I'm glad ya asked.:D This is the best movie I have ever seen. It involves a twelve man crew in antartica who are attacked by a norweigan man chasing after a dog. The norweigan man is killed and the dog is saved. One night, when the dog is placed in a kennel it mutates into a monster and attacks the other dogs until it's discovered by the crew and killed. The crew decides to do some research and discover that the neighboring camp site has been destroyed with all of it's crew there dead. They also discover that the other crew found an alien creature that can imitate it's foes which leaves one burning question: who's human and who isn't? Paranoia sweeps in as the crew can't trust each other. It gets worse when it's dicsovered that if it escapes antartica it could spell the end for all life on earth. A 1982 horror/sci-fi directed by John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape From New York) that stared Kurt Russell, Keith David and Wilford Brimley with excellent Special FX by Rob Bottin. An excellent movie with awesome special effects, great suppense, wonderful chemistry (although their characters hate and can't trust each other) engaging performances and an airtight script that will you guessing as much as the humans onscreen. Do I still need to convince you? GO OUT AND GET THIS MOVIE NOW! (sorry for the caps). And make sure to get the DVD. It's packed with extras.

What extras does the DVD have? I dont own this, and am planning on buying top favorites only on DVD, instead of the rest for my beloved VHS :) This was one I was planning on for DVD.

ya know, it's kinda odd since it's very rare that a movie that flopped at the box-office will get many extras by a movie studio.

I have watched it 2 times and enjoyed it in both sittings. They were about 3 years apart which was good because i forgot who was infected and it was a mystery again. One of the best horror films i have seen.

Agreed! The Thing rocks. And yes, I was pretty surprised at all the extras. Do you know anything about the general price?

I think it was 30$ in Canada but in the U.S. it's probably around 27 or 25$.

I always see The Thing DVD in retail stores for $14.99. Regretfully, I still haven't picked it up. Great film. Better than both The Fog and Halloween, in my eyes.

I love The Thing too. It has couple of boo-scares that make you jump even after 3rd, 4th viewings (and for me that is really rear).....I hope the following doesn`t spoil anything, but I mean the heart attack scene.
That`s one awsome atmospheric horror movie. All the time it`s dark and serious, but sometimes it`s quite funny too (the head with spider-legs) Going to get it on DVD someday deffinetly.

I own the collector edition and again it is my favorite film from Carpenter.
I like the characters,too especially Macready ( Russel )
Rob Bottin really looks cool with his long hair and he does not even long old.

Oh yeah, well here's my supportive evidence! It's very often that people will set up a post like this to see how the schmoes feel about the movie and basically test the waters. So it's logical to assume that they haven't seen said movie. I am the greatest!:D

ahh but you are just assuming that was his intention...when it could have just been a general intention to start a general topic on the thing.
well whatever, its not worth drawing battle lines over ;)

Yeah, you're right quoth_the_raven. I think we should let this one slide. Oh, and Jason Vorhees have you got the movie yet? Did I mention that the movie has a mesmerising score by Ennio Morricone and the best ending I've ever seen!? Not to mention that the movie has a hidden easter egg?

It's simple really. All you need to do is go to Bonus Materials then go to the Terror Takes Shape documentary after that you go Languages then select music score and you will be able to hear the entire isolated music score on the documentary.
