How do you handle a DVD when you buy them? With 200% Tender loving care right?
Lately I have been frequenting my public libraries borrowing titles on DVD's are becoming the latest rage in library materials patrons take full advantage of. But what I HATE so much is DAMN FINGERPRINTS or SMUDGE MARKS I find on the discs!!!! If I dont catch this before inserting it into the player, obviously to certain point on the disc it will reflect on the screen when it gets there. IS this what you do on your own DVD's?!?! It would be OH SO GREAT if everyone took that extra 5 seconds and handled DVD's from the edges & the center hole when taking it out of or inseritng back into the case. The next person at the library and even at the chain/mom & pop video rentals stores would love you a million for that extra T.L.C. you gave.

Fair point. The most annoying are the people who disrespect library stock just because it's not their's. The public libraries are a great service; it would be nice if everyone realised that and acted accordingly.
I've stopped renting DVDs (from rental stores; my local li-berry only has VHS) because of the inconsiderate swine who paw all over the discs.
As you say, it only takes a few more seconds to treat it with a little care, so there's no excuse. If I was working somewhere that rented out DVDs, and someone handed me one back in the appalling condition I've seen some of them in, I'd pistol whip them to death (mmmm.... pistol whip). Nobody seems to care, bloody hippies.
The Rocky & Bullwinkle movie was completely ruined for me, all because some gimp who had the disc before me couldn't give a shit about it, scratched it, and caused it to skip. I doubt he treats HIS discs (Radiohead albums and the like, no doubt) with such disregard. Bastard.

I could never understand the ignorance behind mishandling cds and dvds. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to poke your finger into the hole and grab the disk by the edge.
To tell you the truth, I had the worst experience renting dvds at a mom and pop store...they could care less whether or not their disks are scratched a bajillion times and are smudged up to the point where you can make out the fucking finger print.

I take extreme care of my DVDs since movies are my passion. I let my friends borrow them on ocassion and one of them knows how serious I am about case and disc care. If got my movie back with finger prints, food crusts, and a little bit of water damage. The point is he ended up feeling pretty damn bad after I was finished with him.

This is why I rarely rent DVDs. I rented manhunter a while back and it was smudged beyond recognition.

My brother just proved to me why he can't handle my DVDs. I have good films and TV sets, but his DVD collection consists of wrestling (WWF, WCW, WWE, ECW, etc.)
He pulls out my DVD and lies it on its surface and doesn't even shut the damn DVD tray for his own crappy DVDs.
It's upsetting. Very upsetting. But maybe I just take my collection too seriously.

That's why I generally only rent new release DVDs, and even then, only the ones that just came out. If I can, I rent all other movies on video.

I have yet to find out how these things get into such bad shape. Who can honestly do all this damage to a DVD on accident? I've had many of my DVD's for well over a year and a half, and they still look brand friggin' new.
Please, handle our movies with care, I don't want to have to come to your house...

At my local video store, they let the DVDs get scratched and don't do shit about it. I don't know how at least two films end because the disc was so fucked, and when i reported it they didn't pay any attention.

Nobody seems to care, bloody hippies.
It would be the hippies taking really good care of it, not hurting them.
No one has topped my story. I rented Rambo III on DVD (the best movie ever, right? :D ) and it had some sticky stuff that was invisible to the naked eye. I only touch the center ring and outer edge, so I didn't feel it.
Suffice to say, after a half hour of playtime it glitched for a few seconds then locked up. I couldn't eject the tray as it was stuck to the top. After much deliberation and attemps to unstick it gently, I took the whole DVD player apart to get it out.
For several months thereafter, the DVD player would occasionally skip or even lose chapters. It seems to have worked itself out though. I did clean it eventually, just recently, which for some reason I didn't think to do immediately.
On rentals, I now always check them thouroughly.

I always handle the discs that I rent from the video store with as much care as the discs I own. I don't want to be one of those people who go "Well it's not mine, so I don't care if it gets scratched."

I treat DVDs the way I wanna be treated. In other words, I treat DVDs like they were myself: myself. :D

***MAJOR ASS BUMP!***
I put in a disc of FAT ALBERT (shaddup!) btw I grew watchin the cartoon show sooooo I am eager to see HOW BAD this flick is....
Now back onto the topic....
The disc put out by Fox is 2 sided and I immediately noticed theres smudge marks on it!
wtf?!?!? If I had connections to like the F.B.I. or whatever I would ID the prints and come over to your house and bitch slap you like Bernie Man seen in the movie HEAD OF STATE!
I am poor so I also use the library. My library has an excellent selection. I have run into trouble many times with messed up discs. Sometimes it looks like these fuck tards are using them for drink coasters or eating sammiches off of. What the fuck is so hard about case-to-DVD player and in reverse. STOP FUCKING UP MY LIBRARIES STUFF MANG!!!

i take really good of my dvds. I only loan them to a few people.
But them know how to handle them. Also I take off the slip sleeve that comes with some of the dvds, so they don't ruin them trying to get them back in. Let's figure this: 138 dvds x average $15.00/each = $2,070
you bet I am going to take care of them.
I rent them at the local video stores, they look like they used them for coasters. Alot of people have no respect for other people's stuff.
If you want to scratch a dvd up, buy your own copy of it.
Also don't let your kids play with them. Put them on a shelf when they can't reach them. What's wrong with people?

Let's look outside the DVD box guys...
Half the people that rent DVDs from the library don't even take good care of themselves.
My library actually came up with a rule that they could toss you out if your personal hygeine problems were disturbing other guests.
I seriously came across a couple of guys last Summer in the dvd section... smelling to bloody hell. They were in their mid 40s, and actually looked as if they had grime caked all over their skin. The smell wasn't shit, nor underarm, but this cloaking odor of something that just rang the tune of 'scabies' in my head. I've never seen someone with scabies, nor do I intend to, but for some reason in the parallels of my mind, that was the word I had invented for that smell.
SCABIES.
But anyways... the moral of the story is that scummy people rent the DVDs too, and you really can't expect much out of them.

The worst cast of DVD mishandling from the previous renter was crayon markings (which made it NOT play), smudges and fingerprints and DRIED YOGURT. I have my own disc polisher and I also clean them with Alcohol, but please. It is also my pet peeve to see people treat other peoples property like trash.

many of the DVDs ive rented from blockbusters seem to have been used for drink coasters, they are generally scratched to shit and covered in fingerprints and im surprised most of them play perfectly

All the DVDs I've gotten from my library have been alright so far, but the CDs all look like people decided to take them outside and fling them down a gravelly road. I don't think I've ever gotten a CD from my library that hasn't skipped at least once.

I handle all my dvds with great loving care. Not a scratch, nor fingerprint on any.

Well...call me un PC or bigoted cocksucker all day long but my experience which is all I have to go on is there IS a certain Class of people when it comes to this matter. I have also tried the "specials" at BB and Hollywood Video
I rent from Netflix and after 5 years and about 1,000 movies later here are my unscientific findings:
Netflix: 3 unplayable due to scratches and 2 cracked and unplayable.out of like 1,000 movies... very seldom did I have to even wipe the discs from prints. I would grade the dvd surface as 9/10
Blockbuster (All U can rent...did it 3 months) 2 unplayable due to scratches..that would come to like 40 unplayable dvds over 5 years if I compare them to Netflix!... EVERY SINGLE TIME I rented a dvd from them it was like they were handled by some slimball with that sweaty palm disease...who doesnt fucking care his snail trails are being left behind....*you know the type..every time you shake their hand its all fucking slimy, cold and clammy *shudder..... these dvds looked like they were licked, spit on, used as coasters, etc... EVERY SINGLE ONE.. EVERY SINGLE TIME..NOTE: Of course I dont mean on new release Tuesday. Couple that with the fact they dont get new stock as well as concerts and documentaries in, I canceled them. dvd surfaces... 3/10
HWV: One month movie pass (which sucks) In one month I had 1 severely scratched dvd that I KNEW wouldnt play.. I checked it in the parking lot, and brought it back in for an exchange...THAT was the ONLY COPY! *ARGH!!!!!!!!! Guess what....2 days later they put that same fucking movie back on the shelf! dvd surfaces 7/10
Now I know there are those here who use these stores and treat their rentals with respect..I am not using a broad brush here, but without a doubt I believe that the MAJORITY not all, but the majority of people who use Netflix are a better class of human beings who give a fuck about things that arent theirs than the majority of those who rent at these video stores
If someone disgrees..please dont just disagree,,,give me a reason at least as reasoned as I tried to give with my examples.
I've worked in Blockbuster for two years now, and this is the single biggest thing that pisses me off.
There is no hardship in simply removing a disk for the case, and placing it on the DVD tray. But, they come back to us in terrible states - marked, smudged with fingerprints, huge scratches.
The amount of 'faulties' in our store alone is HUGE every single week. I'm amazed the store still has stock left.
Course, we (the 'simpletons' behind the counter) always get the blame with rants from customers like "You should fucking check the disks before you rent them out". This is impossible. Rant to the last fucking customer who rented the piece of shit film!
If I ever see a disk that looks too bad for rental, I will throw it in the faulty drawer, but different DVD players respond differently to a variety of scratches and marks, so it's difficult to judge sometimes.
It is true, if it's not theirs, they don't give a shit. Most people probably play frisbee with the DVDs.

check this out, i work at a fucking video store, and "regular" people (thats what i like to call them) hate this just as much as you, i have a few asshole regulars (both usages here) who bring up like 3 copies of wtvr movies they want to rent and check them for fingerprints, and they bitch to ME about them being dirty, i grab them out of there hands, SPIT on em' wipe em off and show how clean they are, i tell "see its not that hard, dont you think you could've done that at home", IT PISSES ME OFF THAT PEOPLE BLAME ME FOR THIS, LIKE I HAVE TIME TO CLEAN EVERY FUCKING MOVIE THAT COMES BACK, and secondly i recognize those people when they bring there shit back, and more than a few times there SHIT IS DIRTY AGAIN WHEN THEY BRING IT BACK, ok take a few breathes, also this is why i dont like my gf family borrow my shit anymore, they always want to borrow my stuff but whenever i go over there they have dvds just sitting on top of the tv, on the counter, on the endtables, on top of other dvds, i ask em' where the cases for them are, i always get the same answer "i dont know, and i really dont care" and they want to borrow my shit
