Does anyone else out there hate the Evil Dead trilogy? I don't find them funny or scary at all and I know I can't be the only person who feels this way.

While I expected personal attacks for expressing my hatred of a MOVIE... I'd like to point out that my favorite movie is not Phenomenon. Nothing could convince me to watch that piece of celluloid garbage again.

I don't believe you! You have to have a better reason then that! :p
The Evil Dead is my favorite horror movie of all time. I know everyone has a different opinion, so how bout' it?

Hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I personally love the ED series.
But if you don't... more power to 'ya.

BTW, Lindsey... nice avatar. Any reason for that particular selection?

I don't know... It just seems so poorly written/directed/acted. I don't understand why it's so popular or why it's so cool to like it. I was just wondering if anyone else on the forum felt the same way.

Well, I'm glad to say that I've been in love with this series for well over a decade. Long before it became a cool movie thanks to the internet. (I know that doesn't apply to any schmoes out there though ;) ).
But you honestly didn't see any promise in what would've been a then college-aged Sam Raimi behind the lense in The Evil Dead?
If not, look again.

It's not a "zombie movie", it seems to me that everyone who seems to not like it doesn't "get it", saying that it's poorly directed is just stupid and the acting is supposed to be terrible and over the top (at least in the sequels!) you have your opinion and your entitled to it but I certainly don't agree...EVIL DEAD RULZ!!!

Saying Evil Dead is poorly directed is like saying Teenage Caveman was a masterpiece. Okay yeah the acting is bad and some of the dialogue is stupid and yes it's kinda slow but it's still a good movie. Not a rewatch movie though.

The first time I saw Evil Dead, I really disliked it. I thought it was over rated. However, a few months later I saw it for sale and decided to pick it up. It has become one of my favorite series, in particular the first movie, which I feel is by far the scariest entry in the series.
My advice is this. If you feel the series as a whole became too campy or humourus after the original Evil Dead, go back and watch it again. I did not find the original to be funny at all, just down and dirty scary and gory.
To each their own, though. My personal experience leads me to suggest an additional viewing of the original.

First off, I'd like to applaud DivideTheSky for putting his/her neck out there and expressing your beliefs in what is decidedly an ED-loving forum. Good on ya, mate.
Secondly, the reasons the first film looks so poor-quality are the reasons I love it. Sam Raimi took some of his friends, whatever film equipment he could afford to hire, a remote shooting location, an unfinished script and a shoe-string budget and made a stonking good horror film. Many people are blinded these days by CGI-FX (which are bloody expensive, take it from me) and big-name actors in the cast. You don't need that to make a good film, and Raimi proved that.
I love The Evil Dead for the same reason I love "Swingers" - one guy's vision, a lot of his friends helping him, and proof that any of us can make a good movie if we put our hearts and minds into it (and have taken the appropriate technical courses and know how....etc....I digress). A wise man once said that every person has a book in them, waiting to be written. The likes of Raimi and Jon Favreau have proven that everyone has a movie in them, waiting to be filmed (and distributed...and, hopefully, appreciated).

We have one rule on this board and that's you can debate and dissagree but we still have to respect each other while doing it.
Your sarcastic comment, half joke or not was out of school in light of the "debate". It was clearly a put down towards your fellow poster, it was uncalled for and that's not tolerated here. I hope this clarifies things and that it won't happen again.
NOTE: By the way his fav flick is not Phenomenon (with Travolta), its Phenomena (with an "A")...the Dario Argento flm.
Lets continue this thread on the right stab...

I find it very suprising that any fan of horror would not find this movie entertaining but everyone has an opinion and mine is that evil dead is one of the greatest break threw horror movie's to ever come out. Tapert,Rami, and Cambell you just can't beat that trio in my opinion.lata

I can't say I think The ED trilogy is poorly directed. Sam Raimi is a genius. Brilliant, brillaint director that can inject his flare and style into even pappiest movies. Plus hes a really funny guy. And the ED cmmentary tracks are the stuff of legend.

Personally, I love the original Evil Dead, but I don't care for the sequels too much. They're certainly creative, and aren't awful movies, but the problem? I didn't find them funny AT ALL! I know some people around here think that the sequels are the epitome of hilarity, but I just didn't find them funny. Ash's one liners didn't amuse me, they just had me rolling my eyes due to their lameness. But Bruce Campbell still rocks.
I can't wait to see the backlash I get from those comments!

As for the people insulting evil dead on some levels I do agree. Now the first time I saw the evil dead I got blown away by it. Now I find the movie to be boring and stupid. It's really not a rewatch movie. However the sequels are better because their actually made for more then one viewing. As for the person who said they didn't bother with the sequels because of the gore, the sequels have some gore but not as much as the original so check them out.
*Escapade*
04-26-2003, 03:34 PM
I'm not a fan of THE EVIL DEAD, and I despise it's sequels even more. It just wasn't my type of movie. I do think Sam Raimi did a great job of creating a claustrophobic film that gave a sense of hopelessness throughout. It truly was "grueling terror", but it just wasn't for me. I'm also not much of a gore fan, so that also knocked off points. It's not a BAD film, I just didn't really get into it. (I also had a childhood fear of the movie from my neighbor forcing me to watch it even though I'd cry when I was like 5.)

My sentiments exactly. I can stomach ED2, but the slapstick really weighs it down.

Agreed, ED 2 is my least favorite in the series for that and many other reasons. I liked Army of Darkness though but i don't really see it as much of a horror film but more of an action/adventure film with some cool and funny one-liners.

I have a feeling that if you were to read The Evil Dead Companion book you would understand and appreciate it to a certain degree. You can not expect everything to be professional because that takes money and not everyone has it.
I also think this should be in the Past Horror Movie forum and not general.

woohooo, the evil dead
the first ED film i saw was Army of Darkness, and ever since it has been one of my favourite horror films, and one of the funniest films i have seen
i then saw ED 1 and 2 after and loved them
i then watched 1 and 2 a number of months back and i didnt enjoy them as much
i appreciate both of them, find them funny and love the gore but i couldnt stand the actresses in either film, they were terrible but Bruce Campbell is great in them and Raimi is a great director so i cannot really fault them except for some bad acting

Dude...i respect your opinion and all but cmon. Evil Dead has paved the way for many of the movies that we all love to watch. Many aspiring directors looked to the evil dead saga for help. If you thinki that the acting is terrible and they arent scary, look at it as an inspiration for other new filmakers.

I'm guessing you're not familiar with the cult following of a 'B' movie, or movies, in this case. The ED Trilogy is a 'so bad it's good' thing, and that's what makes it funny, along with the slapstick and over-the-top gore. These movies are a landmark, and Bruce Campbell is probably the best B-movie actor in a long time. One for the history books, kids.
