What rating (based on JoBlo's scale) would you give to Clint Eastwood's critically-acclaimed film about redemption, Unforgiven, co-starring Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, and Richard Harris?
Personally, I'd give it a 9/10. It has a few flaws, but they are tiny, and it is one of Clint's better works. The supporting cast is excellent, by the way, especially Freeman.

Easy 9.5/10.
Clint Eastwood is probably the undisputed GOD of Westerns, IMHO. Sorry, John Wayne fans, but while the Duke rocked, he also didn't have half the BADASS factor that Eastwood has.
Clint Eastwood bringing death to the craptacular town of Big Whiskey is quite possibly the greatest western ever made.

I've recently cut down on my number of 10/10's, trying to only give truly perfect movies that rating, so this would be a 9/10, but it's one of the best Westerns ever made, a truly awesome, nearly-perfect film.

10/10. Fantastic movie, one of the greatest westerns of all time, hands down.

9/10
"All right now, I'm comin' out. Any man I see out there, I'm gonna shoot him. Any sumbitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife. All his friends. Burn his damn house down."
The last 10 minutes of the film are possibly the most memorable 10 minutes in the entire Western genre

I'd give it a 7/10. It's a good movie but I felt it lagged on at times and lost my interest. I'm also not a real big fan of Westerns. Still, Unforgiven is one of the better ones I've seen.

UNFORGIVEN
Starring: Clint Eastwood (William Munny), Gene Hackman (Little Bill Daggett), Morgan Freeman (Ned Logan), Jaimz Woolvett (Scholfield Kid), Richard Harris (English Bob), Saul Rubinek (W.W. Beauchamp), Frances Fisher (Strawberry Alice)
I'm bumping this topic back up because I just saw this.......for the first time  . Western is not my favorite genre by any means, but this film impressed me; it has it's flaws and sometimes drags on quite a bit but overall due to the amazing storytelling, directing (Eastwood is a GOD), acting (everyone is pitch perfect here, Gene Hackman is especially menacing and cruel as Little Bill, his best performance IMO), and the way it pays homage to greater Westerns of the earlier decade, it's a brilliantly made, nearly flawless picture. 9/10

Unforgiven (8/10)
A somewhat disappointing film. A few flaws here and there that sometimes turned me off, but that's all the complaints I have. Eastwood, Freeman, Hackman, and Harris (some of my favourite actors), all give brilliant performances. It's a deep film, with a mature subject. I thought it was excellent.

I honestly don't see the flaws that some schmoes have mentioned. Alongside The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (10/10) and Dirty Harry (10/10) it's the best Clint Eastwood movie. The acting is, across the board, pitch perfect. The pacing of the movie is perfect. The direction is perfect. The score is perfect. The movie is perfection. 10/10

at times brooding...at times thoughful.....at times vicious and nihilistic
it is very rare that a genre is restored and improved upon in this way#

im sorry to go off topic here... but it says DH is a Former Schmoe? Thats crazy... wasnt he one of the big guns around here? If anyone can PM and fill me in, id be very appreciative!
On Topic: Unforgiven was a good flick....but not eastwoods best work. Even though thats the one he took home the oscars. Cant wait to see Mystic River... eastwood has a gift in that directors chair!

10/10 A masterpiece! And one of the best films of the 90's! It's also Eastwood's best.

10/10
My all-time favorite Western. The acting was powerful, the story packed a punch, the directing was tight, and the film flat out looked great. A classic film if there ever was one.

In the film, The west is really just a setting, the film itself is all about anti-violence (an anti-western, really). A Theme handled beautifully by Eastwood. He doesn't portray violence in a glamorous way, but rather a terrifying way. The message he gets across is actually quite similar. It's a message that we've all heard a million times in our lives, but what Eastwood does is give brutal examples of the horrific nature and the guilt that plagues us all after committing a violent act. Which brings to mind my favorite scene- the Kid sitting up against a tree, bottle of whiskey in hand, expressing his guilt to a seemingly disinterested William Munny.
There are many memorable aspects, from the direction, to the cinematography, to the score, but it's the acting that shines brightest:
Eastwood's performance as William Munny is touching in certain areas, and frightening in others. His Munny is right on par with his Man With No Name, Josey Wales and Dirty Harry performances, imo.
Hackman's portrayal of Bill Daggot is among the most terrifying, assured work of his career. Among the greatest villainous performances ever (if Daggot can be considered a "villain". that is).
Freeman gives a brilliant, quiet and subtle performance as Ned Logan. Fisher's passionate as Alice. Harris, as English Bob, is extraordinary in the short amount of time he's onscreen.
As I stated in another thread, all of the values and lessons espoused in your archetypal Western are torn apart in the film.
