View Full Version : "a nightmare on elm street 2: freddy's revenge"

watched it yesterday. some thoughts after viewing:
1) junkyard dogs with baby faces = creepy.
2) look, you can just insinuate that some old dude's bare ass is getting smacked raw by a towel - you don't have to SHOW me, ok?
3) kim myers looks kinda like a young meryl streep.
4) when a franchise starts having major mythology continuity errors in the second entry, it's in trouble.

what do you guys think about this sequel?

Well it was a bit too homo-erotic for my taste, but it was still dark and gritty, which is how it should be with all of the NOEM movies. Freddy killed small children, I don't think he was a cheerful wiscracker, like that cheerful wisecracking uncle that everyone has. He's a sick mother, that's all.

This movie gets shat on quite a bit, but frankly, I think it's one of the better "Elm Street" sequels, even if it doesn't conform, through no fault of its own, the rules that are established in the later movies. Other than that, Gretch, I agree with 1 - 3 of your observations, particularly 2 & 3. And in reference to Ominous Oat's comment about the movie homoerotic undertones, it seems to me that NOES 2 can be read subtextually as the suburban dread of homosexuality.

Oh the scary scenes:

1. jessie dancing
2. Jessie at a gay bar
3. Jessie trying to make out with a time traveled Maryl Streep

Aside from that, Clu Gulager saved the parts he was in, but good lord did they HAVE to have Freddy manifest himself in someone else and not follow the patten of the last entry?

Did I forget the exploding bird. or the deadly high temperature sequences?

Sure Im being harsh, but, in the words of Boz Scaggs, what can I say?

I liked this movie as "the best of the bunch" as a kid. It was my fav. 'cause it scared me the most. The part where he first meets Freddy is still a bit creepy these days if you ask me?! Yeah, and I don't get the rising heat thing either... but to tell the truth, the 1rst rocked this one!

never did i expect to see the words "Boz Scaggs" in the horror forum...let alone at joblo....i just listened to "lowdown" not too long ago.

not that bad of a film, some scenes just hint at the homo erotic type too much for me,but it was good, because of how serious it was taken atleast compared to later sequels.robert rusler was the best thing going for the film besides freddy of course.

The only reason to see this film is Freddy, he is so fucking cool!!

i honestly didn't think it was a bad movie. it had some great gore and some decent scares. but, like Lady Summerisle, i just don't like freddy possessing someone. i mean, if he could do that, why didn't he do it in the first movie? why all the fuss about having to "physically" drag him out of dreams and into the real world if he could do it himself? but, props to freddy for still being scary.

this is not the worst movie in the series, in my opinion that belongs to freddys dead...but this is definately the movie in the series that marches to its own drummer....but hey, on the bright side its a sequel about freddy, and not about a glove factory that will make everybodies hands explode on halloween;)

it has got homo undertones but I think it's one of the best if not THE best sequel, keeping to the original's dark roots, loved the bus scenes and the pool party scene

I like this movie. There. I said it. God help me, but...

NOES 2 was much stronger on character developement than any of the other imo, and it is the second best sequel in the series. One ca not really ignore the homo erotic undertones, because that is basically what this movie is about. The dude has a battle going on inside himself(straight or gay? good or evil??) and I think a lot of the homoeroic undertones atte,pt to be a metaphor for this. Plus its got that cool swimming party scene and is responsible for my favorite Freddy line, "You are all my children now!!"

8/10.
God help me.

Oops, my bad.

NOES 2 has very effective scenes, and the twist about Nancy's diary strikes a chord with horror fans. I shouldn't be harsh to it.

But there are too many logistic problems to be ignored.

I Love A Noes pt 2. Sure it has it "issues" Like the NO chicks sign up on Jessies door and the fact that he scream like a 5 year old girl but the movie is just fun times. That whole pool Bbq slaughter scene is priceless and a highlight in the Noes saga. Sure it doesn't follow the rules but The rules had not yet been set. People seem to forget that it was only number 2 and no set formula was set in stone. Part 3 Did that :)

I would rank this as third best in the series, after New Nightmare and the original one.

NOES 2 is a good film and strong sequel and I give it 8/10. The worst in the series is a tie between The Dream Child (part 5) and Freddy's dead the 6th one.

The first, New Nightmare and part 3 are the best in the series in my opinion

Being an Elm Street series fan myself, I like this movie although is does lack some of the elements that make the series great.

It had some classic Freddy moments. "You are all my children now." and Freddy jumping through the glass and disappearing were both pretty cool.

I don't hate this movie, but they could have skipped ahead to part 3, and it wouldn't have hurt things in my opinion.

Sure this could be the worst of the series, but that like pointing out the nerdiest kid at the sci-fi convention.

hey,

as a fan of horror movies, i have to say i liked this one. Iremember sitting in the thatre as a kid watching freddy go "YOU GOT THE BODY, AND I GOT THE BRAINS" and ripping the top of his head off to reveal a brain while jesse screams like a poonanny

I think this is one of the better Elm Street sequels, it's a lot darker than parts 4 and up. Freddy is great in it.

This sequel always tends to get a bashing, but it's not that bad really. Admittedly it's not the best sequel, and it does suffer from the fact that after NOES caught New Line off guard by becoming a surprise hit they turned this around in next to no time. However, as stated before, it has got some pretty good characterisation (if not dancing!), and Freddy is actually scary in some scenes.

OK, yeah it is a little homoerotic, but so what - it doesn't intrude too much on the story.

The thing that does bug me about this movie though is Freddy being overcome by 'love' at the end. The idea is (marginally) sound, but the execution just doesn't work for me!

Overall though, I'd give it a good 6 out of 10.

Doesn't get the reputation as 1,3,4 but it should be up there as "above average". It was watchable...definitly better than 5 and 6...4th or 5th best in series out of 7.

I agree with Horror Freak that the two worst sequels are 5 and 6 and that the first, 3, and new nightmare are the best. I didn't think part 2 was that bad. It was pretty dark. The first three are great because it is pre-comedic freddy.

I think this movie completely rocks, and the gay overtones just make it more fun (the dance scene and the S&M bar scene are pure quality). ROBERT RUSLER kicks ass as RON GRADY. It was such a refreshing change for the geek (JESSE - obviously) to actually make friends with one of the cool kids, even after they initially had a fall out!! And RUSLER had some great lines:

1. (talking to JESSE about LISA) " So are you mounting her nightly or what?!"

2. (when asked if he's going to the party he replies that he's grounded) " I threw my Grandmother down a flight of stairs!"

3. JESSE - " Something's trying to get inside me!"
GRADY - " Yeah she's a hot red head waiting in the cabanna. And you wanna sleep with me!!!"

Classic.

I personaly didn't notice any gay tones throught out the whole movie untill I came on this board and read some reviews and then ya I noticed it. But I love this movie as I feel Freddy is at his peak here. My favourite Nightmare sequal

All I know is that my mother of all people noticed the gay tones in this movie before I ever did. I wasn't looking for them, since it was a Nightmare movie, all I was looking forward to was some good horror like always. But my mom walks by the tv during the gym teacher kill scene and says and I quote "Does Freddy wanna take that guy up the ass?" Needless to say that kinda ruined the movie for me. But hey, like most villanous movie monsters, and college students, maybe Freddy was struggling with his sexuality at the time and wanted to experiment. Course after that he went back to the child killing, so i'm sure it was just a phase. Least he didn't do cocaine off some guys chest or something. Anyway, thats my opinion. However crude it may be. lol

the night watchman
06-27-2003, 11:15 AM
Ummm... I think the gay overtones in this movie can be regarded symbolically or metaphorically, not literally. I don't think Freddy was struggling with his sexuality. Jesse may have been, and Freddy was the representation of the fear of being different or potentially cast out by his friends and family. That fear became a destructive force (Freddy), and Jesse's denile of himself alienated him from friends and family anyway.
