A swagful of new releases all made their mark this week with JOHNNY ENGLISH taking the top spot, much to my surprise. The disappointing Rowan Atkinson spy spoof, which I think will take a significant drop next week, took in $2,392,396. The crude Aussie comedy FAT PIZZA reached #2 with $1,164,578 whilst the comedy sequel SHANGHAI KNIGHTS which has been receiving the best reviews out of the top 3 films came in at #3 with $1,036,537. Former US Box Office champ KANGAROO JACK didn't make much of an impact coming in at #8 with $423,748 and fellow kiddie flick JUNGLE BOOK 2 earned $410,753 to make #9. A bunch of films suffered drops, most notably NED KELLY which dropped 46%, DREAMCATCHER and DAREDEVIL fell 55%, whilst CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE and former number #1 MAID IN MANHATTAN dropped 62% and 65% respectively. An interesting week.
THIS WEEK (April 17th): The main release this week is current Box Office Champion ANGER MANAGEMENT. The Jack Nicholson/Adam Sandler comedy goes up against John Malkovich in the sequel RIPLEY'S GAME and the drama MAGDALENE SISTERS. I think Jack and Adam have the best chance at #1, if not, a definite Top 5 placing.
