Order and extra-large pizza, then make it look like a CD that weighs 6 pounds.... VOILA! instant obsolete movie technology!

lol, someguy..

stefan was explaining laserdisc to you. Basically, it was a DVD that was both the size of a record (in his words, a large pizza) and was (in his description) as heavy as hell. I dont know about the technical specs, but after seeing the discs, I didnt care to know. =) If you are really interested in finding more information on it, run on any search engine (yahoo works pretty well for this sort of thing) and just type the word "laserdisc". The internet is a big ass place...

Laserdisc is just a very, very outdated DVD technology. They where something of a fad for a while, but the market dropped out when newer (and far more managable) DVDs became widely availabel.

I still have my old laserdisc player hooked up to my spare bedroom television and watch it whenever I feel nostalgic. It was great when it first came out and I still watch it because I have movies on laserdisc that still haven't made it onto DVD like "Glengarry Glen Ross", "CB4", "Hoffa: Special Edition", "Pulp Fiction: Special Edition", The Tv show Volumes 1-3 "Quantum Leap", "The Walking Dead", The original "The Seven Samurai" with extras by Criterion, and I even found "The Blair Witch Project" available for the low price of $3.99. While it is definitely something of a has-been system, and is a pain to flip over (DVD's have me spoiled), I still love to watch my first big purchase in the movie disc department, "Top Gun"... Also I've heard that "Star Wars" is available for it, and "Episode 1" even...

LaserDisc only flopped in North America. Apperently it became quite the 'thing' in Asia, and is still very popular. That's how all the bootleg starwars DVD's were created. Asian video pirates bought the LaserDisc's, copied all the data off to computers, then wrote it out onto DVD's. If anyone's ever looked into the Star Wars bootlegs, that's how they got the 5.1 channel Dolby Digital onto them (because the LaserDiscs were in 5.1). That's also why you can't turn the chinese subtitles off. They were on when the LaserDisc was copied to computer, and just became "part of the movie" in that respect. If it wasn't for the LaserDics, the bootleg DVDs wouldn't exist, and if it wasn't for the bootleg DVDs, I doubt Lucas would be releasing a REAL DVD on October 16th (which he IS doing).
