View Full Version : Movie With Best Twisted Ending

Hi folks. For some time now, movies with twisted ending have become a sort of minor fad in Hollywood. Quite a few directors have jumped on the "Usual Suspects" & "Sixth Sense " bandwagon - I think one reason is probably they think such endings would categorise them as intelligent directors/story-tellers. And of course, to hopefully make $$ like Sixth Sense did. Other films that follow suit are "The Others", "Dragonfly", "Primal Fear". M Night Shyamalan has been practically trying to better his "Sixth Sense" ending with "Unbreakable" & "Signs".
One can even go back as far as Hitchcock days to look for an ending that shakes & jolts you right outa ya seats!

Well, what do u guys & girls is think is the best movie with the most far - out, twisted, butt - grabbing ending? For me, despite all the ho-ha that Sixth Sense generated, I still think that Usual Suspect & Keyser Soze rocks the most! I wouldn't have seen that ending coming in a million years! That's not to say Sixth Sense was bad in any way. I just wish the former made as much $$ as the latter!

Right on!

The Others, I think that twist blew The Sixth Sense's right out of the water

I think I'll agree with that. If only it had come ahead of Sixth Sense...

Fight Club had a cool twist.

Identity had a great twist, which made me like it even more.

Se7en was great, one of the greatest twist endings I've ever seen.

Clearly Twist Ending movies:
The Usual Suspects (10/10)
The Others (8/10)
The Sixth Sense (I agree with the other schmoes, The Others is superior, and it'd have been even better if it came before 7-8/10)
Joy Ride (I liked this surprising a lot more than i thought i would, 7/10)
Unbreakable (7/10)
Identity (the first twist is the best, the second one i saw coming 8/10)

Could be classified as twist movies...
The Ring (semi-twist...very nice ending tho 8/10)
Fight Club (twist, but not at end 10/10)
Memento...(more like a series of "twists" though they're more revelations than anything 10/10)
Frailty (but i thought it copied some other twists a bit too much...then again, all twists are pretty similar 7/10)
A Beautiful Mind also has a very cool twist, if not at the end
of the movie...8/10
Vertigo (has a nice twist at the end...10/10)
Brazil (probably the movie from which Abre Los Ojos derived its twist...10/10)

Sort of twist movies...
Abre Los Ojos/Vanilla Sky (tho these movies the twist was really from out of nowhere, tho vanilla sky tried to stick in a couple more clues to improve on Open your eyes...7-8/10 for abre los ojos, 8/10 for vanilla sky)
Donnie Darko and Mulholland Dr...again, both of these are movies that sort of have a twist...they don't have a shocking shocking ending, more that they build to a logical conclusion (well donnie darko more so than mulholland...(DD-8/10, MD-10/10)
Se7en (sorta twist 10/10)

so you can see that i LOVE twist movies...there are other twist movies of course, but these are the better ones i feel...if anyone knows of any other good twist movies, please, pm me or say here...i love these types of movies, and am trying to find more (my favorite genre would the mindfuck genre most likely)...

thanks to hannibal21 and vicvega for that list! i'm definitely going to check some of those movies out...(Jacob's Ladder, Primal Fear, Session 9)

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned 'No Way Out'(1987).. That end just turned the whole movie upside down.. Brilliant.

Swimming With Sharks comes to mind. Not a "blow you away" twist but a decent little dagger....great flick.

It's the only "twist" movie that has never had one of my friends predict the ending correctly on their first time watching it...

25 of my favourite twisted endings: (In no Order)

John Frankenheimer's SECONDS/THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE
Alan Pakula's THE PARRALAX VIEW
John Carpenter's INTO THE MOUTH OF MADNESS
Alex Proyas' DARK CITY
Chris Nolan's MEMENTO
Alan Parker's ANGEL HEART
Sidney J Furie's THE IPCRESS FILE
Adrian Lyne's JACOB'S LADDER
Richard Kelly's DONNIE DARKO
Hitchcock's VERTIGO
Franklin J Schaffner's PLANET OF THE APES (original)
Frankin J Schaffner's THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL
Micheal Winner's THE MECHANIC
Richard Rushes' THE STUNTMAN
Don Siegel's MADIGAN
Bill Paxton's FRAILITY (*******SPOILER********not the obvious
one, the revelation******)
Bryan Singer's USUAL SUSPECTS
David Fincher's SEVEN/THE GAME
Terry Gilliam's TWELVE MONKEYS
Sidney Lumet's FAIL-SAFE/THE ANDERSON TAPES
JERRY AND TOM
THE CUBE
OPEN YOUR EYES

I tried not to include spoilers, or if its is a true twisted ending or just driving a mind bending message home as all these films are must see- and to divulge the ending would detract from the schmoes viewing pleasure.

The Sixth Sense, Se7en, and The Game, not to mention Fight Club...all had great endings.

In recent memory, my favorite movie so far this year, Identity...has had one of the better twist endings.

The Usual Suspects had the best twist I have ever seen in a film.

Uh...I saw the ending of The Others coming a mile away. It was still a good movie, though....

The four movie endings that hit me like a tonne of bricks were The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, Seven and Fight Club.

The Usual Suspects takes the cake and runs with it on this one.

Ok, so I knew the ending before I watched the film, but it was still great to see it all unravel.

I want to know why no one has mentioned Psycho. That had a great twist. Although I think the reason it hasn't been mentioned is that it is by far the most famous twist, and in a bad way. Everyone assumes that everyone else already knows it, so they think it's okay to just give it away anywhere. At the Alfred Hitchcock attraction at Universal Studios in Orlando, they give away the ending to the entire audience during the Psycho presentation. Not via a clip from the movie, they just come out and say it. Hitchcock would be furious.

I agree with most of everyone's choices, except for Identity because:
*******POSSIBLE SPOILER*******

It reminded me of Donald Kaufman's script, "The 3" in Adaptation. So it seemed silly and cliched to me. There was even a cop, a girl, and a killer, making it even more similar to Kaufman's script.

The three best are

The Usual Suspects
Fight Club
Frailty

I would like it to be known that I guessed the ending of Identity.
