City of God is a Brazillian film. I am shocked to hear this one hasn't come up yet. It is subtitled in english. This is one of the best films I've ever seen. I know it's showing in CA and probably NY. Sorry everyonew else. You must rent it when it comes out on DVD though. It's soooo good.

absolutely fantastic

delivered its themes in a blistering and powerful fashion.

Takes Rockets identity as a photogrpaher and transports it to the films narrative structure, the film being displayed in little snapshots, stories of peoples lives within the tale.

woderful stuff,,,robbed at the oscars not even a nomination

this truly is one of the best I have seen in a long time. Fuck "Gangs of New York", if you want to see a real 'gang' movie check out "City of God". This film has ended up on my top 20 films of all time list.

I couldn't agree more. My review of CITY OF GOD has been sitting in the sidelines for some time now, but it's my #1 favorite movie of the year so far. Gritty, realistic, violent, emotional and waaaaaay epic....a superb film with a solid cast. I hope to get my review up soon....

Do so, I've really been interested in what you think of COG. I just wish they'd have some DVD info by now since it did have a limited release from last December

One of the most powerful movies ive ever seen.
This is real gangster life and boy is it fucked.
The acting is top notch and the directing is amazing, it was really robbed at the Oscars but once i saw i knew that Oscar wouldnt include it coz its so damn violent and coz it involves 8-10 year olds.
9/10 - the best this year, i cant wait for the DVD.
Jo gives that review man!

How good was the camera work - especially the chicken chasing scene?! I was worried about the way it was going to be shot, but the first few scenes allayed my fears. Perfect camera positions throughout never made me feel like I was anything but 'the fourth wall'.

Extraodinary film, in the way it made the insane seem normal, everyday, almost natural. I was even taken aback when the film showed it's softer side, so hopless and out of place the slum is for hopes, dreams, and other beautiful human emotions.

The narration enhanced, rather than detracted from the stroy line, because it was blunt matter-of-fact statement, rather than an attempt at provoking thought, and profoundness.

The constant reguritation and turnover of characters entirely bereft of decency, enhances this film's intent as a raw take on life in the most dangerous slum precinct on the outskirts of Rio.

You know a non-english film is excellent when you start reading the sub-titles at an almost sub-conscious level. Ie - it doesn't come at a visual cost.
