View Full Version : Bands you like, but a Greatest Hits will do
I mean bands you like to listen to, but a 1 or 2-disc "Greatest Hits" or "Best of" is really all you need.
For me:
Jimi Hendrix
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The Clash
David Bowie
Elvis Presley
The Rolling Stones
Steve Miller Band
Paul McCartney and The Wings
Romero&Juliet

My Janis Joplin's greatest hits gets more use than any of the albums.. oh, and the Creedence stuff, too.. Chronicle is a GREAT compilation. :)

I always say that if you're a real fan, then owning just a "Greatest Hits" compilation is unacceptable. After all, a great band is much more than a collection of singles.
That said, I do have several groups on a "Best of" package only:
Allman Brothers Band
America
Pat Benatar
Blondie
Jimmy Buffett
The Cars
CSN&Y
Duran Duran
Go-Go's
The Hooters
KC & the Sunshine Band
Kiss
Bob Marley
Poison
Queen
Santana
Simon & Garfunkel
The Smiths
3 Dog Night
The Who
Ok, so I'm a hypocrite. But I still hate those who call themselves Van Morrison fans but can't name anything but "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Moondance."

Lauri Anderson (2 cd Set)
.............
Laurie Anderson has so many gems hidden away in all of her cd's. Polydistortion you should really try to explore more if you even feel the slightest interest. A Great cd if your already a laurie fan is the ugly one with the jewels. It's just her telling stories from her life to background music and it's oh so good......

The Rolling Stones
I don't owe Mick Jagger anything.

The Clash
The Smiths
Talking Heads
The Police

The Cars
I have every Cure cd (including imports) but still only listen to their greatest hits cd.
Hay Polydistortion, I just got the Joy Division box set. It's well worth the money and has a lot more songs than Substance.

Nick Drake?!? Are you bloody mad!?! Y'all need to pick up Bryter Layter - then tell me the "Best of" is adequate.

I've actually got Bryter Layter...so I'm probably talking bollocks.
I'm astounded by David Bowie and The Smiths mind.

As much as I enjoy Nick Drake, there are really only a few of his songs a truly, truly love...so Best Of does the job for me

I'm listening to Bryter Layter as I type this, and it's such a beautiful collection of optimism, regret, wistfullness and open emotion. Drake's second album differs from his other work, in that it's been infused with jazz brass and piano, and a bit of Phil Spector's patented "wall of sound." "Fly," the track on now, was played during a quiet moment in The Royal Tenenbaums, and the tone of the song and the scene couldn't have been more complementary. Ah, bliss.
Props also to "At the Chime of the City Clock" - another track not included on Way to Blue, the "Best of."

Also, keep my choices in mind, knowing that I download a few extraneous songs by any band *anyway*...so my answers don't really count when you think about it :p
tsk tsk, FeverDog...Simon and Garfunkel? :)

Let me just use this brief moment in time to say:
In the immortal words of Bruce McCullough-"greatest hits albums are for housewives and little girls!" I don't own one and I don't believe in them!
Oops, I just realized I do own a greatest hits album. It's Christopher Cross. But since I like everything on it, I think I owe it to Christopher to buy the actual albums.
Anyway, back to my rant. If you really truly love an artist you are doing yourself a great disservice by only listening to radio friendly or well known tracks. Most of the time, these are by no means the meat of their work.
Thank you and 'those who are about to die, salute you'!

I've got Nick Drake's Pink Moon, but I'd do with the Best Of... as friends have said its well put together.
There's some pretty dodgy Best Of's out there... I've got a really misguided Velvet Underground one, half the songs are taken from the one album.
I'd agree on Jimi Hendrix.

Strange Brew comes to mind from Cream and also the first and second Billy Joel G. Hits.

I'd say mine are
blur and the pixies
I'd also say smashing pumpkins but I love them too much and I have everything plus their greatest hits, but for a minor fan, that would do

They're great, but I haven't moved onto to more of their CDs.

Journey have a greatest hits collection but why not treat yourself to "Raised On Radio","Frontiers" and "Escape" .
Same goes for...
Ratt -"Out Of The Cellar" is a classic US 80's metal release.
Soundgarden -"Badmotorfinger" and "Superunknown"
