View Full Version : 2002: Box-Office Disappointments
Now 2002 is oficcialy over and no major changes could occur over its box-office charts, I wonder what you guys thought about last year (in B.O terms).. What movies grossed way too much than what they deserves.. what are the missed hits and what are the movies that could’ve done better?
Too much:
Men In Black 2
Die Another Day
The Santa Clause 2
XXX
The Bourne Identity
Blade 2
Snow Dogs
John Q
Like Mike
Master of Disguise
Flops that should’ve been hits:
Solaris
Frailty
Eight Legged Freaks
Hart’s War
Treasure Planet
Windtalkera
Not flops… but could’ve done better:
Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Stuart Little 2
About A Boy
Resident Evil
Red Dragon
Unfaithful

Pluto Nash only made 2.2 million on a 100 million budget. That could have done a lot better.

For the life of me, I can't fathom why *anyone* saw this movie.
Sadly, Master of Disguise is a hit! It managed to make a healthy $40 million while its budget was in the lows of $16 million..

I know, it blows my mind. Was the "turtle! turtle" line in the trailer really that enticing? Alluring? Intriguing?

I think it was one of the major flops of the year, according to how much made the first movie.

I agree, it was a major flop. And it didn't even make back a lot of it's money on VHS/DVD! But a lot of people in my theater kept seeing it i guess because it was playing till September!

Spy Kids 2 did very well considering it only cost a little over $30 million. Spirit could have done better if it didn't bore everyone. Stuart Little 2 bombed at theater. About a Boy, I'm sure was a cheap flick to make. Resident Evil deserved to make less than what it actually made. Red Dragon was a pointless remake. Unfaithful did pretty decent considering it has two stars that are not really box-office proof.
Hart's War made exactly what it deserved for such a boring ass suckfest. Sci-Fi related animated flicks like Treasure Planet have yet to make a name for themselves. Windtalkers was just more of the same old war shit that we always see.
Men in Black 2 made more than it should have, but it still was not a hit after all the stars and producers get their cut of the back end. Die Another Day did well because it was a lot of fun and Halle Berry has a nice pair of tig ol' bitties. Santa Clause 2 just took advantage of the fact that there are no other family movies out at the time. XXX was riding Fast and the Furious footsteps. Bourne Identity only made double of what it cost back. And Blade 2 definitely did not make too much money. It cost about $50M and made close to $100M. In fact, it deserved to make more money because it fucking ROCKED!!!!!! MAH!

Frailty was a great film, and too bad it didn't do well in theatres.

Ahhh!!! You wrote exactly what I was gonna say just before I had a chance to post it!
But yes, I agree that Frailty must be the most overlooked film of 2002. It's Bill Paxton's best work as an actor, and the Academy Award people probably didn't even watch it!

Definitely agree on Frailty. Bill Paxton did phenomenally well with this film, it's a shame it wasn't recognised enough. It had the kind of ingredients that worked well for Box Office friendlies like The Sixth Sense or What Lies Beneath. Matthew McConaughey was also amazing in the film with his performance.

Star Trek:Nemesis was a flop and the lowest grossing film of the star trek movies. It deserved to make SO much more.

I agree, it should've made a lot more. It looks 10 times better than that joke of a movie Maid in Manhattan (a.k.a uninspired rehash of Pretty Woman).
