I'll do a list for The Beatles, since they're my favorite band.

I have however decided to make it a bit harder on myself by limiting the list to 12 essential songs. Otherwise, I'd pick at least 25-30 songs and this is supposed to be an essential's list rather than a "best of".

So, I've tried to mix-in some silly with the serious in order to give a virgin listener of the band a greater idea of "who" The Beatles are or were...

(in no particular order)

1. Yesterday
2. Can't Buy Me Love
3. Something
4. Let It Be
5. Blackbird
6. All You Need Is Love
7. Girl
8. Revolution
9. From Me To You
10. Hey Jude
11. Strawberry Field's Forever
12. I'll Follow The Sun/Michelle (tie :D )

Just way too many songs to choose from, Siren. Opiate is still an awesome song/album, but the ones I listed are my absolute favorites, the songs I can't live without and so on...

I think I can go a day without listening to Opiate, but when it comes to Aenima or Undertow, well I really don't want to think of the consequences ;)

More than 3 years since the last post... about bloody time this was brought back then. I got to thinking about this list and decided to have a go at it.

This will be a list for a 2 cd compilation, in chronological order

The Essential... Madonna

From Madonna / The First Album
Lucky Star
Borderline
Holiday

From Like A Virgin
Like A Virgin
Material Girl
Dress You Up

From True Blue
(I could put just about the whole album on this list, but I shan't)
Papa Don't Preach
Live To Tell
Where's The Party
True Blue

From Like A Prayer
(Again, every song is a candidate)
Like A Prayer
Promise To Try
Cherish
Dear Jessie
Oh Father

From I'm Breathless
Vogue

From The Immaculate Collection
Justify My Love

From Erotica
Erotica
Rain

From Bedtime Stories
Secret
Take A Bow

From Something To Remember
You'll See

From Ray of Light
Drowned World (Substitute For Love)
Ray of Light
Frozen

From Music
Music
Impressive Instant
Don't Tell Me

From GHV2
Beautiful Stranger

From American Life
Love Profusion
Nothing Fails

From Confessions On A Dancefloor
Hung Up
Future Lovers
Isaac

No apologies for sticking close to the singles. First off Madonna has always released lots of singles and generally picked her best tracks and secondly I think of a list like this as an introduction to an artist (if such a thing is even still possible with this one) and familliarity is always helpful in that.
