--Spoilers-- Planet of the Apes, what do you think?

I am not sure which one of these is correct, if either.

1. Either, in the movie, he started out moving into the past. And after he was stuck in the ship, Thade got out of his "cage" and re-took the planet. So then, when marky went back into the storm he ended up in the future where apes ruled once again.

Or

2. He started out in one alternate universe in which apes had gone medieval and stayed that way. Then when he went back into the storm he came out in ANOTHER universe and landed on a planet where apes had become the ruling power in the same manner as humans.

Which one do you think is more correct?

I honestly don't think there is a "correct" interpretation of this ending, as i think it provokes a personal response. There are the odd one or two clues, but they may be there to confuse people from a sure answer.
