I own an old cassette of this album that used to get a shitload of play way back in the dim and distant. Rather than go search for the tape I decided to download the album via Kazaa. It was time well spent. This is a tremendous album. Very atmospheric and in the case of This Corrosion and Dominion it even has a couple of big, silly rock anthems (that's big, silly rock anthems in a good way...not big, silly rock anthems in the Bon Jovi sense). I never really backtracked to check out their earlier releases. Is there anything as good as or better than Floodland? Was Floodland a major departure? Have they released anything since of particular note?

Check out the Vision Thing CD. It is just as good as Floodland. The song More is an eight minute masterpiece. I think it came out in 1990 after Floodland. I remember seeing a few videos from Vision Thing. A video for More and Doctor Jeep. Can you believe I own all the Sisters Of Mercy releases on record as well as CD. I play my records just to hear that fuzz.

Actually, FLOODLAND is the album Andrew Eldritch released under the "Sisters" moniker AFTER the original group had a falling out.
Wayne Hussey and the remaining members went on to form The Mission U.K.... a much better listen than Eldritch and Big Sister Patti Morrison (the "new" SOM), in my opinion.
I got FLOODLAND the day it was released, because Eldritch is that crucial. I love THIS CORROSION, MOTHER RUSSIA, DOMINION...but the rest of the ALBUM (yes, kiddies, 'twas in the late 80's) left me a tad underwhelmed.
Interesting sidenote to Ms.Morrisson ... she became Mrs. David Vanian a few years ago. And, shit ... it doesn't get any fuckin' cooler than Dave. His influence over the creative flow of The DAMNED (after Brian James left) helped create the whole goth/punk/horror genre. A very under rated figure is Mr. Vanian.
Anywhoo... I suggest that you look up the Sisters catalog, pre '86. Some bombastic, emblematic, scuzzy ass goth schlock. Exquisite.

I was fortunate enough to see the Sisters of Mercy live twice. They wouldn't play the U.S. for a long time. They were two of the best shows I have been to. The light show is incredible.
I agree with BloodiedCelticVengeance about Floodland. Minus This Corrosion, Mother Russia, and Dominion the album isn't that great. I like Vision Thing more. The title song is great. First, Last, and Always has some good tunes on it also.
Temple of Love is probably my favorite song from them.

I love Floodland - it brings back so many good memories of nights at Rock City in Nottingham (that's in England for you non-UK Schmoes :) ). Not a bad track on the album.
Psychocandy - you could do worse than check out an earlier Sisters album First and Last and Always - more good stuff from Mr Eldritch and crew.
I must say however, that I saw them live in London about 3 years ago and was very disappointed - Andrew came on stage with blonde hair and a FUBU top fer chrissakes!! I was expecting the godfather of goth to be head to toe in black! However, it was a moot point as there was so much dry ice that we could see the band for 90% of the show anyway! :)
