I've noticed many point out that some sequences in films would work nicely as self contained short films.
Such as the respective beginnings of:

Dracula
Horror of Dracula
Jaws
Saving Private Ryan
Goldfinger
Octopussy
The final third of 2001: A Space Odyssey may also work in the same manner.
