I'm on a ROLL so here ANOTHER one that WON'T go down well! I'm TIRED of geeks DUMPING on romantic comedies! Getting BASHED AND TRASHED for being too predictable and all that but action and comic book movies which I just finished slagging are MUCH MUCH worse! ROMANTIC MOVIES HAVE GOOD POINTS
GOOD dialogue
FUNNY situations
GOOD human emotions
HELL THATS GOOD STUFF. MAKE MORE AND LESS ACTION CRAP
all right now let the slagging of me begin dudes......

I think Arnold Scwarzenegger should do a romantic comedy with Julia Roberts, then I'd see this one! For sure!

Give me ONE romantic comedy that doesn't show you the entire film in the trailer.....then I may consider your argument valid....

I agree with Kleopatra :)
There are heaps of great romantic comedies out there! Movies like:
Bridget Jones' Diary
High Fidelity
Meet the Parents
When Harry Met Sally
...Just to name a few :)
And, like any genre, RomCom has its good and bad...as does action.
So...play nice children.

I hate most romantic comedies, except for meet the parents and high fidelity, and probably a few more as well but you know.....
movies like my best friends wedding, runaway bride, shit like that.

But they are all predictable. Each and every single romcom ends the same, boy and girl have a problem/fight then they forgive eachother and hook up again.

I'm not completely against romantic comedies, some are ok to watch to kill some time but they are very predictable.

Romance no, comedy yes.
If a film has romance in it, then that should lead to graphic sex scenes. That way everyone is happy.
I actually had a fight with my aunt about this. She watches "Benny and Joon" and "Only You" over and over, yet she won't give anything else a chance, even quality fare like "The Matrix". So anyways, I told her that "The Matrix" could be happening to us right now, but "Only You" never will because any guy that acts the way guys do in RomComs is gay, or in denial.
THIS IS NOT A GAY BASH
So I reckon that RomComs can only be believable if they are about gay men and lesbians.
Once more,
THIS IS NOT A GAY BASH

Some romantic comedies are good. But most are crap. This is because most romantic comedies have the same basic plot, the same ending, and the same actors. Any romantic comedy will star either Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, Jennifer Lopez, Meg Ryan, or any combination of the four.

There seems to be a problem with generalisation here :(
ROMANTIC MOVIES HAVE GOOD POINTS
Put a "some" in front of that and I'd agree. In general I wouldn't call myself a fan of romcoms; but you will never find me making a ridiculous generalisation along the lines of "all action movies are shite" or suchlike  I can appreciate a quality romcom (Clueless, But I'm a Cheerleader - good stuff); as can I object to a crap one - this place is all about opinions afterall.
What does irritate me is people who lump a whole genre together: you will never convince me that all romcoms are good and all action flicks are crap or vice versa - it just doesn't work like that.
Grr arrgh; sorry for the rant, but do you have any idea how difficult it is to make someone see a horror film without them going: "but it's a horror" and grimacing? :D
My main point: let's try to take it one movie at a time and not limit ourselves to certain genres. Areet? :)

Not all romcoms suck.
Many do, tho. just like any other genre.

Ok...Lyrik hit it on the nail...but I must give my two cents.
So you don't like comic book and action movies? Good, great, that is fan-fucking-tastic. You say stop making those movies and make more rom coms? Fuck, that's a little overboard isn't it? If you don't like something, don't watch it, jesus, you have the power! It's like when a Christian movement in Canada tried to get Sopranos off the air, why? You aren't going to watch it, don't try to ruin it for those who do! I like those types of movies and shows, I also like some Rom Coms, but I don't want hollywood to make an excess in either! It's all about balance. As long as a movie is good, it's good, it doesn't matter what genre.
Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most of them stink...:P

For the most part, I am not a fan of Romantic Comedies. I am, however, a fan of movies that realistically portray relationships and have humorous elements to them. Such as:
When Harry Met Sally
Chasing Amy
Kissing Jessica Stein
Bridget Jones' Diary
Show Me Love
Jerry Maguire
Unfortunately most of the romantic comedies I have seen lately, have been nothing short of horrid (sweet home alabama, two weeks notice, wedding planner, etc.)
I am therefore not going to rent any more Hollywood romantic comedies, unless they appear to have a different sort of spin than the average generic one.

Well, most of the studio-made romantic comedies in the last few years have been predictable, unfunny, and unrealistic human emotions. A movie where a guy makes a bet to win a girl's/guy's heart, then tells them about it later, and the girl/guy being heartbroken, isn't really realistic. A lot would probaly just laugh it off, and happily ever after. But since we know the basic formula of a romcom, it seems to be pointless to see them, unless you're a guy and want to get into a girl's pants and think that's the ticket

Aren't action movies predictable, for instance? A 'cool' guy has a mission, he does this mission, while doing everything 'according to the plan' he meets a hot chick, and a happy end, he's killed everyone, he's crashed every single car, he's showed every single muscle and he stays with the chick (in rare cases, there's no chick).
Romantic comedies can be really good to watch (all the Julia Roberts ones NOT counted), as usually they're a nice way to relax.

Some people actually find action movies to be fun. I'd rather watch over-the-top violence than two twenty/thirtysomethings bickering over trivial relationship problems. I get enough of that from everyday life.
All of this boils down to personal preference. You'll never convince me that romantic comedies are just marvelous, and I'll never convince you otherwise.

And it brings me back to what I said, balance! There has to be something for everyone, if you don't like a specific genre, instead of complaning about it like a child, just don't watch it, simple as that.
Oh and well said choco

Romantic comedies, as of late, have not only been suffering from extreme Ephronitis, but take Ephron's movies and take the quality down significantly. What we've been left with are predictable, usually unoriginal, rehashings of stories we've heard a million times.
1. Boy meets girl
2. Friends at first, or fail at romance and become friends
3. Romance becomes evident, they fall in love, usually have a magical night together, which is all ruined when they...
4. Fall out after the big secret is revealed
5. Eventual forigveness, happy ending with kissing and the like.
This is the stuff that people dislike in romantic comedies, but when a good one is made, it usually has a good reception:
Some unmentioned ones.
Annie Hall
Say Anything...
Singles
About a Boy (to a certain extent)
Some Like it Hot
The Princess Bride
Breakfast at Tiffany's.
I don't think it's right to just be avidly against any and all output from any particular genre, since I have yet to discover a movie genre that does not have at least one movie I enjoy. If people could find the right RomCom's, they'd realize that some are pretty damn good.

I do a lot of bashing on Romantic Comedies, but let me at least stick up for the genre before my rant...
Give me ONE romantic comedy that doesn't show you the entire film in the trailer.....then I may consider your argument valid....
Go check out "It Happened One Night" which is highly regarded as the greatest romantic film of all time... Not predictable, and was the first film to ever win "ALL OF THE BIG ONES" at the Oscars.
Now for my rant...
To me, most romantic comedies are predictable, un-funny, and dull to watch. -Insert J-Lo Romantic Comedy movie here- has become the norm for society in it's quest for "popcorn flicks". Do I dig the mega-mega -insert Arnold action movie here- ? Hell no. Those too, have become just the same thing as Romantic comedies, only the dialogue and plot are different.
(Except for The Running Man. That movie fucking rocked.)
There is just no denying that most* movies of this genre have it's own predictable set of rules, as Annie Hall stated. There are some others...
1.) There's usually a side-character with an anxiety, or phobia that they overcome by the end.
2.) It's hit or miss at first. PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER or CAN'T STAND EACH OTHER
3.) If ANY statue falls over, the penis must break. And thus, a KA-RAZZZZY SCENE ENVELOPS WHERE THEY TRY TO PUT THE PENIS BACK TOGETHER! ( <---- this is FUNNY stuff. ) (Also can be replaced with a PAINTING or something else with a PENIS!)
Though it's funny that most of the ancedotes used to defend Romantic Comedies are cult favorites...
Chasing Amy kinda hits all the stereotypical rules on the popcorn level, but the dialogue acting and general storyline is good enough to overlook it...
==============================
SPOILERS FOR DISCUSSED FILMS (KINDA)
==============================
Jerry Macguire? How not so? Is it cause he just... FLIPS OUT!!!!!!!?!?
Oh God Harry Met Sally... you win, take that movie, I'm not dissecting it.
Meet the Parents... It's a quasi-romantic comedy I suppose... but still, look at the "rules" and SUBSTITUTE THE PENIS FOR JINXY CAT!!!!
High Fidelity... Excellent movie. Excellent Romantic Comedy. First they're perfect for each other, next they can't stand each other... then he can't live without her it seems like... and the Phobia friend/co-worker who finally gets a chickadee?
Bridget Jones' Diary... Can't really talk about it that much, because I only wasted about forty-five minutes of my life on it, before I hit stop...
=================================
Even the good stuff follows "The Hero's Journey" it seems like... Romantic Comedies have, and perhaps always will be predictable. The job, though is for the director to throw us a good enough curve, to make the inevitable seem questionable.

I personally hate action movie bashing.
99% of the time, the people in romantic comedies just stand around. Or sit around. And blab.
Blah blah fuckin' blah.
Anybody can sit around and talk. Not many are willing to throw themselves off the side of a building without a harness. That's one reason why Jackie Chan owns everybody else. :D

I hate romantic comedies, coz they are rarely romantic and usually never funny. Only Harry Met Sally is wonderful and one of the best. Meet the Parents is not a romantic comedy.

Hey Kane we have the same avatar!
I agree with you that they're okay to kill time but you already know how the movie's gonna end before you even enter the theater! Do something different for a change! Like My Best Friend's Wedding. Girl loves boy, girl tries to make boy love her, girl finaly realizes that if she really loves boy,she should let him marry the other woman.

Thats a pretty predictable knock on romantic comedies. There are all the same, the acting is fake boo hoo fucking hooo. Name one original movie that came out this year that was a blockbuster and did not follow the same script as every other film. And for the record what about sweet home alabama or serendipity dont act like you knew the whole movie what was going to happen at the end.

Romanitic Comedies are no different than any other type of film. Every type of film has the same therory going on...
Horroh - people are dying, who is doing it?
Action - Hero vs Villian, love interest.
Comantic Comedy - They meet, they fall in love, they break up, they marry.
Sci-Fi - Earth will blow up in two days...stop the bad guys!!!
It goes on and on...and in like all genres, some movies are good, most of them are bad, and thats that...
Some of my personal Fave romantic Comedies...
The Story of Us
Pretty Woman
The Philadelphia Story
America's Sweethearts
The Family Man
Four Weddings and a Funeral
