There isn't much NBA talk on this forum yet, but seeing as this is one of the 4 major sports, it definitely deserves a place on the top of the board for the post-season.
So, if you got favorite teams, first round predictions and playoff rants this is the place to vent!:)
These are the first round match-ups...

Orlando Magic @ Detroit Pistons
Milwaukee Bucks @ New Jersey Nets
Boston Celtics @ Indiana Pacers
New Orleans Hornets @ Philadelphia 76'ers

Phoenix Suns @ San Antonio Spurs
Utah Jazz @ Sacramento Kings
Portland Trailblazers @ Dallas Mavericks
Los Angeles Lakers @ Minnesota Timberwolves
I'm not sure of my picks quite yet but needless to say I hate the Lakers and I'm rooting for one team to take it all...

I am starting to get pretty excited about the playoffs. Its pretty wide open as far as I can tell.
I could see any of the top four East teams making the finals.
My guess is that the Spurs will win it all.
The Kings and Mavericks are too weak-minded, they will wilt in the clutch. Lakers have a chance, but I dont think they could get past San Antonio.

Anybody can come out of the East. The 8 seed is just as likely as the 1 seed to advance and eventually lose to a West team in the finals.
Don't write the Suns off so quickly. They give the Spurs fits, and won the season series 3-1.
Lakers in 5 against Minnesota, then in 6 against San Antonio.

I fancy us to beat the Pistons...just.
Mind I thought we'd win last year against The Hornets...how wrong was I?
I also think that San Antonio will triumph over the Celtics in the final...just a feeling I have.

L.A doesn't have it easy in the playoffs this year, although they are one of the top runners for the NBA championship, it will be tough for them to get there because they lost the homecourt advantage. As far as this year's line-up of teams go, I'm rooting for the Mavericks.

Well, I'm going for Lakers all the way. They're not gonna have it easy, but I hope they do their best. In the East, I'm going for the 76ers.
The games I'm looking forward to the most, is Lakers vs. Timberwolves, Nets vs. Bucks, and Trailblazers vs. Mavericks.
In the end, my final prediction is.....
Hell, I don't know, this is the NBA playoffs, anything can happen.... :D :D :D

I rooting for the Timberwolves of course. Although by a Blazers loss to the Clippers just sealed their fate. I predict they might win 2 games agaisnt LA in the first round. They matchup poor with both Shaq (Nesterovic, Jackson, Joe Smith) and Bryant (if Wally plays him else maybe Peeler. The only way will be to out score them and make it an up and down game and if a third scorer gets hot - maybe Hudson. Man seven straight first round exits. Hopefully Garnett can get the MVP.

If the lakers have to play the Mavs at some point, I like our chances. We just match up very well against Dallas. I think it's been 13 years since Dallas won a game in LA, and we can win in Dallas no problem. Home court shouldn't mean much in that series.

Maybe the NBA wanted the playoffs to be more challenging, so they made the first round 7-gamers. Who knows why they did it, but I think it's cool. Now, the first round should be more, well, challenging.... :D

I think another reason why the made the first round 7 games, was because it would make every round a best of 7, meaning it would follow the 7 game pattern as the semifinals, conference finals, and NBA finals did.

Fuck you Frank Johnson!
When your team is shutting down the number one team in the league, you don't take out 3 of the players on the floor and replace them with guys who have no chance of holding on to the lead...if the Suns lose, it's because of him.

Suns over Spurs is a big surprise but I imagine San Antonio will step it up in game 2 in a big way.
Otherwise the the games were fairly predictable:
Milwaukee - 96
New Jersey - 109
Boston - 103
Indiana - 100
Portland - 86
Dallas - 96
Phoenix - 96
San Antonio - 95
And early on, Utah is defeating Sacramento...let's hope they can hold that lead! :D

My thoughts.....
New Jersey Nets vs. Milwaukee Bucks - Game 1:
Gary Payton and the Bucks couldn't really get anything going today, but they'll be back... I think.
Boston Celtics vs. Indiana Pacers - Game 1:
Awesome game, but I never thought the Celtics would defeat the Pacers today, especially not in their own court. It was definitely a surprise.
Dallas Mavericks vs. Portland Trailblazers - Game 1:
Dirk Nowitski kicked the Blazers' asses today, and if the Blazers don't find a way to shut Nowitski down.... they're going to lose this series.
Sacramento Kings vs. Utah Jazz - Game 1:
I wasn't surprised that the Kings won, but I think they better watch their backs. The Jazz ain't gonna back down, they're still very determined, and I think they're gonna step up their game.
Phoniex Suns vs. San Antonio Spurs - Game 2:
What a shock! I never thought the Suns would win even one game in this series, and I truly believed the Spurs would shut them out. It's not gonna happen now, though. I really underestimated the Suns.

Well, these first two games were a little on the boring side. Tracy McGrady kicked some major ass today, and the Pistons couldn't really keep him down.
And the Lakers, damn, the Lakers beat the hell outta of the Timberwolves. Kevin Garnett did all the work by himself, and it wasn't anything spectacular. In order for the Wolves to give the Lakers a run for their money, there really needs to be a team effort.
Alright, Sunday's playoff games are almost over, we just have one more game left.... Philedelphia 76ers vs. New Orleans Hornets. This one should be good, I have a strong feeling this series will go down to the wire....

Some very good games this weekend.
My favorite play of the weekend was the young Amare Stoudamire banking in the three with just seconds left to send the game into overtime. The best part was that he was 2 for 10 from 3 point range for the entire season!. What a shot. And then Marbury's 3 to win the game was classic.
I love this game!

I dont know, I am having a hard time seeing how George Karl should be considered such a great coach. He has had some very talented players the last 4 years in Milwaukee and really hasnt been able to do much. It also seems like most of the players on his teams dont have much respect for him.
I think the factor that solidifies my case against Karl is his performance in the World Games last year. He had far better talent on his team than any team they faced. Yet the US still had its worst ever finish in the games. He wasnt able to motivate or prepare his players. I could see them losing one game, and then that should be the wakeup call. But even after losing a game to an inferior opponent, Karl still was unable to get the team to play well. Maybe the players werent all on the same page, but thats the coaches job to fix.
Karl may have had some good days back in Seattle, but whatever skills he had, seem to be long behind him.

If the Suns were playing in the finals, they'd beat any team from the East. That's how weak the East is. The 8 seed from the West would beat the 1 seed from the East in 5 games.

I think the East has gotten way too much shit these past few months. The East hasn't been good as it was in the 90's, but there are some very entertaining Eastern players to watch, such as Allen Iverson, Tracy Mcgrady, and Ben Wallace. Once the Laker's glory days end after Shaq and Kobe are gone, then I'll think the East will start to shine again. As for the Lakers, I'll think they'll win a fourth straight title, but I'm not rooting for them. The NBA has gotten duller and duller ever since the Lakers starting winning titles again.

Hell, I'll tell you right now, the Lakers, Mavericks, Kings, or Spurs will be the team that represents the West in the finals. And any of these teams will leave the Eastern team in a bloody mess.

The Lakers should have played the way they were playing towards the end of the game, which was with a sense of urgency. They sure didn't play that way in the first and second quarters. Also, I think it killed the Lakers when Derek Fisher got fouled out of the game, he really did a lot for the team.
There's no denying it, though. The Timberwolves put on one hell of a show, Gernett and Hudson just wouldn't stop. I didn't think the Lakers did that good of a job of controlling the Wolves on the court.
Hell, did anyone see the refering in this game? Damn, it was fucking tragic! Personally, I thought it sucked for the Lakers, and I'll admit it, the Wolves as well. I'm telling you, these refs can downright suck in these games sometimes!
Anyway, this was a very thrilling, yet disappointing game. And I don't care about what Kenny Smith and Charles Barley said after the game, this game was important! Honestly, if you're in the playoffs, you should play every game like you're about to be eliminated!
Well, no doubt about, game four on Sunday is going to be very crucial for the Lakers. It's definitely a must-win situation.....

I heard on TNT last night that the Mavericks and Spurs are interested, so maybe Malone should head on over there. I think the Mavericks is the best choice, though. I don't think he's concerned about being overshadowed at this point in his career. He wants a ring, and the Lakers need a strong power forward, who doesn't feel like he has to score 30 a night. Malone would fit in well here. (God, it hurts to say that.)

LOL! Well, it's definitely going to be interesting to see how everything turns out. Oh, he'll contribute. The hardest part for him will be learning the triangle offense. But he's had alot of experience defending it, with the Lakers for four years and two years in the finals against the Bulls. I think he'd fit in great. He's still in unbelievable shape.

It just seems like the Mavs on paper have so much talent. Finley, Nash, Nowitzki are stars, and Van Exel and Lafraentz made the Allstar games a few times in their career. So will the Kings. And if the Lkaers can't do this year or next...Will Kobe be back. Doesn't sound like he loves the LA scene. I think he might bolt and head East to be closer to his family anf try to mend the proverbial broken fence with his dad. If he leaves, the Lakers will fall hard.
Like they will in this series with the Spurs.

The Spurs beat the Lakers, ok. George is injured, ok. But I wouldn't bury the Lakers just yet. I mean, sure, losing George is tough, but it's in times like this that teams live or die. It's now we see if the Lakers got what it takes...
Oh, and don't get me wrong -- I love the Spurs. Tony Parker (da Frenchman) is one of the reasons I do. I'd love them to get to the Finals and win the title. I just think it's not gonna be as easy as it seems it'll be.
About the Kings and the Mavs...I don't like Chris Webber all that much, so I'm kinda pissed Sacramento won. But it was fair, Dallas didn't deserve to win -- poor shooting average, poor defense...they got it all wrong in Game One. I hope they'll recover for Game Two and go on to win the series.
Pistons beat the Sixers...and I'm damn glad they did. The Pistons are a great solid, unselfish team, and they deserve to do something this year. As for the Sixers...Allen Iverson is the only worthy player on that team. Like him or not, he earns your respect -- he's a fighter. He's the only one I'll be sorry for when Detroit kicks Philly out of the playoffs.

"Defense" is a word neither of these teams understand. What was it? 124-113 or something. Dallas couldn't shoot, and still scored 113?
I'm not completely writing off the Lakers. We will now find out how good Phil Jackson really is.

I still think the Lakers are going to win the whole thing, as much as I hate to say it. They just seem to have a weird power in the playoffs. I think other teams are still intimidated by them, even if they wont admit it.
I wont believe the Lakers are done until they are officially eliminated. I am a pessimist. Even if they are down in a series 3-0, I think they can overcome the deficit. Damn Lakers.

argghhh!!! My Mavs got bloody spanked! I just hope we retaliate with vengeance and stomp those Kings....it should be relatively easy, if we just plug their inside...but we have no inside game, offensively or defensively. If we can't stop Webber, we're done.

Yep. Nobody will be able to say they took us out at full strength.
I understand Malone wants to take the mid-level exception and play with the Lakers next year. I hate Malone with every fiber, but if he can learn the triangle offense, he would be a great addition.

Why the hate for Sac-town. They helped make the West a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Hell. the Lkaers have handed them their ass the past...i don't know....20 years. Sac-town and Dallas make the West fun....now you have 6 teams who could beat the shit out of any team from the East.

They should have known there were changes to
be made. They barely won the division last year.
A couple of cases of being in the right place at the
right time helped them win.
Losing two role players should not make much of
a difference. if Phil Jackson would use more than
seven players they'd be in a better situation.
Shaq's great but he is a bully and it's good to see
the refs call him for what he's doing. Kobe's great
but he's not the greatest. Not yet. Bowen would
never have been able to do that to Jordan. Kobe's
still got work to do. If only he'd play for another time
like the rumor mill's been saying.
I'm glad the Laker's are losing. I just hope the
Spurs win it in LA on sunday with a sweep. That
would be heaven.
I still have to go with the Kings to take it all. It's
their turn.

I didn't like Iverson in the beginning, and I still have a lot of issues with the man's behavior and such, but he's earned my respect these past couple of years. Sure he eats up the ball, sure he's not much of a team player (but growing more and more as one), sure he's a big mouth, sure he's a pain in the ass the way he behaves, sure he looks like a friggin' rat. But look at the Sixers this year, look at them play the Pistons -- he's the damn heart and soul of that team. He's a fighter. He never goes down unless you knock him down. And if you knock him down, he'll just pick himself up and come back right at you. And I respect that.

As for the Laker win...it's a good win, a solid win, and it's a good thing they didn't lose their first home game of the series. I think they can come back from their 2-1 deficit, but still -- in Game Three, some of the key Spurs players were off. Take Tony Parker, he scored 2 points at 1-of-8 shooting. Can't agree with you there, Doc. Sure, Jackson had Jordan and Pippen, and Shaq and Kobe. But how many championships had ANY of them won before, or after Jackson?

Del Harris had almost essentially the same team as Jackson inherited, and was swept out of the playoffs two years running. Jackson took over and won in his first year.

Hell, the Lakers came back from nowhere, and that's something no one can deny. Anyway, the Lakers would have won that game, if it wasn't for that stupid ball that refused to go in at the last second! Robert Horry threw off a great shot, though. Oh well, it wasn't the Lakers night.
The Spurs still have lots to worry about, I think. The Lakers are going to go into Game 6 with a shitload of momentum, and I believe they will take the game. Charles Barkley is right, he is going to be working on Saturday, because there will be a Game 7. :D

That was a hell of a game last night. I was flipping back and forth from the Cubs game and playing some Nintendo (Zelda) and I almost turned the game of completely around the middle of the third quarter, but I had this sneaking suspicion that the Lakers were coming back. And they could have won if Horry hit that last second shot.
I am a fan of Shaq and Phil Jackson, but the more I watch Kobe play, the more I dislike him. I dont think he is the best player in the league, but I know that he thinks he is. He is so arrogant and selfish, he thinks he is the second coming of MJ, but the truth is that he is not even close. He needs Shaq, but he is too concieted to realize it. The reason they won those titles is because noone can guard Shaq. Whereas all it takes is Bruce Bowens (who?) to deny Kobe his last second heroic shot. The only way that the Lakers can win this series is for Kobe to acknowledge that the Laker offense runs best when Shaq is the focal point.
Kobe is begining to remind me of Jalen Rose. A guy who without a doubt has great talent (Kobe has more than Rose of course) but thinks that everything should just be handed to them. And like Rose, Kobe depends on the refs to bail him out far too often.

I thought I'd get this response. Just throwing out my opinion. By the way, you are not going to sway me. By the way, Kobe has improved under Jackson, but in this league it is not as much the product of the coach, but the desire of the player. And he become truly dominant in the lasy 3 years. I think the Spurs can win Game Six...if, as Popovich put it, they start scoring baskets and playing defense in the money time. Every game, they dominate all along, and they get butt fucked because they play like shit in the fourth quarter. They gotta do something about THAT -- Duncan especially, who played like a newbie in the fourth quarter of Game Five. Especially as the next game's in L.A. -- we can be pretty sure the Lakers are gonna get more trips to the foul line than the Spurs.
Still...the Lakers've came back from deficits all along the series, sometimes winning, sometimes losing. It's not gonna work for ever. Especially if George keeps screwing up and if Horry keeps on not hitting his three's (buzzer beater in G5 was pretty darn close, though).
I think the Spurs can close this one in six. If they don't, I think Game Seven is gonna be the best game in the year -- mark my words.

Im a die hard lakers fan and all i can say is they suck they played with no kinda intensity in the last quarter and thats why they got blown out. How do they expect to win with guys like ginnero pargo and slava medvedenko. Its time for the lakers to re tool and get better players around shaq and kobe. I hope dallas kills the spurs. we will be back next year to re claim our title. But untill next year go nets, next year will begin another three peat by the lakers

Well, the Lakers had a chance last night, but they just didn't have any kind of intensity of their faces. It seemed as if the Spurs wanted the victory more than the Lakers. I'm very disappointed that my team has been eliminated, but I'm very proud to be the die-hard Lakers fan that I am... you know, I'm happy my team made it to the playoffs, actually. It was a tough season for them, it really was.
Now that the Lakers are gone, the next team I'm rooting for is....
SACRAMENTO KINGS!!!!!!!!!!
Damn, I hope they beat the Mavericks in Game 7. I really don't want to see another basketball team from California to hit the grave....

Put the onus on the coach...don't forget about him. What the hell was Medvadenko (sp) and Pargos (sp) (two guys I've never heard of) doing in the game when they were down by 14 in the 4th. It's do or die, and Jackson went ahead and left them for dead.
Yeah they played with little heart, but when you have 2 or 3 stiffs on the floor in crunch time, what do you expect. There was no one on the floor for Kobe to play off of. I really feel that was Jacksons last game as the coach of the Lakers.
By the way...I have a huge smile on my face as I am writing this post.
Largest loss by a defending champion in an elimination game?
Do you know....of course you do!!
28 points by the 2002-2003 Lakers! :D

Jackson is known to make a point, even in big games. The regular cast of guys had played like shit. The ONLY Laker to show up ready to play was Shaq. And it's not Phil's last game coaching, he'll be back.
The Lakers sucked it up last night, no doubt. But they aren't done. But go ahead and let the rest of the league think so.
Strider, you CAN'T root for the Kings, no matter what.

Jackson did exactly what he had to do: he made a point. So ok, you've never heard of Medvedenko or Pargo -- it don't mean the guys can't play. Slava Medvedenko scored 12 points, grabbed 4 boards, and was solid on defense with a steal and a blocked shot in the last game -- and overall, he had a pretty serious semi-conference round, averaging 6.4 points and 3.0 rebounds a game in 13 minutes.
And c'mon, play off Kobe? Yesterday Kobe gave the worst playoff performance he gave in a while. Sure, he scored 20 points, but a) he's used to scoring 35, and b) guard opponent Tony Parker put in 27. He only took 2 rebounds. He had 4 personal fouls. He shot under 50 percent again. And c'mon, the man had 7 turnovers! SEVEN FRIGGIN' TURNOVERS! Out of a total of 13 for the whole team...seven turnovers, seven shots, considering those as all 2-point opportunites, that's at least 14 points wasted.
Jackson did what he had to do. He made a point, and confirmed that Shaquille O'Neal still is the leader of this Los Angeles Lakers team.
In a way I think losing will help the Lakers more than winning another championship -- would've made them overconfident. Keep Jackson -- he's the best coach around. Keep Shaq -- he's the most dominant player around. Keep Kobe -- he's the most dominant non-center around, and this loss will teach him a lesson and make him more mature and an even better player. As for the rest of the team...start rebuilding. Get a real point guard instead of cocky prick Derek Fisher who only hands out 3 assists a game (1.8 in the playoffs). Let Rick Fox go shoot a TV-show, because the man thinks he's a big-time star in Hollywood. Get a big third player to support the two leads -- Karl Malone is a free agent, Jermaine O'Neal is a free agent, Jason Kidd is a free agent. This is L.A., the money's there.
Rebuild.
Come back.
Conquer it all again.
It's doable.
As for this year...go Spurs!

Extremely well put, James. I agree with your entire post. EXCEPT the part about the money being there. There is a salary cap. But if we can get a decent point guard and Malone or O'Neal are willing to take the mid-level exception, we'll be fine.

Yes, I CAN!!!! :D
Honestly, I don't know why everyone hates the Kings. I feel so alone when it comes to actually LIKING the Kings. Who knows, I may be the only person outside of Sacramento that likes the Kings... :D
Well, I do hope the Kings win in Game 7. If not, I'll be rooting for the Spurs instead. Besides, I've been a fan of the Spurs for awhile, and I'm just not showing it too much because they just eliminated my team last night! :D

It's just unnatural to love the Lakers and not hate the Kings. I just hate almost all of their players (including Vlade) (but excluding Peja). They're a bunch of whining pussies. I hope the Spurs win, because then our loss won't feel so empty.

By the way, the SPurs have a lot of room under the cap to bring in a big time player. Jermaine O'neal in the same front court as Tim Duncan....That would scare the shit out of a lot teams Gar-run-teed!
About Jackson. Why make a point and give it up? Thay have some back before. The lead was only 12-14 points. It's not like it was impossible to come back. If I were a fan, I'd be pissed he threw in guys that aren't regulars, and don't have that kind of experience to win the game. Give those guys confidence by putting them in a winning situation.
Yeah, you guys have some room. Horry won't be back (5 mil) and Fox will only count half if he's out for the year. They will bring in a player make them much better. I think though they should try to get a middle aged player, not one that has 1 or 2 years left in the league...i.e. Malone, Pippen.

yeeeees! Dallas seals the deal by overpowering the Kings, and Van Exel lighting it up in the 4th quarter. I really do respect the Kings for putting up such a fight even without Webber, a stronger team then I gave them credit for.
Now for the Spurs. I think the Mavs will lose the first game due to nervousness or something of the sort. But they should get comfortable by game 3, and by then i expect them to have at least one blowout over the Spurs. The Spurs are a strong defensive team, but the Mavs are too much of an offensive juggernaut to be subdued.

I read where Juwan Howards agent thinks L.A. is the perfect spot for his client to land. That would be a tough lineup....Shaq and Howard down low...Kobe playing the 2 or 3....scary!
