It's one of the newest inventions for multi-channel, digital sound, invented in 1992. Kind of like Dolby Digital, but with more punch.

Last year they started using DTS-ES, which is (i think) DTS with THX support, on theatrical releases for films. The first video releases of it to my knowledge were Suspria and Bad Taste.
