For those who chose it, the uncut version of Requiem For A Dream is actually unrated, not NC-17, and the other version is R, it's not an NC-17 film. Aronofsky chose to not use the MPAA rating and Artisan was ballsy enough to stand by him.

Personally, I think "Requiem for a Dream" counts as an NC-17 film, in a way. The MPAA rating Afronosky and Artisan refused to use for the film was an NC-17. It definitely wasn't anything else....

Well, yes the MPAA screened it and decided it would be NC-17, but since Artisan never used their rating, it never really was an NC-17 film. Other examples of this phenomenon would be KIDS, Henry: Portrait of A Serial Killer, and Happiness, often when a controversial film is going to be given an NC-17 the filmmaker or studio decides to simply not rate it at all rather than have the NC-17 stigma, so the movie never has a rating. If lucky, sometimes they can get an appeal and have an NC-17 changed to an R, such as Clerks and Your Friends & Neighbors, or make some cuts and have it changed, like American Psycho or South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut.
The MPAA does not impose itself on films and it is not neccesary for a film to be rated, each film company or director has to decide whether to accept and use the rating given or not, of course the overwhelming majority do, but if they choose not to the movie is never given a rating at all, so thus couldn't really be classified under anything but "unrated".

Well, I know exactly why directors and studios refuse to use the NC-17 rating. Basically, the rating is the "kiss of death". Which means their films will most likely get nowhere with any kind of audience, except maybe the artsy crowds.

What in fuck's sake does Donnie Darko have in it that is worse than what's in Saving Private Ryan, some language, a masturbation comment? Jesus, that's just messed up. Even Fight Club has far less brutality than SPR. And I'm suprised at a PG for The Godfather II, it's pretty violent.

Well Quentin, "Donnie Darko" does feature one twisted rabbit that can seriously disturbed certain individuals. I think that's why it has a higher rating than "Saving Private Ryan".
:D :D :D
Seriously though, that's screwed up.

The reason Saving Private Ryan has a lower rating is because it could be seen as educational I don't agree with the PG rating for The Godfather part 2 either or the R16 for Donnie Darko.
New Zealand does have a lot of messed up ratings that i don't understand.

The Godfather Part 2 is R16 isn't it?
We seem to have a pattern over here in NZ. The censors seem to give war movies R15 (Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates), fucked up movies R16 (Memento, Donnie Darko), and graphic movies or social commentaries R18 (Fight Club, Requiem for a Dream).
I wish we had the Australian ratings. Theres is way better.
