Very very very entertaining and a very good cast :
Famke Janssen ( gorgeous !!!! ) Treat Williams, and the third guy who plays the ingeneer, mechanist man.
Okay sometimes the FX are very obvious but who cares if it is enjoyable ?
I like every - minute of it, really.
It is funny, cool, entertaining, gory, black humor.
Good movie mister Sommers ( The Mummy )

MINOR SPOILERS
A few recent films have tried to emulate the effervescent cheese of fun b-movies from the ‘50s. Some have succeeded in capturing that loose, energetic vibe, but others have failed miserably. Gargantua was a droning exercise in formulaic “terror.” A sense of entertainment was exchanged for pathetic CGI and throwaway characters. Spiders had the campy spirit down to a science, but the abhorrent dialogue was a true test of endurance. Eight Legged Freaks was…well, I haven’t seen it yet, but it doesn’t matter anyway. I’m here to tell you that Deep Rising kicked my ass all over the place! It knows that it’s just dumb fun, and it never pretends to be anything different. The minor qualms I have with this flick are almost completely eclipsed by its sheer entertainment value. Its roaring action sequences, badass sea monster shenanigans, and kinetic character interaction will hit your b-movie senses just right. Perhaps this is what the stereotypical, melodramatic The Beast should have been. When the plot involves a giant octopus, do you see yourself connecting with the characters or being interested in the dramatic aspects of the aquatic tale? Nope! I’m sure that it’s possible to concoct a solid drama/sea monster hybrid, but you’re better off just flowing with the campiness of it all. Deep Rising does just that. From the very get go, we’re assured that the tongue is placed firmly in cheek.
Our characters are fairly generic, but they’re played in a self-knowing manner. Treat Williams fares well as the typical hero. Some of his lines are forced, but you end up liking the guy. This is admirable because I’m usually dismayed by the handsome “superman” who winds up getting the hot girl, but it was surprisingly easy to warm up to him this time around. Famke Janssen rocks as the pickpocket-turned-love interest. She’s gorgeous, somewhat multi-layered, and looks great in a vibrant red dress. Commence drooling. It goes without saying that we get a token goofball/wisecracker. Kevin J. O’Connor provides this comedy relief as Joey with varying degrees of triumph. This is actually the second time that he’s been in a genre film with Janssen, their first bloodbath together being Lord of Illusions. He impressed me by exuding a decidedly kookier personality. I’ll be honest; at least half of his dialogue is cringe-inducing. When the jokes fall flat, they really fall flat. But even so, I dug him. He heightens the upbeat energy of the film and his continual quips keep the pace alive and kicking, even the treacherous ones. There’s one aspect of the story that I simply couldn’t buy. Joey’s relationship with the Korean chick, Leila, felt out of place. I have to give credit to the script for offering an unorthodox couple, but it just doesn’t work. We don’t see them together enough to really accept them as a single unit and their chemistry just isn’t convincing. Still, there’s a touching moment involving Joey and Leila toward the end, but I won’t spoil it.
Rob Bottin designed the creature. Need I say more??? This is one cool critter. Think of a graboid, but quadruple the size, and quadruple the intensity. It’s brutal, unrelenting, and…it drinks you! After swallowing you whole, it sucks your bones dry of all bodily fluids, and then coughs up your skeletal remains. Disgusting, yet a wonderful excuse to fill this movie to the brim with blood! The gory sequences are actually sparse, but when the carnage comes, it thumps you out cold! I love the unexpected axe to the head, but my favorite gruesome bit arrives when a half-digested body is spewed forth from one of the squid’s tentacles. Half of his face is missing, he’s soaked in a nauseating goo, a few of his muscles are exposed, and he’s still alive! Ah, an enchanting sight to behold. For the most part, the special effects are top-notch, but the CGI is irrefutably weak. It was even shoddy for 1998. Director Stephen Sommers gives the film a sparkle. He really knows how to orchestrate a high-octane action sequence. I’ve been apprehensive about checking out his larger-than-life Mummy films, but now, I’m tempted to give them a shot. I doubt that they’ll entertain me as much as Deep Rising did, though. I’ve seen this flick roughly five times now, and each subsequent viewing feels like the first time that I’ve experienced its unbridled monster mayhem. It does have a few measly pitfalls, but in the end, they don’t amount to much at all. This is an extremely satisfying creature feature. Dare I say it; it’s one of the best horror films of the late ‘90s!
My rating-4.5/5

I actually tracked this down a little while ago..
killer monster, some baddddasss action sequences. Pretty fun movie, if you ask me..!
Decent CGI, but the gore wasn't too good.. although, the fat, naked guy who looked like Rodney Dangerfield bobbing around in the water kinda got to me..

This film was probably over looked by a lot of people. It was very entertaining and i liked most of the action scenes. The monsters were well thought up and portrayed nicely.

How can you go wrong in a monster movie, when the desings for the monster were made by Rob Bottin, better known for his work in The thing?
This film was soooo good to me that I saw litteraly five times in the theater when it first came out! I looved it to death.
Hey this film is what gives me hope that Stephen Sommers and his new Van Helsing is gonna kick ass!
