This early Michael Mann movie is a masterpiece!! i forgot it during almost 20 years and a friend o'mine owns it on vhs. I saw it again and woahh! it's still making its effect, espeially the villain Radu Molasar the incarnation of pure evil and the atmosphere in the old castle, and also the music from Tangerine Dream. What are your thoughts ?

The Keep is a fine film.
After reading the book, I can safely understand the film without having a puzzled look on my face.
Of course, THE KEEP does feature young up and comers Gabriel Byrne (fine girly screech you got there, Byrne), Alberta Watson, and a young Ian McKellen, excellent as Cuza.
The only terrible part was how Glaeken and Magda/Eva bond was cut out and the rivalry was drawn out between the two commanders. Molasar wasn't as commanding as he could be, but blame the low budget.
Still. A potent gem. Tangerine Dream lends a lot to the film and Michael Mann knows what he wants. Beware the horrible quality of the video, it has not been remastered yet.
The strange, offbeat feel of THE KEEP is interesting.
Glaeken could have been a caricature, but Scott Glenn portrays the conflict very well, considering he didn't have much to work with.
THE KEEP is a keeper. Couldn't resist it.

F. Paul Wilson claims Mann botched the job, so I haven't bothered... yet....
and on a lighter note REPAIRMANJACK RULES!
Cannot wait till next year....
THE KEEP ain't great but still a fun flick.
Can't wait for that DVD coming in October. I'm certain Paramount WON'T include those alternate scenes and endings. Ah well.

Ugh! Paramount! I'll send the Byrne and his Nazi cut after their ass if they don't include alternate scenes and that extended ending.
THE KEEP deserves the best presentation, since its an aural experience as well as a visual one.

I just caught it on A&E, I think, after nearly a decade or so. I used to love "The Keep," but now I have to say ... my god, what a terrible movie. Like Lady Summerisle said, "After reading the book, I can safely understand the film without having a puzzled look on my face." The movie is absolutely incomprehensible without knowledge of the book. Oh, it looks gorgeous, great TD score (why the hell hasn't it been released on CD?!), and the keep itself is great. But the story is so fractured I kept thinking to myself, "How did I follow this flick at all before I read the book?" I guess it must have been one of those films I thought made sense, but I just didn't get it. Now I know I know better; it's a mess. Having said that, I have to confess it will probably remain a guilty pleasure for me, and if it ever turns up on DVD I'll more than likely pick it up. But, egads. F. Paul Wilson had every reason to be mad. By the way, has anybody read is short story "Cuts" in his collection "Soft and Others"? It pretty much expresses his feelings in fiction form regarding what Mann did to his novel. I recommend the collection in general, but do yourself a favor and skip the story "Buckets" which, apart from being the only truly awful story in the bunch, is also propaganda of the vilest kind. Honestly, I lost a lot of respect for Wilson after reading this one.

I own the Keep on vhs, haven't watched it in a while but I remember it being pretty good. I've been always been into the idea of a horror film being set during the war. It sort of lost me toward the end however when the main guy started shooting a light rod or something at the demon. I dunno what that was all about
Oh yeah, the demon in this flick looks buff as hell.
