Hey all,

I am a college student and am trying to collect some info from horror fans for a project that I am doing for a Popular Culture class. I am hoping to research some of the impressions that horror fans receive from viewing the different portrayals of women in horror films, whether she be the victim, the heroine, or even the monster. Recently I have posted a survey online, but I have not received enough surveys for my research to be accurate. If anyone is interested, could you please go to my webpage: http://hometown.aol.com/osie0882/myhomepage/index.html

All responses will be greatly appreciated!

Humans are lazy creatures by nature, you'll probably have better luck getting people to do the survey if you make it a purely html one where people can just answer write on the page and click submit. Best of luck with your paper though!

My email account has been acting really strangely lately..

here's the survey.

The Survey
Women in the Horror Genre

General Information

1. Age: 16

2. Gender: male..

3. Highest level of education completed: Grade 10.

Television

4. How many hours a day do you watch television (only include television shows, not movies that are shown on TV, except for movies that are made for TV)?

maybe an hour a day

5. Of these hours, how many would you say were spent viewing shows that are classified as mature content, meaning do these programs involve sexual content, violence, or adult situations?

Half, roughly..

6. List five shows that you view the most, meaning more often than other television shows that you may watch in order of most often watched (1 equaling most often and five equaling least often).

1. Jon Stewart Show
2. Sex And The City
3. Seinfeld
4. The Simpsons
5. Malcom In The Middle

Movies

7. How many movies would you say you see per month (this includes any movies you may have seen on TV, movies that you may have rented, gone to the theater to see, etc.)?

about fifty..

8. How many of these movies watched per month would you say were horror films?

all of them!

9. Do you enjoy watching horror films? Why or why not? If not, skip question 10.

I love them.. on Arrow In The Head, you're going to find a lot of people who see the genre as an underused and a VERRRY under-appreciated medium.. Plus, we all have verry loose morales (:D): seems that the genre can be used as a tool to sort of work in a lot of themes that aren't generally explored in others. ususally, these aren't the most wholesome topics, but all the same..

Its by far the most demanding genre for the audience.. at the start of a film, you must completely disregard any sort of moral propensity towards what's normal.. Keep in mind that killers can be heros..! ....Remember Cassius?

10. Would you consider yourself a fan of the horror genre?

yep!

11. Do you watch a variety of horror movies, or do you mainly watch one specific type, meaning do you watch mostly monster movies, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, or The Wolf Man, slasher films, such as the Halloween movies , the Scream trilogy, or the Friday 13th series, supernatural films, such as the Exorcist or the Amityville movies, or psychological, such as The Birds, Silence of the Lambs, or The Shining, or another type such as a zombie movie (for example Night of the Living Dead)?

I watch everything.. the Gaillo subgenre appeal to me the most.. its alot of fun...well, I think its actually cause I wanna be a jet-setter!

12. List in order the horror movies that you have viewed the most? Why?

1. Night Of The Living dead (68.): I've seen this flick more times than I can count.. with such a minimalistic approach to a monstrous theme, you're forced to look more at intra-human relations moreso than the obvious human/zombie conflicts. This is a THICK, existential horror, bordering the beginning of modern horror cinema as we know it. Mabye even the archetypal horror movie. you really NEED to see something like this over a hundred times to get a feel for it and its power over the rest of... the universe.

2. Rope: One of Hitchcok's "Lost" films(a LEGEND that you're just going to have to find out about on your own :)). Its story, techincal dynamic and BIZARRE history serves more than an engrossing whodunit.. This is by far the best representation of Hitch's work. based upon The Leopold and Loeb case of the nineteen twenties (admittedly, the case itself is a bit of an obsession of mine..).

3. Girly: good, clean fun from Britain.. Made in 1968 for Telvision by the Cinematogropher of some of great horror pictures.. its more for sentimental reason than anything

13. List in order your favorite horror movies? Why?

1 Night Of THe Living Dead (68),, see above.. :)

2. Rope.. probably my favorite of the movies based upon Leopold and Loeb's case (others are Welles' Compulsion and Tom Kalin's Swoon), with a great performance by Jimmy Stewart.. Definitely my favorite hitchcock film, along with a few others which used the famous 10 cut, real-time approach to his mysteries..

3. The Wicker Man. Difficult to define.. Horror, mystery, Musical? Therein lies its charm.. a Great story, with one of Christopher Lee's most memorable roles.

14. Do you prefer to view a horror movie that was made in the 30’s to 50’s decades, such as Frankenstein or Dracula to a horror movie made in the 60’s to 70’s decades, such as Night of the Living Dead, The Omen, Rosemary’s Baby, etc., or would you prefer to watch a horror movie made in the 80’s to present day, such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream, or The Ring? Why?

Horror went through many different periods since its birth.. Throughout the 60's and 70's, the genre started to branch off into VERY discernable paths, seperating the dry mystery, to the cannibal Mondo movie.. This is definitely the most fascinating period to brush up on.

15. A. While watching your favorite horror movies, do you ever feel uncomfortable with the amount of terror, death, or violence that is depicted within them?
B. If so, are these depictions concerning mostly violence against women?
C. Does it make you more uncomfortable to watch violence involving women, rather than men? Explain.

A. I'm pretty much immune to the gore.. there are, however, film which build enough suspense that a paper cut can muster up a dry heave in me..

B. NEVER. Violence in animals and Children are seen as the last straw to sicken an audience. Generally, these are the ones which hit the closest to home..

C. Never.. again, I'm immune to anything like that.. it really depends upon the character itself

16.A. Would you rather watch a horror film that involves a male or female heroine? Why?

I'm undecided, actually.. seems we've gotten to a point where there's a surplus of female heroines in the genre.. I'd like to see more teens playing a strong role, more than anything.

17. Do you appreciate watching a horror film that involves a strong female character, such as Scream, Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, or Resident Evil? Or, would you prefer to watch a horror film that involves a female character in distress, such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, or Last House on the Left? Explain.

Of course I can appreciate a female heroine...! For a while, it became a badge to the filmmakers who tried and rework the role of the female in the genre. Especially in the sixties, with the nascent female rights movement.. Quite a few feminist horror films came out of that period and they were nothing but TOTALLY engaging.

....see Season of The Witch.. You'll enjoy it.

18. Finally, would you briefly state the way that male and female characters are represented in the horror films that you have viewed the most, as answered in questions 12 and 13. Do you think that the gender roles have anything to do with your preference in question 14?

Rope showcases the female lead as an ignorant sow.. that has more to do with the case which the film is based on than anything.

Girly is all about the heroine taking charge of an...unsatisfactory living situation. Nothing less than life affirming!

NOTLD.. there's a tough call.. In short, the females represented were used to portray the verry typical female roles/beliefs in America at the time.. Keep in mind that within that demographic, there were polar extremes.. so there's a mix, I guess,.

19. Are there any other comments you would like to make concerning this topic?

YES. Keep in mind that, since the early nineteen eighties, teenage males are the biggest film-goers.. I'm actually ashamed to see the more unsavoury marketing tactics taking over the mainstream horror circuit..

Flaubert once compared his art to a verry sexual woman who had been murdered.."legs spread, with a cigar doused in her ankle." I'm paraphrasing, of course.. Lucio
Fulci will only kill a woman in the most brutal fashion.. Call that degrading to an entire sex, but alot of these fingerpointers sometimes fail to realize that its more of an homage to the verry old theme of having to suffer in order to fully realize the artist's vision. this is horror. Again, you must deal with a very twisted sense of reality in order to appreciate it.. There's nothing more devastating than seeing an attractive person getting murdered.

*Thank you for your interest and your time!

The pleasure is ALL mine, I assure you. :) If you're at all interested in this subject, you should check out Romero's Season Of The Witch. You'll enjoy it,.

Definetly without a shadow of a doubt.Horror films are one of the top genres for me,i just grew up around them, and was raised watching them often. They grew on me,as did movies in general, but since i was raised with the horror genre,i have a large spot in my heart for them...i love the aspect of getting scared, seeing deaths, and being taken into another world, where you believe.

See my previous answer,if you dont see it,then i'll say it again, yes.

11. A realist female character is best, but if i have to choose,it would be a strong female character.

Gotta agree with bloodfeaster here, I'm not letting someone I don't know have my e-mail address. An html survey would be much better.
