Not since the early seventies with the
Coppola/Scorcese/Spielberg/Depalma/Lucas clique
has there been in my mind, the talent there is today working behind the camera. I unequivocally go to the movies in this day and age to see my favorite aueters dilligently work to put up some really impressive work. So who are your favorite directors working today? Here's my list:
1. The Coens -- Like the police, every lil thing they do is magic
2. Wes Anderson -- A unique voice in a world full of copycats
3. Quentin -- Bring me Kill Bill NOW!!!!
4. PTA -- has the whole dysfunctional family thingy down
5. David Fincher -- a magician with the camera
6. Soderbergh -- gritty, bleached out look does it for me
7. Night -- Too much Hitchcock is always a good thing
8. Burton -- I'll forgive Apes if Big Fish is what it's supposed to be
9. Lee -- Spike & Ang -- the magnificent Lee Brothers
10. Spielberg -- I might catch some flak for his ranking here, but since E.T - I haven't really enjoyed anything that he has done in the last 20 years. Schindler was too hard for me to watch, but not in the Hook kind of way, and everything that he's done seems like hit or miss (Amistad miss -- AI -- big miss -- Report -- Hit -- Catch Me -- Hit). Don't get me wrong, the Spielberg of my Youth - Jaws, Encounters, Raiders, E.T, is the best director I have ever seen, just a case of what have you done for me lately.

Solid list but id have to add Darren Aronofsky.I think he has the most potential out of all the current generations directors. The man is responsible for two contemporary classics (Requiem For A Dream/Pi) and i cant wait for his adaptation of the Lone Wolf story (Shogun fuckin Assasin!)
So were disregarding the 70's crew ie Scorsese/Coppola?
Id also add Ridley Scott as although this man does make the odd very average movie (Gladiator/Hannibal.......)i still cant forget the genuis that gave us both Blade Runner and Alien.
Darren Aronofsky
The Coen Brothers
Quentin Tarantino
David Fincher
Steven Soderbergh
Oliver Stone
Ridley Scott
Ang Lee
PTA
Spike Lee

10. Wes Craven- He still has the ability to make a scarfest, I just wish he would return to his roots.
9. Oliver Stone- I've always loved Stone's knack for realism.
8. Brian DePalma- I love the way he uses a camera as if it were a paintbrush and he is painting a picture.
7. David Fincher- He makes "cool" movies and unforgetable movies.
6. John Woo- Nobody can make an action movie like Woo. Nobody.
5. Steven Soderbergh- He has a terrific visual style.
4. Joel Coen- Knows how to weave an intricate storyline into a great visual film.
3. Martin Scorcese- He still hasn't lost his touch, but I just wish he was make more character-driven films.
2. Quentin Tarantino- Unforgetable characters, terrific writing, fast pacing- I just wish he would make more films.

Spielberg - I don't care what anybody says - this guy still knows how to make a kickass movie.
Peter Jackson - Lord of the Rings - enough said
David Fincher - Fight Club, Se7en, Panic Room: this guy knows how to make some good suspenseful movies
Christopher Nolan - Memento is probably the most inventive, creative movie I know; Insomnia was an excellent followup and now he's working on Batman.
Quentin Tarantino - Pulp Fiction: one of the best movies ever made. Can't wait for Kill Bill.
Ridley Scott - He's making some very good movies - ranging from action, drama, suspense. All good, all kickass.
Ron Howard - Just won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind after films like Backdraft & Apollo 13. This guy knows his movies.
Sam Raimi - Spiderman is the reason that more comic book movies are popping up. Can't go wrong with $110+ million in its first weekend. Those Evil Dead movies are pretty cool too.
Bryan Singer - X-Men and now X2 are both box office and critical hits. And Usual Suspects is one . . . kickass . . . movie!!
Brett Ratner - Had hits with the Rush Hour flicks and made Red Dragon a pretty decent movie. Too bad he couldn't get Superman.

I add How the Grinch Stole Christmas to what you'v mentioned as it was, IMO, a superb family comedy. Its script may have been corny at times but it looked gorgeous n refreshing.
