About a year ago a colleague let me borrow a couple of Emmylou Harris CDs as a result of my having told her I was a fan of Steve Earle (Steve and Emmylou have dueted a few times with stunning results). The CDs in question were Red Dirt Girl and Wrecking Ball. I was totally blown away. I went in expecting something that was purely Country & Western in tone but came out with a massive amount of respect for a woman who has succeeded in redefining herself and her music so that it has broken free of the generic shackles she could so easily have allowed herself to be caught up in. Since then i've backtracked and have discovered a wealth of brilliant albums strewn throughout a career that has lasted decades. Are there any schmoes out there who have heard any of her albums? So far i've go the aforementioned Red Dirt Girl, Wrecking Ball, Spyboy, The Ballad Of Sally Rose, Roses In The Snow and a Best Of type jobbie. Any recommendation re where I should go from here are appreciated.

Just watch this post plummet into oblivion. I'm betting it's on the second page before the end of the week. :D

Wasn't it Emmylou Harris who sang on O Brother Where Art Thou?

She was on the Oh Brother, Where Art Thou Soundtrack. Don't know how many tracks she was involved in. She definitely shared vocal duties on Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby.

She's worth investigating further. BTW...did you check out my Iron & Wine suggestion a few threads down from this one. I think it would be right up your street R&J. :D

Her version of Don Mclean's And I Love You So would be an awesome choice for anybody's wedding and Tennessee Waltz and Waltz Across Texas both take awards for being some of the most moving songs of the genre.

I adore Emmylou! Her voice is one of the most definitive female voices today and she has colaborated on more albums than any female artist. Her talent is rare and special and admired/revered by anyone with taste.

Can you tell I adore this woman?

One of the purest, sweetest voices in American music. Has always followed her own muse and never really tried to copy trends. Also is a thoughtful person and doesn't pander to the LCD.

Ooooooh, imagine Gram without Emmylou.

It'd be like roast beef without yorkshires!!!

Emmylou's voice is pure velvet...:)
