Hawks was one of Hollywood's most versatile and not to mention underrated directors. Which Howard Hawks film/s have you seen and which one is your favorite?

I voted for Red River, which is my favourite of the three (:() I've seen (the other two being Rio Bravo and The Big Sleep)

Rio Bravo/El Dorado/Rio Lobo: Howard Hawks/John Wayne (and most importantly) Leigh Brackett. They all brought out the best in each other.

Ironically, Turner Classic Movies is having a Howard Hawks night. They started with I Was a Male War Bride (1949) - 8/10 with Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan, which I just finished watching and liked quite a lot. Rio Bravo (1959) is on now, followed by The Big Sleep (1946) and Only Angels Have Wings (1939).

Leigh Brackett (along w/ Hawks and William Faulkner) also worked on the script for The Big Sleep. It has a lot of great dialogue and atmospherics, but there's a murder that's never solved...

They basically hung out w/ Bogart and Bacall and partied all the time.

I'm going with either Bringing Up Baby or Red River. The Big Sleep was good, but it's plot was too convoluted, and I think the very concept behind Rio Bravo is reprehensible--how that movie came to be. I haven't seen his version of Scarface, so I can't comment.

Damn, he was good. They oughta make kids watch all his films these days so they can see where modern directors get so much of their good stuff.

Red River is one of my litmus films.

8.5/10

They're all great, but FRIDAY rules in my book.

Also, did he produce the original version of THE THING, or is he the unbilled director as well?

I haven't seen all of them listed, but Rio Bravo would have to be my favorite that I've seen.

I picked Red River though Rio Bravo is up there too.

Never saw his version of Scarface, though the De Palma version is kickass.
