it was obviously a decent cheesy B-movie with an A-movie budget, good actors and special effects even if the creature from the deep 's design was awful. What are your thoughts ?

Awful movie I thought. Although it had the guy who was in Police Academy 5 and 6. I thought this movie was quite dull and not worth watching in any way. It sucks and blows. I remember the monster was pretty cool looking though.

I actually like DS6 better than LEVIATHAN. It had better characters, whereas LEVIATHAN had bland ones. Never for a moment did I forget in LEVIATHAN that these people were just acting. In DS6, everyone reminded me of people I had known or knew or worked with in the past.
LEVIATHAN had the bigger budget and eye candy, but DS6 IMO was the better movie.

Deep Star Six had one thing going for it that always works:
CASTING MIGUEL FERRER. He lent a lot of talent to his role and his breakdown was pathetic and real all at once.
Greg Evigan was never much of an actor but Ferrer and some other cast members (Nancy E. not as intense as Miguel though, Ernie Hudson) make up for it.
Decent FX.

Yes Miguel Ferrer is the coolest! I actually forgot he was in this movie! This was a pretty good role for him too, nice and obnoxious.
P.S. - Lady Summarise, Ernie Hudson was in "Leviathan", not "DS6".

When The Abyss , was getting made, and it was obvious that it was gonna be big, all the other movie studios wanted to do their own "underwater adventure" monster movie, and cash in on all the underwater fun, so we got Leviathan, and the worse of the bunch Deep Star Six
The monster in Deepstar, was almost never seen and had no personality what so ever, it was just blah. The only thing that saves Deepstar Six, was the characters, they were likable. But thats about it. They were also generic, and derivative of films like Aliens.
Leviathan, was a bit higher in Budget, and had a decent monster. Good actors, and good sets. Movie is preatty decent, right up to the ending wich for some reason, I just didnt like. I mean, what the hell was up with those sharks? That was so unnecesary.
And that ending ripped off Aliens. I dont know for a movie with a decent budget and decent actors, they could have come up with a better way to end the film.
I'm allergic to seafood and Sean S. Cunningham's "crabby" attempt to cash in on James Cameron's The Abyss almost provoked an allergy attack :D
I thought Miguel Ferrer got wasted here. He's a cool actor and all but shouldn't have been in this film. I liked Cindy Pickett's (Ferris Bueller's Mom) character though. She was tough as nails, kinda like "Ripley-Light".
The creature looked very cool if you could get a glimpse of it, reminded me of that headsucking worm in From Beyond.
Deep Star Sux is cheezy as hell but makes a great double feature with the slighty better Leviathan.

I personally could never consider Leviathan better than DS6 mostly because of the monster. The one in Leviathan looked soooo incredibly bad and they kept parading it around like it was cool. At least in Deepstar they kep their crappy monster hid most of the time.
btw I actually own a copy of deepstar six, how friggin lame is that. even worse, I pull it out every few months for a watch.

Well it wasn`t a great role or anything, but he DID get in a few good obnoxious moments, like when he interupts the couple making-out.
He's a cool actor and all but shouldn't have been in this film.
I agree he probably shouldn`t have been in this, but hey I guess he had bills to pay!
It could be worse, at least he didn`t end up going the Lance Henriksen route and star in one bad direct-to-video cheapie after another.

No, Miguel didn't.
He now steals scenes on CROSSING JORDAN, worth watching just for him.

I sure do remember it and I wish I didn't. I very poor sci-fi flick. There was some decent gore but nothing too over-the-top and the movie just seemed to drag on at times. I give it a 4/10

I agree with you in part Frogmonkey, cause when they kept the movies monster hidden from us and only showed us its slimy tentacles, feet, and arms, (wich were well achieved as far as fx go) well it was a heck of a lot more interesting and mysterious, we hoped that there was a cool looking creature hidden away in the darkness somewhere... but when they finally showed the whole creature, It was dissapointing in deed. Wich is why I say I didnt like the ending of Leviathan, that and the sharks, oh and the "monster isnt dead" ending from Aliens.

I personally liked Leviathan more than DS6..I just have fond memories of seeing it in the theater when I was 9. Oh and dropping my hot dog and watching it roll to the front row :( What was the name of the 3rd underwater monster movie that came out during that same time? I think it was a Roger Corman flick...it was REALLY sucky and had a crappy monster.

Cunning Visions (cool screenname BTW) - that Corman movie was called "Lords Of the Deep" I believe.

Same here, Leviathan was much better. It had an eeriness that didn't come through in Deep Star Six. I think I'll give Deep Star Six another try so I can give a full review (haven't seen it in years).
