Maybe they feel that they've made their point multiple times but no one seems to be accepting that it's a valid argument and posting the same thing again wouldn't make any difference because the other person is just not willing to budge from their position. If not that, then maybe they feel like the other person is stereotyping and making judgments about them, based on their age possibly, and they do not want to take part in a discussion like that anymore. It doesn't necessarily have to said outright, but there can be a hint of arrogance and superiority in someone's post when that person thinks that they know much more than the other person. For example, and I'm just giving a general example, one person could think they know much more about the other person on the subject of women, and so they'll say indirectly that "You don't know women at all." That can be off-putting. In such a situation, I would understand why someone would want to get the last word in.

Its kind of annoying to see people base an arguement on who repeats the same shit the most.. whether its considered "not following up" or not, I couldn't give a fuck.. That kinda thing pisses me off to the point where I "Alt-F4" the bejesus out of it!
:D
[Lastword]Seriously, though.. a little while ago there were a few Heated debates over the SAME topic down on the horror boards. On about Twelve different threads, mind you. I saw where they were going, so I kept my ass out of it.. Until, of course, I lost my temper and felt the need to fling shit around.. Actually Trying to get the last word in is as unsatisfying as getting into the arguement in the first place.

Ah-ha.
It is actually polite to step out of conversation in lieu of repeating yourself.
However, do you feel that it sucks when someone refuses to offer new insight to the new insight you have offered.
And instead of saying, "Well, I can't think of anything to say about that. I'll think about it."
or the one I like to use: "I stand corrected." (A rare moment when you'll find a brief Bubba)
They choose to try and make a otherwise civil discussion into something more pety by defaming it and brushing it off like some piece of dandruff??
I think that is the basis of my rant.
As far as I'm concerned we are all equals who just disagree about things, and maybe use different words to get our ideas across. I don't feel there is any need to act like someone (including yourself) is a bigger man, because we don't really know anything about any us besides the words we use.
There is absolutely NO REASON to act like we are "above" posting in a thread.
And yes, this does parallel with an older rant that was about people saying PERSONAL things that no one asked them about.
Great, you don't want to post in the thread.
Go start a topic about you not wanting to post in a thread and stop mucking this one up!!
And believe you me, there are those of us who can communicate that we are not posting in a thread anymore without trying to sound like it's a CHEAP ATTEMPT TO GET IN THE LAST WORD!
Any constructive feedback?
If not...
Well, here's my last word....

(I cant use the quote option for some reason..)
Rather than keep an idle arguement going, I'll leave. IMO, its rare to see that kind of self-importance on the board and what you'd refer to as "brushing something off like some piece of dandruff" is as civil as some people are going to get..!!!! I really dont see anything arrogant in wanting to end such a discussion for the fear of not being civil. In fact, for the most part, I appreciate it~~~!
In the case of the debate on Gen horror a little while ago, a LOT of people stood clear of them for the fear of getting dragged into something that just got bloody and went nowhere... I wouldn't, for a second, assume that any of the people avoiding it felt as though they were "above" anything! People (including Myself), went in there and started a little backlash because it was fogging up the boards
.. Not to say that it wasn't Constructive, of course....

I agree with you that it is civil to want to walk out, even if you mention it.
I really dont see anything arrogant in wanting to end such a discussion for the fear of not being civil.
Do you see anything arrogant in wanting to end a discussion, and you have been civil the entire time, but then when you walk out you make a scene, and throw in a few personal remarks?
And really, I don't understand the whole "winning a debate" mentality. I very seldom feel like we are debating when we are disagreeing around here.
It's more like a discussion, where we are adding new ideas and new thoughts.
No one can win a discussion.
So why throw a hissy, and get your panties in a twist? You aren't looking like a loser, just someone who is disagreeing with someone else.
Get over it.

Man, there is nothing fuckin' worse than "last word" warriors. The worst thing is when you're so committed to putting the smackdown on one of these fuckers, so you end up becoming one yourself.
Somebody once said that internet arguments are like fighting with water pistols - nobody can score a decisive "victory", so people just squeeze the trigger harder and harder, and more and more frantically. Some people have discovered that getting the last word is the only way to "win".
These people can't be beaten, 'cause they will descend to "trees are blue" kind of logic tricks, deliberate misunderstanding, anything that might force their opponent to give up on the thread, so they can throw their hands up in the air and be a winner. I particularly hate it when, after you've pointed out a hole in an argument, they just turn around and completely redefine, on the fucking spot, what their argument was, or worse still, they play the nihilist card, and say "what's your problem anyway? I don't care, one way or another." This will go on forever, until the person who cares less (it's never the guy who "doesn't care") gives up.
The "I don't care" argument is otherwise known as the NIHILIST APOCALYPSE MOVE™. Those that use it will say this over and over again, and get more and more agitated - who are you trying to kid???
But the most effective last word strategy I've seen is the BURY YOUR OPPONENT IN A SEA OF MEANINGLESS SHIT™ move. This is when people reply with nine paragraphs of repetitive or irrelevant, "I-totally-missed-maybe-even-deliberately-your point" nonsense. And if you miss dealing with just "one" sentence, they'll stalk you all over (even into other threads), taunting you with it. They're the type of person that when you finally just decide to ignore them, will post a smirking, lingering final post in the original thread... Something like "cat got your tongue"?
This is the moment at which that pen in your hand snaps, ink runs down your thumb, a bat flies in your window, and the idea of relentlessly hunting down criminals to avenge the death of your father first occurs to you.
I much prefer a debate that's an exchange of views. As long as people are genuinely interested in debating/discussing the subject, I don't really mind. I just can't stand it when somebody's sole purpose in a thread is to somehow choke the life out of it and win some imaginary battle - generally they have no real interest in the actual topic, anyhow.
Anyway, that's the last thing I've got to say in this thread.
Unless somebody replies to this. And if nobody does, I win.

There is one Schmoe I know who MUST get the last word in. He's alright in many other ways but his arguments are easily refutable but he WILL not concede to another viewppoint. that said, last-word-itis is only mildly irritating. I HATE when people quote me and then base their entire argument around that quote - and near as often, the quote is out of context.

He also likes to assume things about others. Once he said I didn't support freedom of speech, and I didn't even bother replying to that because he'd have some other ridiculous argument to throw my way.

RE: This is indeed the most difficult one. Someone posts a long post. You try to give a very convincing and well-argumented counter-argument. You show his post to be illogical.
So what the guy does next is that he completely IGNORES your arguments and answers with trivial stuff that is only loosely connected to the original topic. The discussion goes out of hand immediately. You don't get decent feedback to your arguments, they are ignored. Instead the other fellow will just write and write endlessly until you realize that you can't possibly spend all your time in the argument, especially since it's not going anywhere.
