The once original opening to Scream is still good. I don't know what I would consider the best, though.

Reservoir Dogs- We are introduced to all the film's main characters in the first scene and we learn a little about each one of them.
Goodfellas- Eventhough it's a scene that occurs later in the movie, it was placed perfectly in the first scene. Tommy, Henry, and Jimmy are driving when they hear Batts moving around in the trunk. They get out and...well you know the rest.

...The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The epic shots of the mountains, playing one of the best scenes from the first film again, the awesome fight on the way down, and one of my favorite shots in cinema - Gandalf and the Balrog, shown falling from afar. Also, the first film, The Fellowship of the Ring; excellent opening. The entire prolouge was awesome, from start to finish. And lets not forget Jaws - another excellent opening sequence.

The Ring: Not very original, but suspenseful.
Scary Movie: Hilarious opening.

Pulp Fiction: I loved the rapid, fast-paced delivery of the dialogue between Honey Bunney and Pumpkin, as well as the final coda:
Honey Bunny: I love you, Pumpkin.
Pumpkin: I love you, Honey Bunny. (jumps up) Everybody stay cool, this is a robbery!
Honey Bunny: Any of you fuckin' pricks MOVE, I'm gonna execute every motherfuckin' last one of ya!
Boom. Cue "Miserlou" and off we go...
I was so stunned upon seeing the film for the first time, all I could say was "Wow." It sets the style for the remainder of the film.

In recent memory, The Rules of Attraction had the best opening. It was very disturbing and it set the pace for the film very nicely. I also like the creative cinematography.

THE HOURS - both the pre-title sequence of Virginia committing suicide with the farewell letter to her husband heard in voiceover, and after it the montage of the three main characters getting out of bed and preparing for their day. Great editing, wonderful music, so simple and yet so affecting.

OK, my favorite is from Big Trouble in Little China. When Jack Burton is tallking to anybody on his CB about anything. The way that Russell delivers his lines are just hilarious.
"It's like I told my last wife, I says honey, I never drive faster than I can see and besides that, it's all in the reflexes."
Fucking brilliant!

The greatest opening scene, if not one of the greatest scenes in general, and I think Quent will agree with me here, Raging Bull.

NOBODY has said Saving Private Ryan??? The whole first 20 minutes are the best part of the movie!
Second would be The Godfather.

I loved the reversed shot of Leonard holding the polaroid photo, shaking it once in a while as the picture slowly goes back out of focus. Very cool.

Another great opening shot I forgot to mention: Snake Eyes.
It's filmed entirely (I may be wrong) in one take, as far as I can tell, for nearly 15 minutes, as the camera swoops all throughout the arena while following Ricky Santoro (Nicolas Cage). It's an astonishing technical achievement for Brian De Palma, even though the film itself winds up being pretty mediocre.

Honestly, I was blown completely away by the opening scene of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring". The way the film explains the legacy of "the one ring" and the narrative from Cate Blanchett is just pure brilliance.

Well, in a world of great opening scenes, there is no question that Private Ryan is the most intense, beautifully shot sequences in movie history.
However here are some of my personal favorites:
Steadicam shot that opens Halloween, set the modern day precedent of overdone steadicam shots.
The opening ten minutes of both LOTR: FOTR & TTT
The sheer joy & awe inspiring-ness of the opening of the Star Wars Universe, Opening credits to the launch of the escape pod
The beginning of Raiders, that whole golden monkey head scene with Alfred Molina dicking over Mr. Jones only to get squashed by the booby traps. Who can forget that big Rolling Stone?
The backstory of the Tenenbaum clan that opens The Royal Tenenbaums to the strings of Hey Jude -- classic!
Same can be said about a one Max Fischwer and his extra caricular activity montage in Rushmore.
Moulin Rouge first fifteen minutes kind of Rocks.
And like previous posts indicated: Rules of Attraction, Ghost World opening credits with Thora Birch groovin, Snatch character intro all get good grades as well

Has to be Lord of the Rings, that battle scene was awesome.
Now thats what I call a battle. How they made the time to dress those 3,678,001 extras all up as orcs I'll never know
