I was speaking to a friend the other day who told me that after Gladiator took home Best Picture honours, he basically went to the store and bought the DVD, even though he's never seen the movie. I've only actually done this once, for The Abyss because I got a really good deal on it. I watched the movie once and never really got around to checking it out again.

Ever done this before? Was it a worthy purchase or basically 30 bucks down the toilet? Fill me in guys...

The first DVD was one I had never seen. I needed a region 1 disc to check out if my all-zone player was working properly and for some reaosn I chose The Thing, even though I had never seen it (I knew it was a great dvd though).

Luckily The Thing rocks and I am happy with my purchase.

I purchased THE CONTENDER on DVD without even seeing the movie first, but I knew it was going to be a good purchase because it had such a great cast, and was up for some awards, etc. In the end I was very pleased with my purchase. Besides I don't think DREAMWORKS has ever put out a bad DVD (Not like Fox, with that crappy transfer they did for PREDATOR!)

Yeah, I've bought a ton that I never seen, and some I have regreted with a passion.

Bringing out the Dead-Nic Cage and Scoresses I thought was going to rock, it's one of the worst I have ever seen. I've seen it once and that's it. Owned it since May

10 thing I hate about you- I thought it was pretty good. Julia Stiles is prett good.

Requiem for a dream- I heard good things, so I picked up a region 2 copy, was impressed.

I also bought meet the parents-I can't see how they can consider that a collectors edition.

More often than not. I love finding new movies. I haven't been burned yet.

Braveheart - Excellent
Carnival of Souls - Pretty good.
The Changeling - Excellent
Sleepy Hollow - Not my favorite, but I love the locations and images
Star Trek: First Contact - Love it
Star Trek: Insurrection - One of the weaker ST movies, but watchable
Taking of Pelham One Two Three - Have yet to watch it, pretty confident I'll like it
X-Men - Now anxiously awaiting the sequel. /ubb/smile.gif

Well you could always rent it, or you could just jump in a buy it, and if it sucks, you could always try to pawn it off on half.com or Ebay

Yep. I do it fairly often, but I won't do it unless I'm getting a really good deal on the dvd.

The Matrix. Under $20. Completely, absolutely worth it on all levels.

Hollow Man. Lousy movie, enjoyable only on a "oh-my-god-I-can't-believe-how-bad-this-is" level. However, I got it new for $14, and it was worth it to me for the documentaries on how they did the truly amazing effects.

Starship Troopers. $15. Totally worth it.

Unbearable Lightness of Being. $27. Totally worth it.

Hard Eight. Totally worth the $18 I spent as part of an online coupon deal. Excellent film. Excellent commentary.

Waking the Dead. This one also was worth it to me, although it was closer to $20. It came highly recommended by a friend. It's a really good film.

I know how you feel Bry Bry and Falcon, I too bought Hollowman on DVD not having seen it previously. The beginning of the movie is okay at best, the middle is ahh, but the ending...oh God it was a complete Abortion.

I also bought the Virgin Suicides just because I read great stuff on it. I plan to watch it this weekend.

Hey Bud, if you don't like Virgin Sucides I'll buy it off of you.

My roomate bought Hollow man also, with out viewing it first, I think he uses the disk as a coaster now

Falconfilms - yeah Waking the Dead is a great movie and DVD, have you checked out Keith Gordon's other work A Midnight Clear (1991) and The Chocolate War (1988)?

I try not to buy DVDs I haven't seen due to the huge risk, a couple:
The Cell (2000) great effects and features and it is a good disk, despite the average characters, I am satisfied with it.
My friend gave me Teaching Mrs. Tingle DVD after he watched it and didn't like it. It is my worst, I can't even give it away. I should probably use it as a coaster as well!

Haven't seen them yet, Green, but I'll check them out. Thanks.

i've actually made a new rule to NEVER again buy a dvd of a movie i haven't seen:

BAD UNSEEN CHOICES:

dinosaur 2disc: it was ok but $40?

sleepaway camp: big horror fan but this movie, not sure if it was worth the purchase.

clerks: uncensored: is it only me who found the cartoons incredibly stupid at time? though i haven't listened to the commentary yet and i'm sur it's gold.

Urban Legends 2: Final Cut: Whoo, bought the 2pak for the ok first movie, figuring the second would be passable. Nope!

GOOD UNSEEN CHOICES:

Cider House Rules: GOt it cheap and its worth it.

Conan the Barbarian SE: Great flick.

Nightmare Before Xmas: Knew I would like it. Definitely did!

Pitch Black: Knew I'd like it, definitely did!

The Sopranos 1st season: A no-brainer. Amazing!

Tarzan 2disc: F-ing amazing!!!

I was planning to buy Unbreakable sight unseen, but I'm not sure I will now that it's going to be an expensive 2CD set. Something about the movie interested me, even though I didn't like the Sixth Sense very much. This one I'll probably rent.

Pre-ordered "Crouching Tiger" through Amazon.
I figure how can it be bad? I love Kung Fu, and it was the most widely acclaimed film of 2000. I might still end up regreting it, but tha chances are a lot less than if I had order "Coyote Ugly" for example!

Unbreakable is pretty much going for the same price as a regular DVD 22.95 (That's the two disk set)

Sure. I've been trying to collect all of the movies on DVD that were chosen to be on the AFI 100 Greatest Movies of all time. I had not seen the majority of the movies on this list but felt it was a pretty safe bet buying a DVD for a movie that had been given the distinction of being one of the "100 Best". I have had two disappointing purchases (The Philadelphia Story and An American in Paris)...but many enjoyable surprises like, The Third Man, Annie Hall, All About Eve, The Manchurian Candidate, The Wild Bunch and many others which I had never seen before buying them on DVD.

Two positives in a row? I may just get Unbreakable after all.

The Philadelphia Story. I like it alright, mainly because of the stellar cast, but it's no Bringing Up Baby. Now that's a great movie.

Have I ever bought a DVD without ever seeing the movie first? hmm.......only if it is a movie that I can't go rent first or borrow from someone. I am huge Jackie Chan and Jet Li fan, so I have bought alot of their imported DVD's without seeing them. Actually, any Hong Kong DVD I buy is without seeing the movie first. But I have no other choice (since most people don't collect imports), except when it comes to Hollywood made stuff...i try before i buy.

I bought the first 3 ALIEN movies without even watching them first, and I don't regret it one bit! (Okay, they were on video, but it's the same idea!)
