Marvin Gaye was such a badass singer. One of the best soul singers ever, his death in 1984 at the hands of his own father remain one of music's most senseless losses. His classic album What's Goin' On was his commentary on the social ills of the era and was recorded during a massive cocaine binge. Post your favorite Marvin Gaye song or album and views on his music, drug and sexual addictions.

It's tough to pick a favorite song but I'll have to go with I Heard It Through The Grapevine (the use of the song at the beginning of THE BIG CHILL was a brilliant move by Kasdan, it sets the tone real well).

#2 and #3 would be

What's Going On and

Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)

Favorite Duet (and he had quite a few!)

It Takes Two Marvin Gaye & Kim Weston

I have no doubt in my mind if he were still alive today he'd be just as popular and relevant as he was at his peak in the 60's and 70's on the Motown label...

Baddass describes this cat well!

Simply one of the best r&b singers EVER. The way he mixed great love songs (Lets get it on) and social commentary (Whats Goin On, Inner City Blues-brilliant song) is unparalled. I wish some of the current r&b atrist would do the same. I'd rather hear the simple and straight to the point refrain of "Lets get it on" than listen to graphic lyrics of how some guys going to stick his "love pole" into his girls "mound of love pudding"

A man who stands proudly in the R&B leading man tradition with Sam Cooke, Wilson Picket and (my personal fave), Otis Redding.

His career has two distinct and equally wonderful phases. The early Motown stuff where he looks like Nat King Cole is one. That's the period of the fun stuff like Hitchike, Can I Get A Witness, Pride and Joy and the unspeakably brilliant I Heard It Through The Grapevine. He did a ton of duets but all the best ones (IMHO), were the ones he did w/ Tammi Terrell. Their sly, affectionate personas mixed as perfectly as their voices. You will have to look long and hard to find a sexier song than Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, Baby. I think their really enduring classic, and a classic of Motown production, rivaling Phil Spector at this best, is Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

The second phase of Marvin's career, starting w/ What's Going On, which featured that great, distinctive look with the beard and the more casual clothes, pictured in ayw530's post above, is also dear to me. He was in superb form, as a singer and a songwriter. He proved conclusively that good songs that have real and important lyrical content are possible.

Anybody who saw him sing the National Anthem at the NBA all-star game, will never forget it.
