Not counting festivals, my first was Bob Dylan at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre -- which is a fairly dodgy venue, right next to a train line and very ugly -- sometime in 1999, or it might have been 2000 even... my last was on the 22cnd of March of thise year seeing the very fine Mr. Beck Hansen, at the Horden Pavillion in Sydney -- Bruce Springsteen was playing right next door and we could here him as we made our exit dash to catch the midnight train.

Wish I could say that my first concert was The Jesus & Mary Chain (it was my second). Years before I saw the Reid brothers in Glasgow's Barrowlands I went to see Big Country in Edinburgh. I have very sketchy memories of that concert. I did enjoy it but I was so far back that I didn't really see much. I loved the band at the time though so I do recall having a great time.
The last concert I attended was months ago (last year in fact). I went to see Coldplay when they played Glasgow just after the release of A Rush Of Blood To The Head. It was a great gig. Idlewild were the support act and went down a storm.

Great show. It was nice to finally put a face to Blake Schwarzenbach's distinctive voice. I was a big fan of Jawbreaker, so I have been rocking out to this guys songs for years now. I saw two Jawbreakers shows back in the day, but due to circumstances far beyond my control (*drugs and alchohol*) I really dont remember much from either show. Saw two concerts that last two days.
Tuesday I went to a promotional battle of the bands for Jack Black's new movie The School of Rock (saddly Jack did not attend). They had 7 bands each play one song and then the top three got to play on the CBS Morning Show the next morning. My friends band was chosen from the many who submitted their tapes to be in the battle, however, he did not make it to the finals. I thought 3 of the bands were pretty good, the rest of them were not very good. The judges picked 2 of the ones I liked. And my favorite ended up winning the big prize the next morning.
Wednesday I saw Built to Spill at the Metro in Chicago. It was a great show. They played my 3 favorite songs so I was very happpy. Plus during the encore they covered The Clash's great "White Man in Hammersmith Palais". Which gets double points because it is the song that 311 did an awesome cover of for the Clash tribute album a few years back.
Good Times.

I like The Mars Volta but if you have any spare cash lying around I would STRONGLY recommend getting tickets for both The Raveonettes and Interpol. I would have chosen both these bands over The Mars Volta who have adopted a scary tendency for allowing their live performances to become extended jam sessions that beat no relation to the album from whence (I assume) most of the material is taken. Not always. But their live perfomances seem to be variable in terms of entertainment value.
If you can only afford one more ticket then go for The Raveonettes. One of the best albums i've heard this year.

I've seen the Mars Volta three times and I have to disagree with psychocandy as far as their live experience goes. It's actuallyb etter than the album in my eyes. If were in your shoes I would have made the same choice.

I didn't say that they always went into extended jam mode. I said that their live performances were variable in terms of entertainment value. I haven't actually seen them live. I have read a whole bunch of live reviews and it seems that sometimes they suck and sometimes they don't. I'd love to see them to make my own mind up. As much as I love their album though the Raveonettes and Interpol albums strike a chord with me that The Mars Volta do not. If it seemed like I was making a blanket statement a bout the Mars Volta live experience...I wasn't. I'm certain that they are capable of putting on a helluva show. :D

Have you heard of how interpol is live? Someone told me they arn't that good and I'm sort of scared now.... but I love their cd so much.

Yeah Interpol isn't great live. Their shows just aren't that long. I saw one and it was under an hour forsure. But like you, I love their cd.
My first concert was Kiss, not a bad way to start out the whole concert experience....my last one was Korn, which was really a great energetic show. I've seen everyone so if you have any questions about what someone's like live, ask away, chances are I know

Just saw an R.E.M. concert tonight at Jones Beach ampitheater in New York. Let me just say, it was definitely one of the five best concerts I've ever attended, and I am a total concert junkie, seen hundreds of them. They sound incredible live, Michael Stipe performs like he loves it and he is a very funny and politically cool guy, and they played ALL of their older songs that I adore. Everybody hurts, End of the world, Losing my religion, man on the moon, etc. It was just amazing. Wow.
Next up: Radiohead

Saw Radiohead last night in West Palm, and while the concert was fundamentally a good one, and it was A LOT of fun, it felt a bit showy-er than I was expecting. I'm not a huge fan of Hail to the Thief, but they finished up with Karma Police and Everything in its Right Place. Overall, a good night.

I went to Radiohead last night in West Palm as well and I was blown away. By far my favorite concert I've been to, though the competition isn't that big, still a great show, in my eyes.
Just
Street Spirit
Karma Police
Paranoid Andriod
Idioteque
Talk Show Host
The Gloaming
Backdrifts
A Wolf at the Door
You and Whose Army (Thom is one funny motherfucker!!)
Everything In It's Right Place
... those were the highlights for me, all amazing. Thom sounded great, Johnny went insane on his guitar... the energy, lighting, sounds, songs. I totally LOVED it.
Definitely worth my 40 bucks or so.

Notch, I also LOVED Street Spirit (Fade Out) and was sort of disappointed with Paranoid Android.
Anywho...it was, indeed, a great night.

Hell yea! Did you see them play at Madison Square Garden? Or did you see them a few weeks ago?
They put on a GREAT fucking show. I highly recommend everyone catch an REM concert at least once in their lives.

It was great duder! He did the entire Greendale album first, with theatrics done to the theme and lyrics of the tunes. It was pretty cool and when the album was finished, Neil and Crazy horse came out and did some classics like Hey hey, My my and Cinniman girl. I had a great time!

I was also at the Radiohead West Palm show and enjoyed it very much. Seems the rumors were true...Thom seems a bit looser on stage than on previous tours. He was quite funny during You and Whose Army (loved the middle finger bit :p ) Also enjoyed Phils sashaying during Backdrifts. Dedicating We Suck Young Blood to Clear Channel was brilliant..Clear Channel SUCKS ("They're really nice...no they are!") I got goosebumps when the crowd sang along with Just and Karma Police. Also loved it when during "the raindrops" refrain from Sit Down,Stand Up what seemed like HUNDREDS of blue glow sticks were thrown in the air. It gave off a cool effect. Overall a good show and as Notch said well worth the $40.

Last night I saw The Mars Volta. The opening act was a slam poet named Saul Williams. While I didn't agree with a lot of his ideas, he was obviously a talented writer and performer. After him was when Mars Volta came on. They opened with roulette dares, and it was amazing to be able to see them perform it live. The entire show was approximately an hour and a half long and they only played seven songs total. At one point the entire band except the bassist left the stage and he went into about an eight minute bass solo. At some points I was so amazed by what I assume was improvisation that I forgot what song they had started playing before they would bust back in with the familiar stuff from the album. I did catch a hint of pretentiousness when the lead singer said "Fuck you to all the people who were drinking and talking during Saul Williams; we are here to educate you". But, I was able to get past that and enjoy the music. Overall it was an amazing conert experience and would pay to do it again.
This was the setlist:
Roulette
Drunkship
Cicatriz
Concertina
Televators
Eriatarka

Just saw Mike Doughty at the Double Door in Chicago last night.
Doughty was the former lead singer of one of my favorite bands, Soul Coughing.
I was very excited about this show. I have been lazy about checking out Doughty's solo stuff, so I was basically going into this show blind.
I enjoyed the show, but at the same time I was dissapointed (is that possible?). The music was good, but it was not what I was hoping for. Definately much more conventional than any of Soul Coughing's stuff. It was lacking the funky experimental edge that I loved from his former band.
But, I still had a good time. He was talkative and engaging and the crowd was really into it. Fun times.
Next: Possibly White Stripes and Flaming Lips on New Years in Chicago, but tickets are pricey, so I am still not sure yet.
