It sucks, but hell, Phil's always been a bit of an individual, and he's always going to do what he wants, I guess. Pantera produced some of the best grindcore and thrash metal during the 90's, nice and heavy. It does seem that Pantera could've fallen victim to complacency with anything after Reinventing the Steel. Here's to hoping they'll reunite somewhere down the line.

I would like to hear another Pantera album sometime also, but there's so many good metal bands out there that I'm not too upset about it.
Pantera never played anything remotely close to grindcore btw.

It's disheartening to discover that he won't even continue with Down. I dig Superjoint Ritual, and I'm highly anticipating A Lethal Dose of American Hatred, but Anselmo is more versatile than that. I love Pantera, even if Reinventing the Steel flirted with mediocrity. They should at least unveil one more album before calling it quits, but such is life.

As much as I love metal, Pantera are one of my least favorite bands. They have one good album, Vulgar Display of Power. Since then, they've been putting out tired tunes that all sound alike, Phil's growling has gotten more annoying than adrenaline-pumping and the last album was absolutely awful. Also, their personalities suck ass. A bunch of redneck, confederate-flag toting, racist assholes. (Yeah, since then, they've written some politically correct lyrics and toured with Sevendust who has a black lead singer... that makes it all okay  ) Phil's drunkenness and huge fucking ego are a major turn-off too.
I'm glad they split.

i 100% totally agree. i have never really had much time for them and phil always came across as a bit of an ass quite frankly...

It's sad but I guess the band has pretty much run its course. I don't think I'll ever get into Superjoint or Down, they're both okay in my book but it's just that. I saw Pantera in '99 and they were in top shape back then. Memories, memories...

Well, you're right. Almost remotely close. So who's all in your grindcore catagory?

I must admit, the "redneck" vibe is off-putting. Their home videos are chalked full of redneck debauchery. It can be entertaining, but I could actually feel my IQ dwindling as I watched it. I deal with too many rednecks as it is (I live in the South); I don't need that bullshit coming from one of my favorite bands!

Grindcore is stuff like Napalm Death and early Carcass.

well, its not shocking news...shite, Im shocked Phil is still Alive! That guy is one messed up dude. Reinventing the Steel pretty much bored me and I havent really thought about them much after. I thought there there albums, Vulgar Display, Far Beyond, and Trendkill, were DAMN good...each one different and each one great. But I guess thay just ran out of steam.

I never understood that either. I mean, on "Vulgar Display Of Power", they had songs about politics and were against racism.
But then on the next two albums they went totally hillbilly! What gives?
I actually really liked them, the only album I didn`t like was "Far Beyond Driven". "Great Southern Trendkill" and "Reinventing the Steel" were both great once you get used to them IMO.

I don't mind Pantera's redneck image, or Phil's arrogance. The music was good and has a lot of influence on many modern metal acts today-- that are inferior. I have discovered better bands since I started listening to Pantera. But I still enjoy their stuff (Vulgar is still a classic in my books) and respect their legacy.

Pantera were a lot of things but they certainly were never racist. They may have moved on from singing about equality but they never said anything remotly racist on any album or even gave the impression they were.

I don't know about the whole redneck metalhead racism thing, but Vinnie Paul and Dimebag have collaborated on different projects with country singer David Allan Coe, who is notorious for his "nigger" songs early in his career.

...except for all the confederate flags they flashed around.
