The Use of the Smiley

I did this before about two years ago, somewhere, anywhere and got replies filled with smilies... it was hilarious.

Smileys suck... lets face it people, they are not capable of portraying your emotions and they appear quite immature to those who choose not to employ them.

They're little yellow faces! I thought we got over those in the 80;'s... cyberspace sucks because of sucky smiley faces.

The use, however, that grates upon me the most is the employment of a smiley after a pathetic joke or a faux insult... as if that stupid little face is going to compensate for a complete lack of substantial humour. It's like having sex with someone and being a complete dud and then offering them a novelty expression. As if a face can ever make up for anything.

If you reply with a smiley, I congratulate you in advance.

Bwahaha... that's always worked for me.

I used to be with you on the emoticon thing, and never used to use them at all - but over time, I learned that they were useful for some purposes. Usually, if you've made a sarcastic remark, and you want to make sure that the person you're talking with doesn't actually take it seriously. I usually use it as a safety valve if I think that somebody might read a post as more aggressive than it is.

Although the rolleyes one is really handy...

Well I checked my videostore on the way home from school and they raised the price of older movies! I haven't been there for a year.

The Price is not 4.23 including tax! Now this sucks. Even though I don't go it sucks for the people that do go.

I hate them too. It's as if you can say anything disrespectful, mean, and hurtful but as long as you put a smiley, you're ok. It goes the other way too. You can say something completely tongue-in-cheek or sarcastic but God help you if you forget a smiley.

The fact that this thread is still active surprises the hell out of me. It's not related to movie talk and it pretty much cuts down something fun for most people. If you hate smileys, fine. Write your congressman. But this is a movie thread. It is meant for you to "Bitch about all things Hollywood." I'm sure the smileys aren't everyone's bag, but most people here enjoy them.
