Personally, I think she's FOUL. I haven't seen her in much, but when I do I can't take my eyes off the gigantic noggin.

Um, hello? Breaking the Waves is perhaps the best movie I have ever seen!

She's a great actress and she's often very pretty in all her films, I never noticed a gigantic noggin'. (?)

BREAKING THE WAVES is probably one the best films of the last 10 years, I loved it and it's mostly due to her performance.

She was adorable in the so-so RED DRAGON and impressed me as well in PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE.

Now that I think of it, she's great in almost any film she's been in.

Yay!

That's pretty sneaky Greb, it looks like you went out of your way to find a bad looking picture of Watson, you dog.

I don't blame you, if I was going to Nay an actress I don't like (Jennifer Lopez), I'd probably find a horrid pic to post as well.

I agree with Indiana here, she is a great actress (especially in Breaking The Waves, an amazing film), and can look quite cute in some of her flicks also. Emily gets a big YAY from me!

YAY. Great actress, and although she's far from hot, she often is kinda pretty.

She stole my heart in Breaking The waves, she's a fantastic actress, not the prettiest actress around, but she sure has a certain presence which is undeniable.

And I have to say Greb, that's about the ugliest picture you could have chosen of her.. It's not even a picture, it's a shot from Breaking The Waves. There must be more pictures of her where she is photographed decently..

Jeeeeeesus, are you joking!?

Check out Breaking The Waves, Hilary & Jackie, Gosford Park and Punch-Drunk Love!!!!

She made RED DRAGON completely bearable.

The lady has barely been working 10 YEARS and she is already ONE of the GREATEST actresses around.

Talent: Big YAY. She's brilliant in everything I have seen her in, ESPECIALLY the little-seen Luzhin Defence.

Pretty? Yeah. She is unique looking, and not at ALL ugly.

You call Emily ugly, then you are calling all the lady schmoes ugly!

Most of us bare a more closer resemblance to her simple, quiet beauty than most of the flashy, painted meat in Hollywood that call themselves actresses.

Big friggin' YAY! Most especially in the acting department.

And Greb, you've seen PJ Harvey's nose, and you call Emily's huge?

She's a big fat YAY.

Absolutely incredible in Hilary & Jackie. Not to mention Gosford Park. I didn't like Red Dragon but she was wonderful in her role.

Erm... WHAT?????!!!!

Emily Watson is EASILY one of the best actresses working today and probably one of the greatest actresses ever in film history. Her filmography is full of shatteringly brilliant performances.

And she is attractive, even if she can't compete with some of the drop-dead gorgeus Hollywood starlets. She looks like an ordinary, above average looking woman. What she lacks in supermodel looks, she wins all the way in charm and acting ability.

Precisely...

That's got to be one of the most ridiculous statements I've EVER read on this site......but like you say Maggot, you are completely entitled to your opinion.

IMO, Emily is constantly brilliant...and it's almost impossible to believe that she has only been around since 1996 (her fabulous debut performance with Breaking The Waves of course)...

FUCK, not yet a decade...and she's achieved a hell of a lot more than your average Hollywood dolly-bird.

Electriclite is completely correct GENTS...

People are insulting Watson for being perfectly NORMAL, for appearing content in her face and figure despite blemishes.

Perhaps I'm being a tad cynical but I expect we've got a damn sight more "Watson's" cruising JoBlo...as opposed to "Theron's" and "Portman's".

I'm fairly sure that we laydeez don't all adhere to what some of you boys actually class as "attractive" (and I sense there is definite criteria to be met)...to be perfectly honest with you, I doubt many of the intelligent attractive gals who frequent these forums would actually want to.

Oh lads...lads, don't be too crushed...;)

Since my very early days on this board, I've expressed my love for Thora Birch and Emily Watson.. not only in the looks department but their acting abilities too. To me, the two of them are the most beautiful and talented women in movies today.

Two threads on the same day dissing both Emily and Thora both made by Grebdron and quoth. Riiiiight.

Anyway, if it isn't blatantly obvious already... yay.

The Other

A big fat YAY!

Even if you don't think she's good-looking (which I think she is) you can't deny that she's a BRILLIANT actress. Those who say she isn't, obviously haven't seen her in Breaking the Waves and Hilary and Jackie. BOTH of those two performanes are two of the best performances I've ever seen. She should have won the Oscar for both - Gwyneth Paltrow and Frances McDormand? Please! (at least she was nominated for those two small films).

She was also great in Gosford Park, and made Red Dragon & Punch-Drunk Love watchable.

She gets a huge "yay" from me. A truly astounding actress - Ms Watson lights up a screen. Endlessly versatile, dynamic and admirably enigmatic, she can lift even the direst of films out of the dregs.

She can move you just as much, if not more, with one single understated, perfectly observed peformance than a million Hollywood overacters. She's never in the gossip columns, keeps herself to herself and is clearly dedicated to her work. She's there to act - not to be a celebrity.

Guys, guys, come on. There is no way that she is ugly. I personally think she's far better than average looking, but when she's inevitably compared to picture-perfect Hollywood actresses, then of course she's going to look more like your next door neighbour than your masturbatory fantasy. I remember reading an Charlize vs Emily thread, based entirely on looks- come on fellas, give us some credit. Compare anyone to Charlize Theron and they'll probably look like a Plain Jane too.

As it has been mentioned before, criticising her for being ugly is like criticising a large percentage of the female population- we're not all drop dead gorgeous, perfectly formed creatures. Which, in all honesty, probably adds to the appeal.

Good on ya, Miss Watson.

To me, this is a thread about looks, and I don't find her attractive, at all.

I have no problem with her nose, Lady E. Just her forehead.

I even mentioned that I haven't seen her in much, so I'm not judging her acting ability. I'm sure she's a master thespian.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming.;)

that is a shabby accusation sir. there were no concerted practices in action here. the thora thread has sprung from a simple conversation with my girlfriend about whether she was a credible and attractive actress, a conversation which i have turned into a thread.

besides, i dont have a clue what schmoe finds what actor/actress attractive, the sheer numbers make remembering that pretty difficult you know. i didnt have a clue that thora meant so much to you. i have a poor short term memory, and i tend to forget things like that very quickly, so really, i didnt have a clue.

who the hell is grebdron anyway? :D

I don't think it's a good idea to make this thread if you haven't seen her in much.

BTW Greb: do you like her acting?

I don't think she's really hot, but at times she looks cute. She looks like an average British woman, which is generally ok.

For talent, however, she blows 99.9% of any other current actress out of the water with a nuke.

I'll associate myself w/ all the raves concerning her ability that BCV and the others have posted, She's completely brilliant.

Anybody who thinks she's not sexy is urged to see Metroland. If her assembled charms: great hair, smooth skin, droll smile, lovely lilting accent, expressive robin's egg blue eyes and nice, soft hooters (which look even better wet and soapy, and feature wonderfully pale areolas) don't get you...then go in peace.

I'd really like to know why exactly Mad Maggot can't even consider her an actress

When exactly has Emily ever delivered a bad performance? She's consitantly brilliant. Definatly one of the best... IMO

Definite YAY, I agree with pretty much everything that BCV has said in this thread. One of the best actresses working today.

And she is not unattractive, dammit! ;)

Not ugly but not very attractive either however she is a great actress so she's a yay from me.

Amazing actress, but not the greatest looks but that's OK. She is a BRILLIANT actress and I'd loved her in everything I've seen her in!

Yay! She's a great actress. I just saw Red Dragon the other day and she gave an excellent performance in it, I'd say it was the best performance in it.

A Definite YAY for me. I have never disliked a performance by her ever. Breaking the waves is a masterpiece and largely thanks to her performance in it. I also really enjoyed her turns in The Boxer and Punch Drunk Love. She was pretty much the only thing I liked about Red Dragon.

Lazy Boy

Yay!

I kind of like her looks; she's cute, in a kewpie doll sort of way. Nothing ugly about her at all...

The fact that Hollywood goes out of its way to say that being "oh-so-fucking-gorgeous" is the in thing, well, is wrong headed. Emily Watson is one of my favorite actresses, the kind you know can give a good performance even when they're in a bad/mediocre film (i.e. Red Dragon). She's talented and (IMO) attractive, so thumbs up from me.

Now come to think of it, I give her a big YAY for both acting and looks. She is very cute, actually and her eyes are very pretty. And I did mention in my last post that she's a FANTASTIC actress, and I'll stick to that opinion. She deserved an oscar for both Breaking the Waves and Hilary and Jackie. I do tend to agree with Mad Maggot most of the time but how can you not call her an actress? She is just amazing, watch some of her work and you'll find out. :)

A fantastic and beautiful actress, when I saw her in "Breaking The Waves" didn't even know who she was, what a masterpiece of acting in that flick and since that flick have looked forwarded to her other films, "Hilary and Jackie" another great performance and liked her alot in Angela's Ashes, Red Dragon, Gosford Park and Life and Death of Peter Sellers.
