the closeup on her glasses on the floor, the reaction of the prison guard- genuinely heartbreaking.

Schindler's List- Oskar's breakdown. "This...this is five Jews!" I'd be so bold to say that that was the finest display of acting that I have ever seen. Amon Goeth touching his reflection in the mirror and murmuring "I pardon you" is also noteworthy. Simultaneously chilling and gutwrenching.

Quills- loads of short ones from this film. The first one that springs to mind is the Abbe's discovery of Madeleine's body- the way he cradles her and cries shows the zenith of his emotional unravelling. The Marquis' final breakdown when he sobs and begs for a "proper burial" for her. And THAT angst-ridden kiss.

Lantana- the final sequence where we see all of the characters. John stands on a hilltop, mourning the death of his wife and daughter, Leon sobs in his car as he hears his wife's tape being played, Jane dances alone, Paula and Nick reluctantly hold each other.

Lolita ('97)- Humbert breaks down into tears upon finally reuniting with Dolores. "Don't touch me. I'll die if you touch me."

25th Hour- Montgomery's "fuck you" rant in the mirror.

I genuinely don't like overly emotional scenes in movies, but here are some that were able to catch me hook, line and sinker:

*Of course there are spoilers so just read the bold title; if you've seen it, good. If you haven't, just keep moving...*

T2: Judgment Day - When Ahnuld gets lowered into the steel. I'll go on record as saying the T2 score is the most moving score I've ever heard. That probably played a huge part in its impact.

Fellowship Of The Ring - Boromir's death. Once again, music played a large part in this, but just the timing is amazing at striking just the right emotional cords.

Brock-Landers
05-01-2003, 01:50 PM
Magnolia - Frank T.J. Mackey with his father.

The Godfather Part II - When Micheal has his brother killed.

The Empire Strikes Back - Were Leia said "I Love You" and Han Solo said "I Know".

The Big Lebowski - When Donnie dies.

Scarface - When Tony Montana gets killed.

And for Forest Gump, when he's talking to Jenny's grave, it just shows that even when life seems to be at it's best, something can still come along and kick you in the balls.
