The plot: "Three friends begin a dangerous three-way relationship that spirals out of control, leading to dire consequences that haunt them ten years later."
Jeez, can that description be any more vague? At least it's not a Vin Diesel sequel.
Mark Ruffalo is looking for a comeback after an illness (cancer?) kept him from capitalizing on the buzz from You Can Count on Me. (He was attached to Signs but had to drop out.) The studio movies he's been recently - Windtalkers and View from the Top - were beneficial to no one, so Ruffalo appears to be starting over with XX/XY, another indie character drama that received the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
Co-star Kathleen Robertson has had a wobbly career. A stint on 90210 led to roles in a few queer indie flicks (Nowhere, Psycho Beach Party), a part in I Am Sam, and a couple of Hollywood movies that are best stated without comment (Beautiful, Scary Movie 2). XX/XY looks to put some lustre on her resumé.
Maya Stange, the third member of this menage, is an actress unfamiliar to me. Her filmography is a roll-call of obscure titles; one of them (Head On, about a teen's search for sexual identity), however, looks like something I wouldn't mind seeing. Another one, something from Australia called Baby Bath Massacre, appears to be her biggest role (she's top-billed on IMDb). At the very least, XX/XY will increase her radar on the Hollywood scene.
XX/XY opens April 11 in limited release.
Edit: LOVE Kathleen's Hedwig-inspired coiffure!
