I don't consider The Silence of the Lambs (10/10) a sequel to Manhunter (5/10), but if it were, it would be the ultimate example of a superior sequel.

T2: Judgment Day (9/10) - superior to The Terminator (8/10)
Bride of Frankenstein (8.5/10) - superior to Frankensten (7.5/10)
X2 (8/10) - superior to X-Men (8/10)
Spy Kids 2 (6.5/10) - superior to Spy Kids (6/10)
Blade II (5/10) - superior to Blade (2/10)

That's all I can think of (unless you count Bond movies as sequels to each other). Aliens and Alien are too close for me to declare one better than the other.

Sequel is the wrong word for bond followups - more like another "episode".

These are all still true, but I've got two more to add.

Shark Attack (2/10), sucks, but it is superior to Shark Attack 2 (1/10).

Friday the 13th Part 2 (6/10), Part 3 (5/10) and Jason X (4/10) are all superior to the original Friday the 13th (4/10). You heard me. Actually, it's probably better than Jason X, but Jason X has some cheesy-fun to it, so...
