View Full Version : Get ready for a new kind of tournament: The Ultimate Gay & Lesbian Film Tournament!

I wanted to have a tournament that two of my favorite films (Kissing Jessica Stein and Lost & Delirious) could be a part of. And then I came up with this idea. I think it's rather original if I do say so myself ;)... I wrote down all of the gay/lesbian films that I could think of, and then the rest I got from a little site I would like to thank --- www.wolfevideo.com --- who specialize in gay/lesbian entertainment.

It works just like my other tournaments. The first one to 10 votes wins, however, every vote is counted and if I get here and there's a tie of 10-10 or higher, we will have to wait until one of them gets another vote or so.

I hope that everyone will participate and help make this tournament a success!

Here's the list of films I've included:

Nominated for 4 Golden Globes® including Best Picture and Best Director!

Director David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks) brings to film one of the sexiest thriller of the year. Two beautiful women are caught up in a lethally twisted mystery – and ensnared in an equally dangerous web of erotic passion.

"There’s nothing like this baby anywhere! This sinful pleasure is a fresh triumph for Lynch, and one of the best films of the year. Visionary daring, swooning eroticism and colors that pop like a whore’s lip gloss!" – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"A maniacal thrill!" – The New York Times

Directed By: David Lynch
Starring: JUSTIN THOMAS, NAOMI WATTS, LAURA ELENA HARRING, ANN MILLER, DAN HEDAYA, ROBERT FORSTER
147 Minutes

CHASING AMY

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00003CX9D.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

When Holden meets Alyssa, the woman of his dreams... she has someone a little different in mind -- another woman! But together they share the kind of relationship they've been looking for all along... and soon they discover that the confusing ups and downs of love, sex and friendship in the '90s have never been so complicated... or so funny.

Directed By: Kevin Smith
Starring: Ben Affleck,, Jason Lee
105 Minutes
Rated R

I think CHASING AMY (8/10 or B+) is the best Kevin Smith film, along with CLERKS (8/10 or B+) of course... Yet I also liked MULHOLLAND DRIVE (7/10 or B-) and even though I gave CHASING AMY the higher rating, I'm not quite sure which one I want to vote for. It's kind of strange, because I gave MULHOLLAND DRIVE the lower rating, yet I'm sort of rooting for it. I think that's a sign that I should check it out again someday... So, I think I'm going to wait for awhile before I vote. I need to think about this one. I'll probably just end up giving my vote to whatever one is the underdog (if there's even going to be one).

Alright, LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

Thanks! I'm glad you like it...

I was debating over including THE RULES OF ATTRACTION for awhile, but then I decided not to since it's not technically a gay film. But now that I think about it, what the hell, it's gay enough ;)... I'll also add THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW and PHILADELPHIA... Wow, I just realised I never saw PHILADELPHIA, it actually sounds pretty good. Maybe I'll give it a rent. Anyway, I'm going to write your suggestions down, and I'll add them later, but first I'm waiting for any more suggestions people might have.

As for VELVET GOLDMINE being up against HEDWIG, well, the tournament just wouldn't be any fun if it didn't have some tough matches ;).

My thoughts exactly. Chasing Amy (10/10) is one of my favorite movies, but since MD (9/10) did have the better sex scenes (after all isn't that what we're really talking about here) and since damned martian asked me nicely I'll vote for:

MULHOLLAND DRIVE

ROUND 1 - MATCH 2

PINK FLAMINGOS

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/6304484054.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Pink Flamingos This is the movie that made John Waters famous, and quite possibly the film that made bad taste cool. Yes, Virginia, a large transvestite actually eats dog feces as a kind of dizzying denouement to this frequently illogical and intentionally disgusting movie, but by the time that happens, you're already numb... and you've possibly laughed to the point of losing bladder control. The plot revolves around two vile families laying claim to the title "The Filthiest People Alive." You've got pregnant women in pits, you've got grown men getting sexual satisfaction from chickens, you've got people licking furniture to perform trailer-park voodoo, and you've got classic lines like: "Oh my God! The couch... it... it rejected you!"
Waters, who went on to direct genuine pop-culture classics such as Hairspray and Serial Mom, made this celluloid sideshow with one aim--to make a name for himself. It worked. He does have a genuine eye for filmmaking (when the trailer burns down, you feel the white heat of Divine's pain and anger). On the other hand, you won't notice any disclaimers about stunt doubles and animals not being mistreated. There weren't, and they were. Welcome to the filthiest film in the world. --Grant Balfour

vs.

FEMALE TROUBLE

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005NC4X.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Female Trouble John Waters expands the definition of female trouble in this mutant tribute to good-girl-gone-bad drive-in melodramas. The girl is, of course, cross-dressing cult icon Divine, Waters's plus-sized muse. Divine is at her most gleefully outrageous as teenage brat Dawn Davenport, who runs away from home and into a life of wanton hedonism all because she didn't get cha-cha heels for Christmas. Almost immediately she's molested by a sleazy motorcycle thug (also played by Divine--is this Waters's idea of "love thyself"?), but she doesn't let motherhood interfere with her plans of stardom and turns herself into an unlikely fashion statement in an apocalyptic fashion show. Waters's fourth feature, a follow-up to the midnight movie hit Pink Flamingos, is just as cinematically primitive and even more gleefully vulgar, right down to the electric climax of Dawn's road to everlasting fame.

The movies of John Waters that I've seen I've really really enjoyed. For some reason I haven't seen these two yet. My video store doesn't have Female Trouble, but it does have Pink Flamingos (on VHS :(). Hmm, I'll have to give it a rent sometime, but I will make sure it's with a friend or two. Both movies sound really disgusting and distasteful, yet that's why I'm so interested, because I'm curious. I think curiousity is the main reason anyone would check these out.

I don't know which one to vote for yet, I want to see what everyone else thinks first.

CHUCK & BUCK

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000051S5M.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Buck (Michael White) is an unemployed, infantile 27-year old who becomes fixated on his childhood best friend, Chuck (Chris Weitz). Chuck, on the other hand, has moved on to living a successful adult life that includes a beautiful fiancée and a high-level job - and has no interest in rekindling this childhood friendship. Buck's obsession to re-friend Chuck motivates him to move to Los Angeles where he begins "stalking" Chuck and his fiancée. He calls continuously, hangs out in front of Chuck's office, appears at Chuck's home uninvited. With Chuck rejecting all these efforts, Buck takes "dramatic" measures and puts on a Children's Theatre play that he is certain will make Chuck become his best friend again. Finally, in great despair, Chuck finds a way to get Buck to leave him alone. . .

Directed By: Miguel Arteta
Starring: Mike White, Chris Weitz

It's nice to see you finally join in on the fun Ideal. I was thinking that maybe you didn't want to participate because this tournament was too controversial or something ;).

Anyway, according to Wolfe Video, BEST IN SHOW is a gay film. And I think it's gay enough, afterall, it does have like 4 gay characters. I wouldn't include movies like Big Daddy or Sweet November, because those gay characters didn't play a big enough part in either movie, but they do in BEST IN SHOW.

ROUND 1 - MATCH 4

I THINK I DO

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005KCB4.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Screwball comedy with a modern twist; instead of Kate Hepburn and Cary Grant, it's Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. Two college roommates (victims of a mutually unrequited love) meet up again five years after school at their housemate's wedding. With the introduction of a Bellamy-esque soap star, the sparks, sexual and verbal, start to fly, as the ex-roommates try to navigate their new romance.

Anyone who has ever attended a reunion with people you love but don't always get along with, or had second thoughts about a commitment, or still aches from a college snub or an unfulfilled romance, will immediately recognize the characters in this funny and moving film."- Frameline

vs.

THE EINSTEIN OF SEX

http://images.dvdempire.com/gen/movies/455007h.jpg

The life story of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, a German Jew, who as a physician established the field of sexology, and fought militantly against German anti-sodomy laws in the late 19th century. The script reveals main characters in Hirschfeld's life including impossible love interest Baron von Teschenberg, and Hirschfeld's aids- young Karl Giese and guardian angel, the transvestite Dorchen, as they establish the First Institute of Sexual Sciences in Berlin in 1920, and follows their struggles to keep it open, up to the rise of the Third Reich in the mid 1930s.

I haven't seen either of them, but if I had to choose one I'd definitely go with I THINK I DO. It actually looks kind of amusing. I don't want to see THE EINSTEIN OF SEX at all.

So, I THINK I DO gets my vote!

some trivia: the director Rosa von Praunheim is considered THE precursor of the gay and lesbian movement in 1960s and 70s Germany and kids actually have to see his stuff in school for their sociology classes. Having said that, I must admit that I've never seen one of his films... most of my teachers back in god ole Germany were simply too square. ;)

Simon Shore manages the transition from television and documentary to feature filmmaking with great assurance in his debut, the captivating, gay comedy/drama Get Real, based on Patrick Wilde's stage success, What's Wrong with Anger? Shore recounts an appealing tale of a teenaged schoolboy coming to grips with his emerging sexuality. Sixteen-year-old Steven is just another teenager: He listens to the latest music, plays computer games, hangs out with friends. But Steven has a secret: He's in love with the school's top athlete, the devastatingly handsome John Dixon. Not surprisingly, Dixon is dating a model and is the object of every girl's attention. Steven certainly can't tell his parents, and none of his friends know he's gay; he can only
confide in his best pal, the overweight, feisty Linda, who wants a
romance of her own. As if this weren't complicated enough,
Steven discovers that one of the girls at school has developed a
crush on him. And then Dixon notices Steven's attention. Shore
and his cast of youngsters do a wonderful job of capturing the
secret lives of his teenage characters. He penetrates the hearts
and minds of people trying to understand their complex sexual
yearnings, while compensating for the expectations of parents,
friends, and society. Fresh, youthful, and invigorating, Get Real
establishes its moving tone from the beginning and doesn't let go;
it takes an incisive voyage into the world of a gay teenager trying
to tell the world that there's nothing wrong with being in love.

Despite his youth of 16, Steven knows that he is gay and even experiments with sexuality at the local park men's room! Life changes for the soft-spoken teen when he locks eyes on John, the school's handsome super-jock.

The two are attracted to each other, but John's fears threaten to tear apart their tentative relationship. Get Real is a coming-of-age story infused with charm, humor, emotion and a knowing sense of the difficulties of being a gay teen. Highly recommended.

http://www.mckellen.com/images/lotr/hwpris1.jpg

The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert is proof that sometimes all you need for a good time is the right friends, the right music, and the right outfits! In an acting turn hailed by Rolling Stone as "one of the best perfromances of the year", Terence Stamp plays Bernadette, a drag queen about to relive her theatrical glory days with two young friends on one wild road trip. Billed for a gig in rural Alice Springs (smack in the middle of Australia), the trio hits the highway in a bus dubbed "Priscilla". Their act might fly in civilized Sydney, but the outrageous costumes, disco music and dancing is getting some pretty interesting feedback at every stop along the way. Bernie, Mitzi and Felicia are finding out that you can't shock anyone these days- but you can have fun trying!

Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

9/10

It's in my top 100 and it's abso-bloody-lutely GREAT.

Extremely funny, sad and unique. Pearce, Weaving, Hunter and Stamp (in particular) are all magnificent...and if this flick fails to lift your spirits on a mundane Sunday afternoon, then you have "issues" I'm afraid.

Just a few PRICELESS QUOTES...

A desert holiday, let's pack the drag away. You take the lunch and tea, I'll take the ecstasy. Fuck off you silly queer, I'm getting out of here. A desert holiday, hip hip hip hooray!

Why don't you light your tampon and blow your box apart, because it's likely the only bang you'll ever get, sweetheart!

Just what this country needs: a cock in a frock on a rock.

The exchange between Bernadette and Frank in the bar is definitely one of the more memorable scenes...

Bernadette: Stop flexing your muscles, you big pile of budgie turd. I'm sure your mates will be much more impressed if you just go back to the pub and fuck a couple of pigs on the bar.

Bob: Bernadette, please.

Frank: BERNADETTE? Well I'll be darned. The whole circus is in town. Well I suppose you wanna fuck too do you? Come on Bernadette, come and fuck me. That's it. Come on. Come and fuck me. Come on.

Bernadette: (Bernadette knees Frank in the bollocks) There, now you're fucked!

19-year old Jared Price leaves the stability of his home in Georgia to start a new life in Southern California. With little privacy and a prostitute for a roommate, Jared stumbles through the tight quarters of a Hollywood youth hostel. He befriends his young neighbor, Robert whom Jared quickly discovers is eager to pursue more than merely a platonic friendship.

Jared gains employment as a personal caretaker for Mrs. Haines, a wealthy, older, blind woman. He suddenly falls into a deceptive relationship with her affluent older son, Matthew. When the relationship becomes personally destructive, Jared is faced once again with the difficult decision to abandon his stability and risk his heart.

LILIES

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00001QGJ6.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Lilies, by John Greyson, is an emotionally intense, suspense-laden tale of love, betrayal and revenge in which one man's past comes back to haunt him. Already one of the largest and most successful gay art-house films of 1997, Lilies won four Canadian Genie Awards® (the equivalent to the Oscar®) in 1996 including Best Picture, and was placed on many year-end Top 10 lists including the Boston Globe, I.A. Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian and SF Weekly. In 1952, a Catholic Bishop makes an exceptional visit to a prison to hear a dying inmate's last confession. Once in the confessional, the Bishop is confronted by a childhood friend Simon, who has collaborated with his fellow inmates to take the Bishop hostage and reenact Simon's version of the events that took place forty years earlier in their rural village. The action moves back and forth, seamlessly through time, between the crude prison and the actual events of 1912, culminating in the tragic night when both men's fates were decided.

24 NIGHTS

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005OLBB.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Jonathan (Kevin Isola) is a romantic. He believes in Santa, even though it irritates his sister Marie (Aida Turturro, The Sopranos). Now in his early twenties and working in a New York gay bookstore, Jonathan thinks he's found his gift from Santa when he meets co-worker Toby (David Murtka). Toby's a cute Southerner and winner of the local "wet underwear" contest. But as the shopping days count down to Christmas, Jonathan discovers that Santa doesn't always deliver what sexy boys want, he delivers what they deserve.

"Precious. You can unwrap 24 Nights right now." - Lawrence Ferber, HX

Let me take a crack at it: You found out your boyfriend was really a girl just before you were about to have sex after renting Billy Elliot, and he/she was in love with someone else, so you broke up. Now you will never watch Billy Elliot and you have complete hatred towards it. :D;)

I actually don't think that you are either. I was just joking---using the words that you gave. "Girlfriend" wasn't one of those words, "girl" was, but not "girlfriend," so I had to use the word "boyfriend." I didn't mean anything by it.
